The recent advances in Grid and Cloud computing make new types of applications possible. At the same time, they require an infrastructure to implement heterogeneous computing resources time and cost-savely. Here, approaches that utilize design patterns, i.e., proven solutions to existing problems, seem to provide a good approach to enable these kind of applications. In this paper, we investigated which design patterns are already used in the area of Grid computing nowadays. After a brief description of the literature study design, we present our findings which include the discovered design patterns, corresponding categories, and application areas.

In this paper, a lateral controller for autonomous vehicles is proposed under conditions of localization uncertainty, utilizing Robust Model Predictive Control (RMPC). Recently, localization accuracy has been largely improved through the integration of digital maps and sensor data from cameras and LiDARs. However, significant challenges remain in environments like highways, where landmarks are sparse and featureless, compromising the effectiveness of sensor data for map matching. This often leads to inaccurate vehicle positioning and, consequently, a loss of control capability. In this study, boundaries of positioning uncertainties are estimated first, and the region of uncertainty is modeled. The controller is designed to account for this uncertainty, where the constraints are adjusted to reduce chattering and biases. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed controller effectively maintains path-tracking performance even in the presence of localization uncertainty. Additionally, this study shows that the performance can be maintained under significant localization error, indicating that it can contribute to relaxing the localization requirements.

Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) have been substantially improved in recent past. However, network attacks have become more sophisticated and increasingly complex: many of current attacks are coordinated and originated in multiple networks. To detect these attacks, IDSs need to obtain information on network events from multiple networks or administrative domains. This work demonstrates that a Distributed IDS (DIDS) can be composed of existing IDSs, improving the detection of misuses in a multiple network environment. We use a grid middleware for creating a service-based intrusion detection grid. We demonstrate through experimental results that the proposed DIDS allows the integration of heterogeneous existing IDSs and improves the detection of attacks by exploring the synergy between existing IDSs.

Additive manufacturing is an innovative production approach aimed at creating products that traditional techniques cannot produce with the desired quality and requirements. Throughout the additive manufacturing process, data is either used (such as materials properties, printer characteristics and settings) or generated (such as monitoring data during printing, slicing strategies setting parameters). However, managing such data with complex relationships remains a significant challenge in both research and industry in the additive manufacturing field. To address this issue, we developed a modular ontology that can be used as the basis for a framework that supports decision-making systems, facilitate semanticsaware data management, and enhance the understanding and optimization of additive manufacturing processes. In this paper we focus on one of the state-of-the-art additive manufacturing approaches, i.e., powder bed fusion. To show the use and the feasibility of our approach, we created a knowledge graph for an actual additive manufacturing experiment based on our ontology, and show how queries relevant to domain experts can be answered using this knowledge graph. © 2024 CEUR-WS. The NOAA Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) fire thrusters to remain within a 1° longitude-latitude box and to dump accumulated angular momentum. In the past, maneuvers have disrupted GOES imaging due to attitude transients and the loss of orbit knowledge. If the R-series of spacecraft to be launched starting in 2012 were to follow current practice, maneuvers would still fail to meet Image Navigation and Registration (INR) specifications during and after thruster firings. Although maneuvers and recovery take only one percent of spacecraft lifetime, they can be long in duration and sometimes come at inopportune times, such as hurricane season, when coverage is critical. To alleviate this problem, this paper explores thruster firings small enough not to affect imaging. Eliminating maneuver outages and post-maneuver recovery periods increases availability and facilitates autonomous operation. Frequent maneuvers also reduce longitude/latitude variation and allow satellite colocation. Improved orbit observations come from a high-altitude GPS receiver, and improved attitude control comes from thruster torque compensation. This paper reviews the effects of thruster firings on position knowledge and pointing control and suggests that low-thrust burns plus GPS and feedforward control offer a less disruptive approach to GOES-R stationkeeping and momentum management.

Solving algorithmic problems and implementing them in code is a major theme in introductory computer science courses. Problems related to string manipulation are common and of great importance in various domains. In the context of computer science education, solving algorithmic problems of this type may be very challenging for novices, even for the more competent students. Analysis of novice students' solutions to a specific class of problems dealing with string manipulation revealed that a widespread intuitive and non-linear approach was used to solve these problems, which led to cumbersome and erroneous solutions. On the other hand, a straightforward linear approach that leads to shorter and more elegant solutions is uncommon. Uncovering students' common and unsatisfactory approaches in problem solving have significant implications on instruction.

Lightweight coresets are compact representations of data sets such that clustering methods present competitive results in relation to the complete data set. They are constructed by sampling important points from the complete set. We propose a fast method to approximate the sampling of lightweight coresets from very large data sets which are distributed among multiple machines. We show that the proposed method is much faster and scalable, reaching results 48 times faster than the original lightweight coresets, while holding similar properties.

Among different physiological sources of noise in blood oxygenation level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD-fMRI), low-frequency fluctuation in arterial carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) constitutes the strongest modulator of the BOLD signal. In this paper, the performance of respiration variation (RV) and respiratory volume per time (RVT) in identifying abnormal but prominent respiratory patterns are studied. We used Human Connectome Project in the Developmental dataset, as children are a challenging cohort in fMRI studies and have irregular breathing. According to our findings, there is no guarantee that a given respiratory event evident in the abdominal respiratory belt transducer timeseries, such as a deep breath or pause in breathing, will be detectable in both RVT and RV. In addition, RVT and RV do not show similar behavior during some respiratory events, especially when the subject breathes deeply at a low rate, while they use almost similar respiratory response functions.

As the number of published scientific articles increases, the analysis of trends and state-of-the-art in software engineering is becoming very time-consuming and laborious task. To address the ever-growing demands for systematic literatures review techniques, rapid review and scoping reviews techniques have emerged. We used an NLP powered tool, which employs the PRISMA surveying methodology, to automate most of the review processes. We used it to automatically review relevant articles indexed in IEEE Xplore, PubMed and Springer digital libraries on the topic “software Development for Enhanced Living Environments and Ambient Assisted Living”. The relevant articles identified by the NLP toolkit contained up to 21 properties clustered into 3 logical groups. We discovered that software Development for Enhanced and Assisted living environments attracted an increased attention from the scientific communities over the last 10 years and showed several trends in the specific research topics that fall into this scope. The research uncovered that iterative software methodology had been the most attractive research topic in the field. Despite the enormous empirical evidence on application and success stories of agile development methodologies in many software development engineering, it received a little attention from the scientific community in the software development for Enhanced and Assisted Living Environments. The NLP toolkit identified the most relevant articles that contained the defined properties in the search. Hence, it significantly reduced the manual work, while also generating informative tables, charts and graphs.

This paper gives a brief overview of the international workshop on semantic technologies in system maintenance.
