An insertion is a specific type of the structural variations. The identification of insertions in a human genome is essential for the study of diseases or their functional effects. There are many tools available for identifying the insertion type with different methods and strategies. However, most of them could not deliver both good recall and precision, especially for the real datasets sequenced with the paired-end short reads. In this paper, we propose iPRIns, a new computational method for detecting insertions aiming to improve both precision and recall. The proposed method with discovering and filtering processes outperformed all other three tools for 5 out of 10 real datasets, the variations of NA12878, for both precision and recall. iPRIns is released under the open-source GPLv3 license. As the Web continues to evolve, the sophistication of the programs that are employed in interacting with it will also increase in sophistication. Web agents, programs acting autonomously on some task, are already present in the form of spiders. Agents offer substantial benefits and hazards, and because of this, their development must involve not only attention to technical details, but also the ethical concerns relating to their resulting impact. These ethical concerns will differ for agents employed in the creation of a service and agents acting on behalf of a specific individual. An ethic is proposed that addresses both of these perspectives. The proposal is predicated on the assumption that agents are a reality on the Web, and that there are no reasonable means of preventing their proliferation.

engineering students, like other students, have different learning styles. Many techniques have been developed in the classroom setting to address these differences, and these approaches have been well documented. One of the more interesting approaches is the inverted classroom, in which students view short videos prior to lecture. However, when it comes to providing feedback to students on submitted assignments, the main method employed is the written comment. This method continues to be used because it is simple to do, can be performed offline, and is domain agnostic. However, written feedback is often highly ineffective. This paper presents an alternative method for providing feedback to students that represents a natural extension to the inverted classroom: video feedback. In lieu of written feedback, students are provided feedback for computer programming exercises through the use of a short video made via video capture and incorporating oral commentary by the instructor as the assignment is graded. The article describes the technique used, student perceptions of the technique, a comparison of faculty effort, and assessment from two private 4-year institutions in the Midwest. © American Society for engineering Education, 2013.

As part of the requirement for ABET accreditation, an engineering program is expected to have a curriculum culminating in a major design experience, commonly referred to as either a "senior design" or a "capstone" project, based on the knowledge and skills acquired in earlier course work. One challenge that programs face is providing appropriate technical and professional feedback to students on their capstone projects. For example, students may be working in an application domain in which the faculty member has limited knowledge, or may be using newer technologies that the faculty member has not used before. To overcome these problems, it is often advantageous for the team to partner with an industrial mentor. The industrial mentor can provide technical assistance to the project as well as provide impartial and unbiased feedback on the status of the project. However, this is not always feasible, as not all campuses are located in urban areas, and project stakeholders may not be local to the institution. This work in progress article describes the first part of a two part project to overcome some of these problems. In this portion of the project, capstone teams work directly with an alumnus who serves as "External Industrial Reviewer" on the project using remote video conferencing. As the students complete significant milestones, deliverables are critiqued by External Industrial Reviewer who is impartial to the project. Students receive feedback on the deliverable, which can then be incorporated into future projects. This article describes the concept as well as provides a preliminary assessment of the technique. © American Society for engineering Education, 2013.

Amorphous multi-element materials offer unprecedented tunability in composition and properties, yet their rational design remains challenging due to the lack of predictive structure-property relationships and the vast configurational space. Traditional modeling struggles to capture the intricate short-range order that dictates their stability and functionality. We here introduce ApolloX, a pioneering predictive framework for amorphous multi-element materials, establishing a new paradigm by integrating physics-informed generative modeling with particle swarm optimization, using chemical short-range order as an explicit constraint. By systematically navigating the disordered energy landscape, ApolloX enables the targeted design of thermodynamically stable amorphous configurations. It accurately predicts atomic-scale arrangements, including composition-driven metal clustering and amorphization trends, which are well-validated by experiments, while also guiding synthesis by leveraging sluggish diffusion to control elemental distribution and disorder. The resulting structural evolution, governed by composition, directly impacts catalytic performance, leading to improved activity and stability with increasing amorphization. This predictive-experimental synergy transforms the discovery of amorphous materials, unlocking new frontiers in catalysis, energy storage, and functional disordered systems. A computer-supported collaborative learning environment can enable the students of web-based distance education courses to interact with each other and with one or more facilitators to conduct group work. The problem- based learning (PBL) is a learning theory that emphasizes collaboration and teamwork to solve a problem. However, a problem that occurs frequently in the implementation of PBL is the out-of-context conversation, which is a situation in which the students lose focus and start talking about topics that are not related to the discussion. In presential learning, the teacher can easily detect this problem and try to avoid it in order to improve the learning process. In distance learning, however, detecting this problem is not a trivial task. That is mostly due to issues related to the students' geographic distribution and the lack of information regarding their motivation. Another noteworthy aspect is the creation of workgroups. In PBL, the members of a workgroup that is responsible for solving a problem must have certain complementary knowledge and skills related to the problem, and it might be difficult for the facilitator to assign students to workgroups, since the lack of presential contact makes it difficult to perceive important characteristics of the students' profiles. Then, this paper presents an agent-based architecture for detecting out-of-context conversation and for helping in the creation of workgroups on the PBL. © 2011 ACM.

