In recent years, technologies have been introduced offering a large amount of computing and networking resources. New applications such as Google AdSense and BitTorrent can profit from the use of these resources. An efficient way of discovering and reserving these resources is by using the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) concept. SOA can be considered as a philosophy or paradigm in organizing and utilizing services and capabilities that may be under the control of different ownership domains. This paper presents an architecture that can be used to support end-to-end resource virtualization for Web 2.0 applications and in particular for peer-to-peer applications by using the Service Oriented Architecture concept.

We investigate the problem of defending wireless sensor networks against attacks that disrupt dynamic routing protocols. We propose a novel intrusion detection system that detects the presence of a sinkhole attack, or any attack that misleads traffic by understating the cost of an attack route. Our study shows that protocols designed to select the shortest path between two nodes will, through time, select a series of paths whose length exhibits a log-normal distribution. By deriving tolerance limits from the lognormal distribution of path lengths under normal conditions, we develop an anomaly detection scheme that detects sinkhole attacks in a computationally efficient manner. We show that our scheme can detect attacks with 96% accuracy and no false alarms using a single detection system in a simulated network.

Quality-of-Service (QoS) enhanced service-oriented systems are becoming more important due to the need to support various demands of different application domains. Such rising importance and inadequate existing solutions necessitate a finer feature-level development support that can promote systematic verification of more robust QoS features. Consequently, this paper proposes a systematic methodology to develop versatile or adaptive QoS features in service-oriented systems built for decentralised environments such as peer-to- peer and mobile networks.

An important problem in network intrusion detection is how to detect large scale coordinated attacks such as scans, worms and denial-of-service attacks. These coordinated attacks can be difficult to detect at an early stage, since the evidence of the attack may be widely distributed across different subnetworks in the Internet. A critical issue for research is how to detect these large scale attacks by correlating information from multiple intrusion detection systems in an efficient manner. Several collaborative detection systems have been proposed in the literature. However, these proposals have lacked large scale testing in real networks, and the practicalities of how to optimize the trade-off between detection accuracy and reaction time of these systems has not been demonstrated. To address these challenges, we propose LarSID, a scalable decentralized large scale intrusion detection framework. LarSID provides a service for defending against attacks by sharing potential evidence of intrusions between participant intrusion detection systems via a distributed hash table (DHT) architecture. In particular, we investigate how to optimize the trade-off between detection accuracy and reaction time of LarSID based on an analysis of a large, real-world intrusion detection dataset (DShield Dataset), which has been collected from over 1600 firewall administrators across the world. LarSID has been deployed and tested on the PlanetLab testbed, and is built on top of OpenDHT - a public DHT service. Our experimental results show significant reductions in detection latency compared to a centralized detection architecture. Currently, LarSID has been deployed on 128 PlanetLab nodes as a large scale intrusion detection service.

The decoupled nature of publish-subscribe (pub-sub) paradigm has gained popularity as a communication mechanism for distributed systems developed for decentralised networks. However, the lack of configurable and measurable properties in current decentralised pub-sub services introduces the issue of limited customisation. This shortcoming leads to the inability to meet different requirements needed by various application domains. In this paper, we address the challenge of supporting configurable properties in an overlay-oriented pub-sub scheme for decentralised networks. We use the measurable feature produced by the configurable properties to develop a mathematical model to analyse the behaviour of the pub-sub scheme with respect to important input factors such as distributions of subscriptions and events. These input factors ultimately affect the widely regarded performance requirement. Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility of our scheme and the validity of the derived model with a series of simulations.

The robustness of Peer-to-Peer systems is challenged by its highly dynamic nature. Frequent peer failure and departure events introduce uncertainty for which is considered exceptional in traditional distributed systems. The difficulty of monitoring such large scale networks is further exacerbated because it has to be done in a completely decentralized way for both scalability and reliability concerns. Some methods for estimating peer failure rate have been applied in Peer-to-Peer systems, however their comparative performance has not yet been reported in the literature. We simulate three different failure rate estimation methods and compare their accuracy and response time with respect to sample size, stabilization interval and neighbour set size. We conclude that the Maximum Likelihood Method introduced is better than the Failure Frequency based Methods commonly used in current Peer-to-Peer systems.

A significant open problem of case based reasoning system is a construction of better knowledge base. We propose a new framework for constructing alternative knowledge base in case based reasoning system based on rough sets and formal concept analysis. Our framework first applies rough set theory for discovering reduced cases required in a case based reasoning system. We then achieve further hierarchical structure of knowledge base using formal concept analysis. The result is the concept lattice knowledge base embedded to our proposed case based reasoning system. A part of case based reasoning system is developed with an example throughout. We also discuss how our proposed framework can be beneficial for a case based reasoning system.

As sensor networks become more pervasive there emerges a need for interfacing applications to perform common operations and transformations on sensor data. Web Services provide an interoperable and platform independent solution to these needs. A key challenge of using Web Services in this context is how to support ongoing sensor queries that persist over an extended period of time. In this paper we introduce Web Service Resource Framework (WSRF) mechanisms into the core services implementation of the NICTA Open Sensor Web Architecture (NOSA). NOSA is a suite of middleware services for sensor network applications which are built upon the OpenGIS Consortium's Sensor Web Enablement standard. WSRF expands the functionality of our services to handle simultaneous observational queries to heterogeneous Sensor Networks. It facilitates the adoption of a multi-user, multi-threaded service environment. Using components from the Globus Middleware platform, NOSA takes a major step forward to achieving the vision of a Sensor Grid.

In this paper, we propose a new hybrid case based reasoning system based on rough set theory, formal concept analysis and fuzzy sets. This system applies rough set theory to assure minimally sufficient cases in its case base. It uses formal concept analysis to reveal knowledge of attribute dependencies in terms of concept lattices. Numeric attributes are transformed to be suitable for formal concept analysis using fuzzy sets.

A combination of closed sequential pattern mining and closed itemset pattern mining was proposed to mine closed multidimensional sequential patterns. There are two ways for this combination; (1) mining closed itemset patterns from multidimensional information followed by mining closed sequential patterns from sequences associated with closed itemset patterns, and (2) mining closed sequential patterns from sequences followed by mining closed itemset patterns from multidimensional information associated with closed sequential patterns. In the first way the major cost is mining all sequences associated with closed itemset patterns. A similar problem occurs with the second way, the major cost is mining all multidimensional information associated with closed sequential patterns. Therefore, this paper proposes two new combinations that don't need to mine all sequences in the first combination, and all multidimensional information in the second combination. Both combinations can be effected by exploiting two concepts. In the first combination, any closed sequential patterns associated with a closed itemset patten I can be found from a set of closed sequential patterns associated with a closed itemset pattern I' if I sup I'. In the second combination, any closed itemset patterns associated with a closed sequential pattern s can be found from a set of closed sequential patterns associated with a closed itemset pattern s' if s sup s'.
