A measurement-based validation of theoretical results on quantum random number generators (QRNGs) is considered in the paper. We have designed an experimental setup built around a single-photon detector to record random datasets of photon arrival time differences with various parameter settings. The collected datasets are used to generate random bit sequences with and without dead time overestimation. The statistical properties of the bit sequences are compared with analytical results on the one hand and assessed with four of the most popular statistical test suites on the other hand. The measurement results validate that the dead time overestimation algorithm helps to eliminate unwanted correlations from the generated bit sequences in practice.

This paper addresses the implementation of time series classification on Internet of Things (IoT) devices with minimal resource usage while maintaining required accuracy levels. Although IoT devices have grown more powerful, optimizing resource usage remains essential to reduce costs and extend battery life. This work explores the practical aspects of developing and deploying time series classification models on IoT devices, emphasizing non-neural network models due to their lower resource demands. A detection system utilizing multiple predictions and a voting-based mechanism is constructed to enhance prediction stability. The input data comprises multivariate sensor streams of the same length. All computations are performed on the device, leveraging edge computing principles without external server dependency. This approach demonstrates how to balance accuracy and resource efficiency in IoT-based time series classification, offering a practical framework for similar applications. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Following a computational approach to music creation can serve as a transdisciplinary bridge between computer science, music and education by providing rich opportunities for teaching computing skills in interdisciplinary contexts. Making use of such learning contexts is one of the cornerstones of STEAM (STEM + Arts) education, a pedagogic approach focusing on integrating the arts and humanities into STEM fields. Despite numerous benefits reported in the literature, the number of STEAM programs integrated into formal learning contexts remains limited due to various integration challenges. In addressing these challenges, we developed and evaluated a gamified music computing learning application called muco, using the MVC software architecture along with React as the front-end, and Node and MariaDB as back-end technologies. The goal of the application is to make programming concepts more accessible and comprehensible to a broader public, and to simultaneously spark interest in music and music making. Making use of game mechanics, muco is conceptualised to teach computational thinking, and more specifically, introductory programming, in non-formal learning contexts. The usability of the application and impact of interdisciplinary learning is evaluated by means of both formative and summative testing. In this paper, we explore memory and Schema through the lens of mathematical representation. By defining themes related to cognitive processes, we propose a compression algorithm that measures and retains important information of previous (historic) user-Generative AI interaction. Time and memory are interconnected via a decay mechanism, where context gets more abstract as time passes. At the same time, memories with thematic resemblance can be structured into Schemas using set theory, based on rules influenced by a maturity threshold. This threshold is determined by factors such as criticality, emotional-user interaction, and mass, which is the measure of the summation of related memories. Our approach reconstructs memories into reusable parameters and formulates Schemas, offering a foundation for more personalized and cost-effective human-GAI interactions.

The escalating integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in various domains, especially Project Management (PM), has brought to light the imperative need for inclusivity in AI systems. This paper investigates the role of AI software in augmenting both the inclusiveness and efficiency within the realm of PM. The research pivots around specific criteria that define and measure the inclusiveness of AI in PM, highlighting how AI, when developed with inclusiveness in mind, can significantly enhance project outcomes. However, there are inherent challenges in achieving this inclusiveness, primarily due to biases embedded in AI learning databases and the design and development processes of AI systems. The study offers a comprehensive examination of AI's potential to revolutionize PM by enabling managers to concentrate more on people-centric aspects of their work. This is achieved through AI’s ability to perform tasks such as data collection, reporting, and predictive analysis more consistently and efficiently than human counterparts. However, the incorporation of AI in PM extends beyond mere efficiency; it represents a paradigm shift in the epistemology of PM, calling for a deeper understanding of AI's role and impact on society. Despite these advantages, the adoption of AI comes with significant challenges, particularly in terms of bias and inclusiveness. Biased AI learning databases, which use shared and reusable datasets, often perpetuate initially discriminatory algorithms. Moreover, unconscious biases and stereotypes of AI designers, developers, and trainers can inadvertently influence the behavior of the AI systems they create. This necessitates a paradigmatic shift in how AI systems are developed and governed to ensure they do not replicate or exacerbate existing social inequalities. With recent improvements in deep-learning architectures and availability of GPU hardware, state of the art deep learning (DL) has already manifested as powerful image processing technology in the clinical routine to provide segmentation results of high accuracy. As a drawback, it's black-box nature does not naturally feature inspection and post-processing by medical experts. We present a Graph segmentation (GS) approach that derives it's fitness function from arbitrary DL results in a generic way. To allow for efficient and effective post-processing by the medical experts, various interaction paradigms are presented and evaluated in this paper. The trade-off of GS compared to the initial DL results is marginal (delta JI= 0.196%), yet potential DL segmentation errors can be corrected in a reliable way. The intuitive approach shows a high level of both, inter and intra user reproducibility. Change propagation of corrected slices keeps the demand for user-interaction to a minimum when successfully correction potential weaknesses in the DL segmentations. Thereby, the formerly error-prone slice mini-batches get corrected in an automated way with the JI being significantly increased. © 2021 The Authors.

