Fostering mathematical literacy amongst primary school students using realistic mathematics education approach

The present study aims at comparing different ways of conducting lesson on two-digits multiplication for primary school students using algorithm and Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach. Qualitative experiment with user observation method had deliberately chosen as the design of the study as the intention is to figure out the impact of treatment while the subjects stay in natural setting of their habitat. There are three third grade classes consist of 61 primary school students in Singaraja, Bali – Indonesia who participated in this study. The participants were experienced different learning method, which are: (1) conventional class with multiplication algorithm followed by area model, (2) RME followed by multiplication algorithm and (3) RME. The data were gathered from students’ written work on the literacy test. Afterwards, a descriptive quantitative method was performed to analyze the data. The result showed that the third group in which RME approach was employed gained the best average scores to solve the literacy problems. Meanwhile, the second group in which the RME lesson was followed by multiplication algorithm gained the best average scores in solving routine problems. The study implies that RME approach contributes to the better mathematical literacy skills for young students.

This study introduces a novel approach to regional nerve block anesthesia in scapular fractures by integrating ultrasound guidance with deep learning techniques. The proposed method leverages advanced imaging modalities and state-of-the-art deep learning models to achieve precise nerve localization amidst complex fracture patterns. Through extensive experimentation and evaluation, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in enhancing surgical planning, intraoperative decision-making, and patient safety. This study represents a significant advancement in the field of orthopedic surgery, offering a promising solution for improving outcomes and quality of life for patients with scapular fractures. The method this study suggests for locating nerves in shoulder fractures advances orthopaedic surgery. We can improve, expedite, and streamline procedures with the use of AI and medical imaging. This will improve the quality of life and outcomes for scapular fractures.

The movement toward transformation and joint capabilities has created new challenges for program acquisition efforts. The research reported in this article examines the implications of joint capabilities on acquisition. In short, the research investigates how program interdependency, size, age, and developmental status influence the occurrence of programmatic breaches. The findings provide empirical evidence that metrics that are capable of measuring interdependency may prove fruitful as an early indicator of joint program acquisition shortfalls.

Prevalence, rate, and predictors of virologic failure among adult HIV-Infected clients on second-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Tanzania (2018–2020): a retrospective cohort study

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has been proven to be highly effective in reducing the impact of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. However, as more people receive initial ART treatment, the risk of developing resistance and eventual treatment failure increases, leading to the need for second-line treatment regimens. Understanding the factors that contribute to virologic failure to second-line ART is crucial in preventing switching to the more expensive and toxic third-line regimens. This study provides information on the prevalence, rate, and predictors of virologic failure (VF) among clients on second-line ART in Tanzania. We followed 4718 clients for 15100 person-years (PY) of observations. Of them, 1402 (29.72%) experienced virologic failure at a rate of 92.85 per 1000 PY of observations (95% CI 88.11, 97.84). Factors that were associated with VF included: having a viral load count of ≥ 1000 copies/mL during first-line ART, with a hazard ratio (HR) 4.65 (95% CI 3.57, 6.07), using lopinavir (LPV/r) as a protease inhibitor during second-line ART (HR 4.20 (95% CI 3.12, 7.10), having a CD4 count < 200 cells/mm3 during second-line ART (HR 1.89 (95% CI 1.46, 2.44), and being on ART for 13–35 months (HR 8.22 (95% CI 2.21, 30.61). Paradoxically, having a CD4 count < 200 cells/mm3 during first-line ART treatment was associated with a reduced risk of virologic failure (HR 0.77 (95% CI 0.60, 0.99). In Tanzania, approximately 30% of adult clients on second-line ART experience VF at a rate of 92.71 per 1000 person-years. This high virologic failure rate underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions, such as enhancing adherence support, optimizing drug regimens, and regular viral load monitoring. These interventions will reduce the need for switching to the more costly and toxic third-line ART therapy and are also crucial for achieving the UNAIDS goal of 95% viral suppression among treated individuals by 2030.

Across the United States, industry, education and government stakeholders are redefining their partnerships in order to address and reduce critical skill gaps in the current workforce. This represents a paradigm shift in technical and professional education, as well as the collaborative processes utilized in creating and maintaining complex multi-stakeholder talent development systems. In doing so, however, this paradigm shift also presents a huge challenge: education and public sectors are typically not familiar with matured product development and (project) management principles and often do not apply proven industry practices to the definition, design, delivery and improvement of their educational products. The evaluation, acceptance and ultimate implementation of those principles departs from the traditional (United States) culture of education, as it applies new instructional design processes, change implementation processes, and feedback/assessment models. Therefore, critical review of such methods, innovative development of transfer options and human factors management in successfully achieving the required systems change were identified, and include explanation, understanding, acceptance, personal development, and trust. Using a case study approach, this paper will analyze several highly visible and innovative adaptations of industry and educational standards which were accepted and released by all relevant stakeholders. By leveraging subject matter experts from both the industry and academic settings, Michigan Advanced Technician Training (MAT 2 ) formed organizational and working teams comprised of the primary government, industry, and academic stakeholder groups and established a workable context for a knowledge transfer of best practice industry standards. Modeling for small cell networks in 5G communication environment

