Service-oriented architectures provide integration of interoperability for independent and loosely coupled services. Web services and the associated new standards such as WSRF are frequently used to realise such service-oriented architectures. In such systems, autonomic principles of self-configuration, self-optimisation, self-healing and self- adapting are desirable to ease management and improve robustness. In this paper we focus on the extension of the self management and autonomic behaviour of a WSRF container connected by a structured P2P overlay network to monitor and rectify its QoS to satisfy its SIAs. The SLA plays an important role during two distinct phases in the life-cycle of a WSRF container. Firstly during service deployment when services are assigned to containers in such a way as to minimise the threat of SLA violations, and secondly during maintenance when violations are detected and services are migrated to other containers to preserve QoS. In addition, as the architecture has been designed and built using standardised modern technologies and with high levels of transparency, conventional Web services can be deployed with the addition of a SLA specification.

Detecting errors early within the development process for an embedded system assists a developer in avoiding excessive error correction costs and minimizing catastrophic losses resulting from failures in deployed systems. Towards that end, this paper presents i2MAP, an iterative and incremental goal-driven process for constructing an analysis-level UML model of an embedded system. The UML model is formally analyzed for adherence to the behavioral properties captured in a companion goal model. The process uses goal modeling to capture the requirements of the system, and uses UML to capture analysis-level structural and behavioral information. Both types of i2MAP models can be used to drive a rigorous approach to model-driven development of embedded systems. In this paper, we illustrate the i2MAP process and the accompanying tool suite in the development of an embedded system model for an adaptive light control system.

This paper reports experiences from an experiment in a software architecture course where the focus was both on giving students valuable education as well as getting important empirical results. The paper describes how the experiment was integrated in the course, and presents an evaluation of the experiment from an educational point of view. Further, the paper reflects on the costs and the benefits of carrying out an experiment in the context of a software architecture course for the involved stakeholders namely the researchers, the students, and the instructors. We also describe some guidelines for planning and executing experiments as a part of a software engineering course.

This paper proposes the study of a new computation model that attempts to address the underlying sources of performance degradation (e.g. latency, overhead, and starvation) and the difficulties of programmer productivity (e.g. explicit locality management and scheduling, performance tuning, fragmented memory, and synchronous global barriers) to dramatically enhance the broad effectiveness of parallel processing for high end computing. In this paper, we present the progress of our research on a parallel programming and execution model - mainly, ParalleX. We describe the functional elements of ParalleX, one such model being explored as part of this project. We also report our progress on the development and study of a subset of ParalleX $the LITL-X at University of Delaware. We then present a novel architecture model - Gilgamesh II - as a ParalleX processing architecture. A design point study of Gilgamesh II and the architecture concept strategy are presented.

The ultra-large-scale systems of the future require the transformation of software engineering into a computational discipline capable of fast and dependable software development. This paper discusses an emerging next-generation software engineering research area: function extraction (FX) technology for automated computation to the maximum extent possible of the behavior, correctness, and quality attributes of software components and their compositions into systems. An introduction to the mathematical foundations for computation of software behavior is provided, followed by an overview description of a rigorously designed experiment to quantify the potential for FX technology, and a discussion of a CERT STAR *Lab first application of FX technology to compute the behavior of code expressed in the Intel assembly language instruction set

WS-Policy4MASC is a new XML language that we developed for specification of monitoring and control (particularly, adaptation) policies in the Manageable and Adaptable Services Compositions (MASC) middleware. It extends the Web Services Policy Framework (WS-Policy) by defining new types of policy assertions. Goal policy assertions specify requirements and guarantees to be met in desired normal operation. Action policy assertions specify actions to be taken if certain conditions are met or not met. Utility policy assertions specify monetary values assigned to particular situations. Meta-policy assertions are used to specify which action policy assertions are alternatives and which business value-driven conflict resolution strategy should be used. WS- Policy4MASC also enables detailed specification of additional information necessary for run-time policy-driven management. We evaluated feasibility of the WS- Policy4MASC solutions by implementing a policy repository and other modules in MASC. We examined their usefulness on a set of realistic scenarios.

Anomaly detection is an important challenge for tasks such as fault diagnosis and intrusion detection in energy constrained wireless sensor networks. A key problem is how to minimise the communication overhead in the network while performing in-network computation when detecting anomalies. Our approach to this problem is based on a formulation that uses distributed, one-class quarter-sphere support vector machines to identify anomalous measurements in the data. We demonstrate using sensor data from the Great Duck Island Project that our distributed approach is energy efficient in terms of communication overhead while achieving comparable accuracy to a centralised scheme.

The ability to reengineer object-oriented legacy systems has become a vital matter in today's software industry. Early adopters of the object-oriented programming paradigm are now facing the problem of transforming their object-oriented "legacy" systems into full-fledged frameworks. To address this problem, a series of workshops has been organised to set up a forum for exchanging experiences, discussing solutions, and exploring new ideas. Typically, these workshops were organised as satellite events of major software engineering conferences, such as ECOOP [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11] and ESEC/FSE [12,13,14]. During the past 10 years, participants of this workshop series have been actively contributing to the state-of-the-art on reengineering of object-oriented systems. This special 10th anniversary edition was no exception and this report summarises the key discussions and outcome of that workshop.

Nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) provides flexible multiresolution, anisotropy and directional expansion for images. Compared with the foremost contourlet transform, it is shift-invariant and can overcome the pseudo-Gibbs phenomena around singularities. In addition, coefficients of NSCT are dependent on their neighborhood coefficients in the local window and cousin coefficients in directional subbands. In this paper, region energy and cousin correlation are defined to represent the neighbors and cousins information, respectively. Salience measure, as the combination of region energy and cousin correlation, is defined to obtain fused coefficients in the high-frequency NSCT domain. First, source images are decomposed into subimages via NSCT. Secondly, salience measure is computed. Thirdly, salience measure-maximum-based rule and average rule are employed to obtain high-frequency and low-frequency coefficients, respectively. Finally, fused image is reconstructed by inverse NSCT. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms wavelet-based fusion algorithms and contourlet transform-based fusion algorithms.
