This article explores the development and implementation of futuristic bins with automated waste sortation systems to address improper and mixed waste disposal challenges. Despite the existence of categorized waste bins, individuals often dispose of waste improperly, hindering the sorting and decomposition processes. Integrating advanced technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), futuristic bins offer innovative solutions. Futuristic bins with automated sorting systems facilitate accurate waste sorting, reduce mixing, and optimize waste disposal. These bins increase efficiency, reduce costs, and optimize collection routes while promoting environmental cleanliness and awareness of waste management. The article describes the research methodology, including preliminary study, specification requirements analysis, prototype development, and testing. The results demonstrate the implemented system's accuracy and real-time object detection capabilities. The study also acknowledges limitations and suggests future research directions, including improving communication between object detection algorithms and microcontrollers. Overall, the development of futuristic bins with automated waste sortation systems represents a significant advancement in waste management, with the potential to revolutionize waste management systems and create sustainable cities and communities.

Real-Time Simultaneous Localization and Mapping with LiDAR Intensity

We propose a novel real-time LiDAR intensity image-based simultaneous localization and mapping method, which addresses the geometry degeneracy problem in unstructured environments. Traditional LiDAR-based front-end odometry mostly relies on geometric features such as points, lines and planes. A lack of these features in the environment can lead to the failure of the entire odometry system. To avoid this problem, we extract feature points from the LiDAR-generated point cloud that match features identified in LiDAR intensity images. We then use the extracted feature points to perform scan registration and estimate the robot ego-movement. For the back-end, we jointly optimize the distance between the corresponding feature points, and the point to plane distance for planes identified in the map. In addition, we use the features extracted from intensity images to detect loop closure candidates from previous scans and perform pose graph optimization. Our experiments show that our method can run in real time with high accuracy and works well with illumination changes, low-texture, and unstructured environments. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. To address the issue of sensitivity to external interference and noise in traditional moving object recognition and tracking algorithms, this paper proposes a novel algorithm that combines Image Fusion-based Frame Difference (IFD) with Differential Translation Transformation (DTT). Firstly, image enhancement and noise reduction are applied to adjust contrast and brightness in the images of moving objects. Subsequently, the IFD algorithm is employed to adjust the blending of new frame with the background, smoothly fusing them. Pixel differences between the fusion frame and the background are calculated to identify moving objects in the image. Matching is performed between the target areas obtained by the IFD algorithm based on pixel displacement differences between consecutive frames and the target displacements obtained by the DTT algorithm. This allows for recognition and tracking of the targets. To validate the effectiveness of the algorithm, experiments are conducted on two sets of moving-object image data, resulting in accuracies of 90.12% and 90.87%.

This research work has been done towards the treatment of Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancer by experimenting as to how a computer aided design can help oncologists classify and segment GI Cancer using Gastroenterology (GE) Images. The concept of Attention Module by the name of Convolution Block Attention Module (CBAM) using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) layers has been utilized to achieve saliency mapping in these images. The different layers of the CNN are tweaked and the hyper parameters are consistently checked and changed to achieve maximum accuracy. The CBAM Algorithm is divided into Channel Attention (CA) and Spatial Attention (SA) module. The Channel Attention has been implemented in the HSV Color Space for finding the best color space for segmentation purposes of the Chromo endoscopy medical images. Classification, followed by segmentation, is again implemented using CNN based model for normal and abnormal cancer images. For classification, 92% test accuracy has been achieved, while 70% Dice Similarity Coefficient has been obtained for segmentation. The results achieved are competitive as compared to the previous reported results on the GE images dataset.

Emotion recognition can help human-computer interactions by enabling systems to respond empathetically and adapt to users' emotional conditions. This capability improves user experience, supporting the development of a more intuitive and emotionally responsive communication system. This study analyzes a bimodal approach based on gender (male and female) to recognize emotions without contextual information in dialogue analysis. Utilizing the Multimodal EmoryNLP dataset extracted from the TV series Friends with acted speech, we focused on four primary emotions: Angry, Neutral, Joy, and Scared. The model used in this study for text classification is RoBERTa, and wav2vec 2.0 is used for audio feature extraction with the Bi-LSTM model for classification. The experiment results using weighted F1-score reveal that data augmentation enhanced the performance of analyzing the original dataset from 0.46% to 0.52% and the male dataset from 0.43% to 0.51 %. In comparison, the female dataset remained consistent at 0.46%. The weighted F1-score and Unweighted Averaged Recall (UAR) from the male dataset are higher, 51 % and 48%, respectively, than those from the female dataset, 46% and 47%, respectively. Gender-based analysis indicated that male and female datasets exhibited distinct performance patterns, highlighting variations in emotional expression and recognition between genders. These findings underscore the effectiveness of multimodal strategies in emotion recognition and suggest that gender-specific factors play a significant role in enhancing classification performance. While these results highlight performance trends, further validation through repeated trials and statistical analyses could provide stronger generalizations and insights into gender-based differences.