The small cell structure in which many cells are arranged per unit area by reducing the size of cells is a candidate technology for an increase in transmission capacity in the 5G environment. However, the decrease in the size of the cell led to additional problems such as increased inter cell interference and frequent cell changes owing to the movement of the terminal. Therefore, the aim of this study was to propose small cell dynamic channel allocation (SDCA) and hybrid and dynamic channel allocation (HDCA) using conventional reuse methods to improve the macro cell performance while efficiently utilizing scarce frequency resources. The proposed method facilitates an improved performance that is lacking for macro-cell users in the center area of the cell boundary for the network where conventional macro cells and small cells are superposed. Furthermore, to improve the performance, it can provide resources that are lacking in the small cells of the center. To evaluate the performance, the proposed method was compared to frequency reuse factor1 (FRF1), frequency reuse factor3 (FRF3), and fractional frequency reuse (FFR) methods in terms of the signal-to-interference/noise-ratio (SINR) of users of each macro cell and small cell, outage, capacity for each user, and total system capacity. As a result of comparing the SINR, it was confirmed that the performance of the macro cell users has improved by an average of 43.88% compared to FRF1, FRF3, and FFR, and the performance of small cell users has improved by an average of 4.31%. Comparison results show that the outage proportions of the macro and small cell users are 61.29% and 70.59% lower on average, respectively. A comparison of results show that the capacities of the macro and small cell users have also improved by 22.5% and 14.5% on average, respectively. A key component to enhancing reproducibility in the molecular simulation community is reducing ambiguity in the parameterization of molecular models. Ambiguity in molecular models often stems from the dissemination of molecular force fields in a format that is not directly usable or is ambiguously documented via a non-machine readable mechanism. Specifically, the lack of a general tool for performing automated atom-typing under the rules of a particular force field facilitates errors in model parameterization that may go unnoticed if other researchers are unable reproduce this process. Here, we present Foyer, a Python tool that enables users to define force field atom-typing rules in a format that is both machine- and human-readable thus eliminating ambiguity in atom-typing and additionally providing a framework for force field dissemination. Foyer defines force fields in an XML format, where SMARTS strings are used to define the chemical context of a particular atom type. Herein we describe the underlying methodology of the Foyer package, highlighting its advantages over typical atom-typing approaches and demonstrate is application in several use-cases. The risen complexity of automotive systems requires new development strategies and methods to master the upcoming challenges. Traditional methods need thus to be changed by an increased level of automation, and a faster continuous improvement cycle. In this context, current vehicle performance tests represent a very time-consuming and expensive task due to the need to perform the tests in real driving conditions. As a consequence, agile/iterative processes like DevOps are largely hindered by the necessity of triggering frequent tests. This paper reports on a practical experience of developing an AI-augmented solution - based on Machine Learning and Model-based engineering - to support continuous vehicle development and testing. In particular, historical data collected in real driving conditions is leveraged to synthesize a high-fidelity driving simulator and hence enable performance tests in virtual environments. The Level 1 Muon Trigger subsystem for BTeV will be implemented using the same architectural building blocks as the BTeV Level 1 Pixel Trigger: pipelined field programmable gate arrays feeding a farm of dedicated processing elements. The muon trigger algorithm identifies candidate tracks, and is sensitive to the muon charge (sign);candidate dimuon events are identified by complementary charge track-pairs. To insure that the trigger is operating effectively, the trigger development team is actively collaborating in an independent multi-university research program for reliable, self-aware, fault adaptive behavior in real-time embedded systems (RTES). Key elements of the architecture, algorithm, performance, and engineered reliability are presented.

The holder of seven patents he has contributed 16 chapters to eight research books published more than 100 papers in technical journals and made numerous presentations in technical conferences. In 1983 he received the College of Engineering Outstanding Teaching Award and the College Patent Award for creative innovative and practical invention. In 1984 he was selected by the Utah Section of the IEEE as the Engineer of the Year. In 1984 he received the Outstanding Paper Award from the International Microwave Power Institute and in 1985 he received the Curtis W. McGraw ASEE National Research Award for outstanding early achievements by a university faculty member. In 1991 he received the ASEE George Westinghouse National Award for innovation in Engineering Education. He also received the 1992 Richard R. Stoddard Award from the IEEE EMC Society. In 1986 Dr. Iskander established the Engineering Clinic Program in the College of Engineering at the University of Utah. With the availability of a large number of software packages for electromagnetic (EM) education through the national Computer Applications in Electromagnetic Education (CAEME) Center [1] and other individual efforts, there have been some concerns regarding the ability to integrate this software effectively in routine classroom teaching. Basically, congested EM curricula do not provide instructors with sufficient time to include software demonstrations and simulations during class periods. It is also not clear whether students will be able, adequately and independently, to understand basic underlying concepts and physical phenomena from visualization of colorful graphics and from the output of performed simulations. To help integrate available EM software in classroom teaching for both instructor use and student independent study, CAEME developed three interactive video lessons for student instruction. Interactive media lessons integrate and allow individuals to interactively manipulate information from multimedia such as video, software, and animated graphics, and also include instructional information such as quizzes and tutorials. In this article, we present the features of three interactive video lessons in EM developed by CAEME. These lessons include tutorials, simulations from CAEME software and videos, and quizzes to evaluate student understanding. The lessons use animated graphics illustrating specific dynamic phenomena and specific measurement procedures. They also keep a record of student quiz scores for instructor use. These, as well as other features of the three developed interactive video lessons, and the software and hardware requirements for developing such lessons, will be described.
