Without understanding the programming difficulties faced by developers with visual impairments, the research community cannot begin to work on effective solutions to overcome these potential problems. This paper will describe our initial empirically based study to identify the problems blind software developers face. We analyzed 69 survey responses with blind developers in an effort to identify the aspects that are indeed a challenge to software development. The results indicate a number of difficulties, workarounds, and basis requirements that will serve as domain and stakeholder understand.

Objective 1. To evaluate and optimize commonly used nonlinear deformation algorithms when applied to human brain MRI. 2. To evaluate and optimize accuracy of automated atlas-based segmentation of the two most commonly used target regions for deep brain stimulation (DBS), the nucleus subthalamicus (STN) and the internal part of the globus pallidus (GPi). 3. To guide clinicians as to which preoperative MRI sequences to acquire in patients undergoing DBS. Background Translating single-subject imaging into a common reference frame such as the MNI space is a ‘core concept within the field of brain mapping’ (Evans et al., 2012) making an accurate transformation into this space necessary. Here, we evaluated and optimized 6 commonly used deformation algorithms and compared each outcome to manually labeled brain regions of 103 brains. Methods Algorithms evaluated were: New Segment, DARTEL and SHOOT (SPM); FNIRT (FSL); SyN and BSpline (ANTs). Target space was the MNI 2009b NLIN space. An atlas of the STN and GPi in MNI space (Ewert et al., 2017) was transformed to native space by inverting each deformation matrix. The resulting atlas-based segmentations were then compared to expert manual segmentations of the native brains. Overlap between the two was quantified using the Dice coefficient (Dice et al., 1945), mean surface distance and correlation of volumes. Two open source datasets were used: The IXI-dataset ( http://***/ixi-dataset/ ) and the HCP-dataset ( http://***/ ). Results The best performing algorithms were New Segment with a custom tissue probability map (TPM) (1) and ANTs SyN (2) with an additional step to refine subcortical coregistration. Performance is compared to inter-rater results (3) of manual segmentations. This paper proposes a new multi-agent system to solve very short-term solar forecasting problems. The system organizes the training data into clusters using Part and Select Algorithm. These clusters are used to generate different forecasting models, where each one is performed by a different agent. Finally, another agent is responsible for deciding which model will be applied at each forecasting situation. Results present improvements in forecasting accuracy and training performance if compared to other forecasting methods. A discussion of how to use this architecture for the implementation of a more comprehensive model is also addressed.

Detailed material modeling covering low continuum scales and scale-transition methods offers material and design engineers a virtual tool for the virtual material assessment and optimization, relaxing on the experimental testing efforts. This contribution demonstrates the different steps of a Virtual Material Characterization (VMC) process applied for the prediction of elastic properties of a real meso-scale composite geometry. The presented R&D results have been achieved as part of a running R&D program (M3 MacroModelMat), in which the meso-modeling framework will be extended with a key and unique aspect: non-linear and damage composite behavior to be used for attributes such as static strength, dynamic strength and NVH. © 2016, European Conference on Composite Materials, ECCM. With the rising popularity of robotics in our modern world there is an increase in the number of engineering programs that do not have the resources to purchase expensive dedicated robots but find a need to offer a basic course in robotics. This common introductory robotics course generally covers the fundamental theory of robotics including robot kinematics, dynamics, differential movements, trajectory planning and basic computer vision algorithms commonly used in the field of robotics. The nature of this material almost necessitates the use of robotic hardware to allow the students to practice implementing the theory they learn in class. This paper introduces a software based educational tool designed to be used in introductory robotics courses. The software simulates the geometry of motion (kinematics) of any multilink industrial robotic arm and is to be used in place of or along with an actual robotic arm. The students can use this tool to support their learning much the same way they use an actual robotic arm. The tool includes an integrated development environment that models the environments that typically included with robotics packages. This tool allows the student to input the characteristics of the arm they wish to program allowing the student to program any type of arm they wish. This tool provides a low cost solution to situations where purchasing expensive robotic arms typically needed for this course is not possible, where the existing equipment does not allow for direct joint programming, for on-line robotics courses and for non-software intensive programs where the students are not to produce robotic software. © American Society for engineering Education, 2015.

This paper presents two novel approaches for people counting in crowded and open environments that combine the information gathered by multiple views. Multiple camera are used to expand the field of view as well as to mitigate the problem of occlusion that commonly affects the performance of counting methods using single cameras. The first approach is regarded as a direct approach and it attempts to segment and count each individual in the crowd. For such an aim, two head detectors trained with head images are employed: One based on support vector machines and another based on Adaboost perceptron. The second approach, regarded as an indirect approach employs learning algorithms and statistical analysis on the whole crowd to achieve counting. For such an aim, corner points are extracted from groups of people in a foreground image and computed by a learning algorithm which estimates the number of people in the scene. Both approaches count the number of people on the scene and not only on a given image or video frame of the scene. The experimental results obtained on the benchmark PETS2009 video dataset show that proposed indirect method surpasses other methods with improvements of up to 46.7% and provides accurate counting results for the crowded scenes. On the other hand, the direct method shows high error rates due to the fact that the latter has much more complex problems to solve, such as segmentation of heads. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. The growing number of web pages on the internet introduces a need to combine and integrate information from HTML tables of different web pages that contain similar information into a single web page, especially information from the same domain of interest. This paper presents an approach of HTML table integration by combining several existing methods that are proved to solve different issues in the integration processes. The integration of HTML table consists of three phases: (1) extraction of the structure of the tables;(2) integration of the tables' schema;(3) integration of the data values. To solve the conflicts in semantics and naming in the tables schema, domain-ontology is used. To improve quality of integration of data values in the tables, the vector space model is used to check the duplications of data values. As the integration result, a single HTML table is obtained. The approach is implemented on an engine built using Phyton. Results of the experiment shows that the engine can successfully integrate two HTML tables into single table. © 2015 IEEE.

One of the critical problems facing software industry today is the lack of appreciation of the full benefits that can be derived from software Verification and Validation (V&V) and an associated problem of shortage of adequately trained V&V practitioners. To address this situation, software V&V course curriculum is being improved at author's institution via a NSF-funded project. The basic objectives of this project are to improve software education to make it well aligned with academic research as well as industry best practices. In addition, it is aimed that the course material could also be used to enhance on-the-job professional training in SW industry settings, thereby helping to increase the pool of professionals with contemporary V&V knowledge and skills. The new course curriculum enhancement described in this paper is guided by academic research and industry best practices that focus on four specific V&V focus areas: requirements engineering, reviews, configuration management, and testing. Among many educational tools that are being developed to achieve project objectives, the work related to the development of case studies is described here. Historically, case studies have been as educational tools in business, law and medicine but not so much in software engineering. The hypothesis is that case studies would be effective educational tools to introduce real-world professional practices into the classroom which would help the students in identifying and solving problems, and develop a perspective on knowledge application. In this paper we describe a set of V&V related casestudies that we have drawn from industry experiences and developed them as pedagogical tools. These case-studies cover several important topics in S/W V&V domain such as software testing, legal issues in software, software consumer protection, and requirements from the customers' perspectives.