Given the vast amount of unstructured financial text data available today, there is a high demand for reliable, quality annotations to facilitate robust model development. However, traditional methods can often be expensive and time-inefficient. In this study, we investigate annotations for emotion, sentiment, and cognitive dissonance generated by the large language models (LLMs), GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, for quarterly earnings conference calls and compare them against human annotations obtained via traditional methods. We also investigate different prompt engineering choices on LLM annotation quality, experimenting with 4 styles of prompts centered around varying the amount of contextual information given and how it is presented to the models. Our results show the GPT models are not only more consistent and reliable than human annotators, but also provide annotations in a more cost- and time-efficient manner. © 2023 IEEE.

Given the huge toll caused by natural disasters, it is critically important to develop an effective disaster management and emergency response technique. In this article, we investigate relationships between typhoon-related variables and emergency response from natural language (NL) reports. A major challenge is to exploit typhoon state information for typhoon contingency plan generation, especially from unstructured text data based on NL input. To tackle this issue, we propose a novel framework for learning typhoon Bayesian network structures (FLTB), which can extract typhoon state information from unstructured NL, mine inter-information causal relationships and then generate Bayesian networks. We first extract information about typhoon states through NL processing (NLP) techniques, and then analyze typhoon reports by designing heuristic rules to identify causal relationships between states. We leverage these features to improve the learned structures and provide user-interaction mechanisms to finalize Bayesian networks. We evaluate the performance of our framework on real-world typhoon datasets and develop the Bayesian networks based typhoon emergency response systems. © 2022, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

In this paper, we propose a new generic sampling classification method based on granular Ball sampling because of good robust noise immunity and possessing properties that can be classified as an undersampling method, called Granular Ball Center-based Common Under-sampling. The method uses adaptively generated Ball to cover the data space, and the sampled data are supported by the centroid properties of the Ball. Unlike the boundary sampling of granular ball sampling, this method mainly uses the center points to smooth out the noise, which not only can clearly represent the attributes, but also can reduce some computational effort, and in most of the time, it can obtain almost the same accuracy as the original model, or even can perform better. Compared with undersampling, it can be better adapted to the task of unbalanced classification as well as non-unbalanced classification. The above can show that the method is able to be generalized without the restriction of specific classifiers and also has a strong adaptability to the dataset. The method can also be effectively used as an undersampling method for unbalanced classification because it is supported by the centroid property, and the method has a speedup effect for most classifiers. These advantages form a strong advantage of the method in improving classifier performance. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper presents an extensive empirical study aiming to identify the optimal combination of feature extraction techniques and machine learning algorithms, including deep learning, for automated mispronunciation detection during Quran recitation. Three feature extraction methods-Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC), Spectrogram, and Kaldi pitch - are systematically evaluated in conjunction with a diverse set of classifiers, including Gradient Boosting (GB), Support Vector Machines (SVM), Logistic Regression (LR), Random Forest (RF), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks. The study leverages the QDAT dataset, comprising 1500 audio samples from 150 readers, with metadata specifying age, gender, and three distinct rules for mispronunciation detection. Experimental results demonstrate that the integration of MFCC with deep learning classifiers consistently achieves the highest performance across multiple evaluation metrics. Model robustness is validated using receiver operator characteristic curves (ROC) and accuracy metrics.

Serverless Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) environments enable developers to build and run cloud applications without the need to manage the underlying servers and computing infrastructure, allowing them to focus on implementing the application logic. Such environments contain numerous functions and dynamic resources, e.g., APIs and databases, making it challenging to gain insight and context of internal events i.e., recognize modules. Module in a serverless application is a set of functions and resources, that represents a functional unit that shares logical context. This paper presents SMART, a method for automatic analysis and recognition of modules for managed serverless applications. The proposed method creates an event-based graph by analyzing the standard serverless logs that document events involving the application’s functions and resources and utilizes well-known community detection algorithms (such as Louvain), with graph centrality metrics (such as degree centrality) to recognize the modules. SMART enables high-level visibility of the application’s structure and logical context which can facilitate security analysis and contribute to improved decision-making of incident response handlers, who typically do not have direct access to the application’s design and code, which can lead to challenges in fully understanding the system’s intricacies. We focused on the popular Amazon Web Services (AWS) Lambda serverless computing platform and evaluated the proposed method on three different demo applications (Airline Booking, VOD, and E-commerce). We compared SMART’s performance to four overlapping community detection algorithms and showed that it outperformed them in the task of module recognition, with a maximum improvement of 61% on the omega index metric compared to the Speaker-Listener Label Propagation algorithm. In addition, we demonstrate that the use of large language models (LLMs) with the knowledge gained by SMART can enrich security analysis insights.
