Effectively teaching human-centered design can pose challenges within the undergraduate curriculum as it requires access to users and stakeholders. Service-learning, a growing pedagogy within engineering, offers many synergistic opportunities to create a human-centered design experience. In service-learning, students are paired with a real user in a real community and asked to address a real need. This paper presents the implementation of a human-centered design approach using service-learning at Purdue University. The approach is multidisciplinary with participation from students within and outside of engineering. The design process and curricular structure is discussed along with example projects that illustrate the approach from the perspectives including mechanical, electrical and software design. Successes and challenges are also discussed. © American Society for engineering Education, 2010.

It was with great excitement that we planned the combined meetings of Northeast Aquaculture Conference and Exposition (NACE) and the International Conference on Shellfish Restoration (ICSR) with the 33rd Milford Aquaculture Seminar (MAS). Bringing these different but complementary audiences together resulted in a meeting that combined many different aspects of fisheries restoration and aquaculture under one *** hundred attendees including government representatives, research scientists, industry, and academia at both the university and vocational high school levels attended this event. The meeting commenced on Wednesday December 12th 2012, with over eighty people attending seven field trips to area aquaculture farms and research facilities. The formal program began on Thursday, December 13th with a plenary session including invited speakers Eric Schwabb, Acting Assistant Secretary for Conservation and Management at NOAA; Sebastian Belle, Executive Director of the Maine Aquaculture Association and Boze Hancock from the Nature Conservancy, who discussed the role of aquaculture in fisheries restoration. John Bullard, the Northeast Regional Administrator of NOAA Fisheries Service, addressed the group during the luncheon the following day. The technical papers and workshops presented were divided into 35 sessions over three days of the meeting and included topics such as the history of aquaculture, aquaculture hatchery innovations, siting and planning issues, risk management, aquaculture business management, ocean acidification, climate change, as well as aquaculture disease issues and potential remedies. Having persons present who have experienced problems and successes, along with those in manufacturing and government responsible for addressing concerns and sharing best practices, was invaluable. Discussions among this cross-section of persons who represent different aspects of aquaculture were as important as the well-presented and interesting formal papers

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of web-based MS Power Point education on primary school students. Educational course material has been developed for web based learning environment. It has web based content of MS Power Point 2003 program. Also, quality of educational material is evaluated by taking into the account the ISO9241Usability of software standards. For this purpose, Xerox Usability Survey is conducted to the 83 primary school students. Statistical analysis shows that achievement of the students increased via the web based content.

software process assessment (SPA) is an effective tool to understand an organization's process quality and to explore improvement opportunities. The knowledge represented as good-practices to develop assessment methods is, unfortunately, scattered in the literature concerned with developing either lightweight or heavyweight SPA methods. This paper organizes the set of recognized best practices that assessment methods' designers can use to design and implement their assessment methods. Such practices are presented in the literature as assessment requirements, success factors, observations, and lessons learned. A set of 38 practices has been collected and classified into five main classes, namely practices related to SPA methods, support tools, procedure, documentation, and users. The collected set of practices will help improving knowledge and skills in designing and conducting assessments. Although the collected set of best practices is important to design both lightweight and heavyweight methods, they are of utmost importance to design lightweight assessment methods, because these methods are developed based on individual experience and less rigor design approaches than heavyweight methods.

The Last Planner System4 (LPS) and Location-Based Management System (LBMS) both aim to achieve the lean goals of decreasing waste, increasing productivity and decreasing variability. LBMS is mostly known as a scheduling system, but includes control mechanisms. LPS is primarily a control system, but includes a scheduling component;namely, phase scheduling. How best link these two systems together to achieve better project performance? Further, can the LBMS control mechanisms be integrated with LPS? Can phase pull scheduling be integrated with LBMS? The goal of this research is to develop a process and best practices to combine the benefits of LPS and LBMS. Skanska Finland has used the two systems together. They observed that the systems support each other well. Because the planning and controlling methods in different industries can vary, a series of workshops was conducted at a hospital project on the US West Coast, and three other US companies were interviewed, to discover the factors specific to industries where activity-based scheduling systems dominate. By combining these three sources of information to the latest case study results on the stand-alone use of LBMS and LPS, the paper proposes processes to integrate LPS and LBMS in pre-bid master scheduling, pull phase scheduling, look-ahead scheduling, and weekly planning. The proposed processes need to be tested in practice. The hypotheses for future research are that after implementing the proposed process, 1) schedule conformance will improve, 2) project durations will shrink, 3) productivity will increase, and 4) cascading delay chains will show a decrease.

Having the right information at the right time is crucial to make decisions during emergency responses. To fulfill this requirement, emergency management systems must provide emergency managers with knowledge management and visualization tools. The goal is twofold: on one hand, to organize knowledge coming from different sources, mainly the emergency response plans (the formal knowledge) and the information extracted from the emergency development (the contextual knowledge);on the other hand, to enable effective access to information. Formal and contextual knowledge sets are mostly disjoint;however, there are cases in which a formal knowledge piece may be updated with some contextual information, constituting what we call the composite knowledge. In this paper, we extend a knowledge framework with the notion of composite knowledge, and use spatial hypertext to visualize this type of knowledge. We illustrate our proposal with a case study on accessing to information during an emergency response in an underground transportation system.

There exists a need for additional transmission capacity to connect distributed resources such as wind energy from remote locations to the power grid. The high cost of running transmission lines necessitates having a way to minimize the length of transmission required to connect the distributed resources to load centers. In addition, the substations that connect to the transmission lines need to be fault tolerant by ensuring that the loss of any one transmission line does not result in the loss of power to any substation. In this paper, the relative cost of connecting a range of sources to a range of loads with and without fault tolerance is presented. Fault tolerance is achieved through a 2-path redundant graph approach. Studies show that the additional cost of ensuring fault tolerance for selected schemes ranges between 8% and 33%. This percentage value can support decision making in practice.

Solving algorithmic problems and implementing them in code is a major theme in introductory computer science courses. Problems related to string manipulation are common and of great importance in various domains. In the context of computer science education, solving algorithmic problems of this type may be very challenging for novices, even for the more competent students. Analysis of novice students' solutions to a specific class of problems dealing with string manipulation revealed that a widespread intuitive and non-linear approach was used to solve these problems, which led to cumbersome and erroneous solutions. On the other hand, a straightforward linear approach that leads to shorter and more elegant solutions is uncommon. Uncovering students' common and unsatisfactory approaches in problem solving have significant implications on instruction.

The usage of rubrics has been greatly shown to aid in consistent grading, faster grading, and improved student understanding of grades. Traditionally, the rubric is used to calculate a grade for the assignment, and then that final grade is recorded in the course grade book. This article presents a practical method for retaining within a grade book not only the final grade for an assignment, but also the individual sub-scores used to calculate that final grade. Grades are stored in Microsoft Excel, with each major assignment being stored on an individual workbook tab. Rows represent individual students, and the columns indicate the sub-scores for each line item on a grading rubric. Rubric scores are multiplied by a weighting factor to obtain an overall score for the assignment. From this data store, grade sheets, including grading comments, can automatically be generated for the students through a mail merge operation. These grade sheets can then either be printed in hard copy or e-mailed to the students as pdf attachments. Individual student performance can be tracked and graphed over time on multiple dimensions, allowing for easier observation of students who may be struggling with key concepts in the course, and the data can be used for overall assessment of course outcomes. © American Society for engineering Education, 2009.