Including Quantum Key Distribution service into classical high-speed optical data transmission networks applying a dense wavelength division multiplexing technique via one joint fibre is a cost-effective solution to improve the network’s security. Several noise sources degrade the quality of the quantum channel in this multichannel system. Optical filtering cannot eliminate the optical nonlinear effects, like Spontaneous Raman Scattering caused by the classical optical channels. The paper thoroughly investigates this nonlinear optical effect with different combined classical and quantum system topologies. The applied model uses experimental values of Spontaneous Raman Scattering.

Indoor localization is one of the most requested applications for 5G networks. With the continuous deployment of new 5G networks, the implementation of a reliable, robust, and accurate indoor positioning algorithm has become a widely and thoroughly researched topic. However, the solutions realized for real-world environments still do not meet all performance expectations. In this paper, a real-world 5G environment is investigated and the feasibility of the measurements collected for positioning is discussed. Based on these findings, a framework for indoor positioning is proposed and evaluated using Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) measurements. Within the framework, an iterative algorithm is implemented to minimize a non-linear least squares function extended with four additional methods to mitigate the measurement errors caused mainly by non-line-of sight propagation. The best parameter settings are determined with hyperparameter optimization, and it is shown that with these settings, sub-meter positioning error is a viable goal in certain scenarios.

Optical background radiation measurement to characterize the optical noises is essential because the ambient light can be a degradation and limiting factor of classical and quantum free-space optical communication. A measurement setup for ambient optical noise measurement was designed and developed, and it is realized in a protective housing. The measurement unit is equipped with a camera with the same orientation as the detectors and takes photos of the sky. The optical power measurement was performed at different locations and different wavelength ranges, including 1550 nm and 810 nm optical bands. The measured results show that a clouded sky attenuates the signal heavily, and at the same time it increases the amount of noise at the receiver. The effects of the movement of clouds and dark rain clouds are also presented. © 2023 IEEE.

In the evolving landscape of computer networks, the demand for increased resilience and scalability is crucial to meet the growing challenges of modern applications and services. Achieving these requirements often involves complex networking protocols with sophisticated traffic engineering and network programming techniques. However, as classical networks transition towards such complexity, the proliferation of diverse protocols can lead to heightened protocol heterogeneity, resulting in a more intricate and costly maintenance environment. In light of these concerns, Segment Routing over IPv6 would be a logical candidate for solving this problem, as it can provide both traffic engineering and network programming capabilities in IP networks while relying only on the IPv6 protocol. However, scalability issues may arise with SRv6 in the context of larger networks. Network segments are identified with IPv6 addresses, and the presence of tens, or in some specific cases, even hundreds of segment identifiers in an IPv6 packet, would degrade network performance instead of the expected improvement. To address this problem, we present a novel approach, named SRv6 Policy Translation, to limit the number of segment identifiers used in a packet at any point in the traversal of SRv6 domains. Furthermore, we present a proof-of-concept Linux kernel module implementation of this technique with thorough performance measurements.
