The growing adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) terminology in recent years in several domains, including healthcare, has yielded multiple benefits. One of the roles is to support professionals in delivering outstanding and suitable healthcare for patients, while also empowering patients to independently track their health state. However, this wide growth is accompanied by many significant security concerns and cyber risks, including unauthorized access, data leakage, information modification, and data erasure. This article outlines the advantages of employing groundbreaking blockchain technology to provide robust and verified authentication methods for different systems. Additionally, it imparts a foundational comprehension of the technologies employed in the procedure of constructing and advancing blockchain-based platforms. In addition, we explore tools like Scythe and Avispa that are employed to assess the system’s resilience against different types of attacks.

A conventional bi-directional inductive power transfer (Bd-IPT) system is required to accommodate a wide range of loads due to variations in the magnetic coupling factor and battery voltage of electric vehicles (EVs). To address this challenge, the system adjusts both internal and relative phase shifts of the H-Bridge converter to achieve the desired power transfer. However, altering the internal phase shift may lead to a loss of zero-voltage switching (ZVS) in the converters, while changing the relative phase shift can introduce reactive power into the system, resulting in increased losses in the coil and the converter. This article presents a novel Bd-IPT system that utilizes an integrated boost multilevel converter (IBMC) with a digitised modulation scheme. The primary objectives of the proposed Bd-IPT system are to maintain the desired power transfer, operate both the primary and secondary converters within the ZVS range, and achieve zero reactive power for a wide range of loading conditions. Additionally, the article compares the efficiency and cost of the proposed Bd-IPT system to a conventional IPT system.

In recent years, with the rise of e-commerce and digital services, customers’ expectations have affected supply chain management operations. The logistics industry reacts proactively by integrating new technologies into its systems to meet changing customer expectations. Among these technologies, a relatively new concept called Supply Chain of Things (SCoT) is an enabling technology for supply chain operations to increase productivity and automation. However, a large number of customer orders and increasing concerns about operating costs challenge efficient management and quality of service in SCoT. In this regard, this paper addresses the order-picking problem of minimizing delivery time and operating costs, including travel costs and total costs to the employer. Metaverse can be considered a feasible solution to address this problem due to its advantages of seamless and intelligent interaction between the physical world and the digital world. In this paper, we present a metaverse-based system architecture and design the network digital twin to enable intelligent real-time management of the SCoT environment. We formulate the order-picking problem and propose a genetic algorithm-based solution to satisfy customer demands on time with minimal operating costs by creating a digital twin of the supply chain system in the Metaverse. The simulation results show that the proposed solution achieves significant gains compared with baseline strategies in terms of the total cost to the employer while keeping order delivery time under the acceptable customer level.

The significance of logs has been widely acknowledged with the adoption of various log analysis techniques that assist in software engineering tasks. Many log analysis techniques require structured logs as input while raw logs are typically unstructured. Automated log parsing is proposed to convert unstructured raw logs into structured log templates. Some log parsers achieve promising accuracy, yet they rely on significant efforts from the users to tune the parameters to achieve optimal results. In this paper, we first conduct an empirical study to understand the influence of the configurable parameters of six state-of-the-art log parsers on their parsing results on three aspects: 1) varying the parameters while using the same dataset, 2) keeping the same parameters while using different datasets, and 3) using different samples from the same dataset. Our results show that all these parsers are sensitive to the parameters, posing challenges to their adoption in practice. To mitigate such challenges, we propose PILAR (Parameter Insensitive Log Parser), an entropy-based log parsing approach. We compare PILAR with the existing log parsers on the same three aspects and find that PILAR is the most parameter-insensitive one. In addition, PILAR achieves the second highest parsing accuracy and efficiency among all the state-of-the-art log parsers. This paper paves the road for easing the adoption of log analysis in software engineer practices.