For Business Architecture (BA) to provide the intended benefits there should be considerable focus on the components that deliver the real architectural value. Current trends focus on the business process component of Business Architecture and tend to consider BPM as an architectural style for its modeling. As the major concern of enterprises is value creation to customers in terms of services, considering business processes as a hub mixes the concerns of service specifications and how it is provided. For Business Architecture to serve the generation of subsequent artifacts in the Enterprise Architecture (EA), we suggest that business services should be the focal point and appropriate architectural style should be adopted. This paper presents methodologies we developed adopting the SOA architectural style to model business services, and created Service Oriented Business Service Model (SOBSM) and applied it on the portfolio of business services standardized across a given enterprise ecosystem. As well, we suggest that the resulting SOBSM be used for generating the subsequent components of the EA spectrum. Copyright © 2012 ACM.

This paper presents the design and construction of a low-cost combat robot named Artemis, developed for participation in the Robocore Experience 2024 competition. The project emphasizes the integration of cost-effective components and innovative methodologies to create a competitive robot. The ESP32 microcontroller was selected for its advantages in energy efficiency and connectivity, surpassing traditional platforms like Arduino. The construction process involved several phases, including planning, development, testing, correction, and performance evaluation, utilizing tools such as CAD software for design and 3D printing for fabrication. Key components included a DC motor, L298N H-bridge, and a LiPo battery, all chosen to optimize performance while adhering to budget constraints. The robot’s design evolved through iterative testing and adjustments, ultimately leading to a successful competition debut. This work highlights the importance of resourcefulness and collaboration in robotics, showcasing how educational institutions can foster innovation in engineering projects. ©2024 IEEE.

With the rising popularity of robotics in our modern world there is an increase in the number of engineering programs that do not have the resources to purchase expensive dedicated robots but find a need to offer a basic course in robotics. This common introductory robotics course generally covers the fundamental theory of robotics including robot kinematics, dynamics, differential movements, trajectory planning and basic computer vision algorithms commonly used in the field of robotics. The nature of this material almost necessitates the use of robotic hardware to allow the students to practice implementing the theory they learn in class. This paper introduces a software based educational tool designed to be used in introductory robotics courses. The software simulates the geometry of motion (kinematics) of any multilink industrial robotic arm and is to be used in place of or along with an actual robotic arm. The students can use this tool to support their learning much the same way they use an actual robotic arm. The tool includes an integrated development environment that models the environments that typically included with robotics packages. This tool allows the student to input the characteristics of the arm they wish to program allowing the student to program any type of arm they wish. This tool provides a low cost solution to situations where purchasing expensive robotic arms typically needed for this course is not possible, where the existing equipment does not allow for direct joint programming, for on-line robotics courses and for non-software intensive programs where the students are not to produce robotic software. © American Society for engineering Education, 2015.

In order to enable business agility, different architectural styles for organizing information systems, business and technology have emerged. Architecture involves top-level management, the business entities in the organization down to the grass-root level views. While the values of both Service Oriented Architecture and Enterprise Architecture are emerging in industry, the IT based organizations have no clear guidance on how to use these two sets of architectural approaches together. In the same token, enterprises and architecture practitioners strongly need a reference model and guideline to legitimate, rationalize, and justify courses of action taken in their business systems architecture and design. This research work proposes a new approach referred to as Service Oriented Enterprise Architecture (SOEA) framework to address this enterprise need. SOEA framework attempts to resolve the limitations that arise when Enterprise Architecture (EA) and SOA approaches are used independently. This framework, therefore, links an SOA style with the EA process to realize and help organizations benefit from SOA effort as a key part of their Enterprise Architecture. Copyright © 2012 ACM.