Since the early 2000s, Model-driven engineering has aimed to accomplish executable UML models. With fUML and PSCS, the Object Management Group (OMG) published standardized specifications of precise semantics for certain parts of UML in the form of metamodels, which form an execution environment. A certain characteristic of these environments is that static information about a model is analyzed and evaluated during runtime. With composite structures being a concept for describing structural properties of a model, the majority of execution semantics specified by PSCS concern analysis and processing of such static information about the model’s fine-grained structure. Thus, the PSCS specification appears suitable for a generative realization approach. Using Model-To-Text-Transformation to generate source code, which serves as an input for the actual execution environment, the runtime level of model executions can be relieved by outsourcing analysis and processing of static information to the level of code generation. By inserting this preprocessing step, the performance of the actual model execution at runtime can be improved. This paper introduces an implementation of the PSCS specification for C++ based on code generation using Model-to-Text-Transformation. This also includes a generative approach to realize an extension mechanism of the fUML and PSCS execution environments by introducing user-defined semantic execution strategies. The proposed PSCS implementation was developed as a part of the MDE4CPP project. Moreover, this paper presents a set of test models validating the correct functionality of the implementation as well as a performance benchmark. Finally, analysis results of an application example for the presented realization are evaluated and discussed. © 2023, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Cybersecurity challenges are inherently complex, characterized by both advanced technical elements and complex aspects of human cognition. Although extensive research has explored how victims' human factors affect their susceptibility to cyberattacks, the influence of cybercriminals' personalities on the pattern of cyberattack campaigns and the resulting damage to organizations has not received equivalent attention. To bridge this research gap through computer simulation, we introduce a cyberattack campaign designer that enables modelers to construct cyberattack campaigns. This tool allows modelers to define how the process or pattern of the cyberattack campaign can change based on the cybercriminal's personality and simulates how these personality differences influence the magnitude of cyberattack damage on the target organization. In this paper, through computer simulation, we demonstrate how cautious and reckless personalities result in variations in the cyberattack pattern and, consequently, affect the magnitude of cyberattack damage, despite identical cyberattack objectives and techniques used at each step.

A sugarcane yield of one plantation area depends on several independent variables. Practically it is challenging to predict accurately by using conventional methods. This study aims to develop a decision model based on a combination of fuzzy logic and object-oriented methods to predict sugarcane yield. The research is conducted in four main stages, employing object-oriented methods for model design and fuzzy logic for model construction. Object and activity diagrams are used for the object-oriented model design. The fuzzy membership functions employed are a combination of trapezoidal and triangular shapes. The resulting decision model can simulate 2,225 data from plantation areas in Indonesia. Based on the 10 examples of plantation area data in Indonesia, plantation number one obtained the largest sugarcane yield, which was 4.79%, with a similarity value of 0.90 (when compared to manual calculations as its ground truth). This similarity value is a higher value when compared to the average similarity value, which is 0.89.

Online recommendation systems have gained prominence. The online recommendation systems provide a better and faster way to choose Tour Spots for traveling and transactions. Recommender systems are powerful emerging technologies that help consumers to find the best places for touring according to their interests. The recommendation system recommends the most appropriate destinations for the end users. Internet travel portals also compete with each other regularly by taking into consideration several characteristics. Recommendation systems are one of the best methods to raise income and attract consumers. Established systems retrieved irrelevant information that resulted in low customer satisfaction and disappointment of customers. In this research, the Tour Spot recommendation system through content-based filtering is proposed and designed. It recommends the best picnic spot according to the budget and interest of the user. The proposed system improves the tourist experience and recommends the best place according to the things they would like; most significantly it is budget friendly as it suggests different places according to the interests and needs of the user. Data collection, including user information, consolidated user engagement reports, and tour spot data, is the primary challenge of implementing a travel recommendation system. User information originates mainly from information entered by the user during the registration process. When the system has the data of user likes and dislikes, then the system compares the user preferences to the dataset that the author makes for the tour recommendation systems in the dataset first identifies all the features that must be considered at the time of selection of travel destination. This Article also considers user likes and dislikes and the previous history of users to recommend a similar tour spot.

The Human Behind the Data: Reflections from an Ongoing Co-Design and Deployment of a Data-Navigation Interface for Front-Line Emergency Housing Shelter Staff

On any night in Canada, at least 35,000 individuals experience homelessness. These individuals use emergency shelters to transition out of homelessness and into permanent housing. We designed and deployed a technology to support front-line staff at the largest emergency housing shelter in Calgary, Canada. Over a period of five months in 2022, we worked closely with front-line staff to co-design an interface for supporting a holistic understanding of client context and facilitating decision-making. The tool is currently in-use and our collaboration is ongoing. In this paper, we reflect on preliminary findings regarding the second iteration of the tool. We find that supporting shelter staff in understanding the human behind the data was a critical component of design. This work contributes to literature on how data tools may be integrated into homeless shelters in a way that aligns with shelters' values. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Binary Code Similarity Detection

Binary code similarity detection is to detect the similarity of code at binary (assembly) level without source code. Existing works have their limitations when dealing with mutated binary code generated by different compiling options. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to addressing this problem. By inspecting the binary code, we found that generally, within a function, some instructions aim to calculate (prepare) values for other instructions. The latter instructions are defined by us as key instructions. Currently, we define four categories of key instructions: calling subfunctions, comparing instruction, returning instruction, and memory-store instruction. Thus if we symbolically execute similar binary codes, symbolic values at these key instructions are expected to be similar. As such, we implement a prototype tool, which has three steps. First, it symbolically executes binary code;Second, it extracts symbolic values at defined key instructions into a graph;Last, it compares the symbolic graph similarity.
