Tuning friction with noise and disorder

We present numerical and experimental evidence which demonstrates that under certain conditions friction can be reduced by spatial disorder and/or thermal noise. We discuss possible mechanisms for this behavior.

software quality models are tools for focusing software enhancement efforts. Such efforts are essential for mission-critical embedded software, such as telecommunications systems, because customer-discovered faults have very serious consequences and are very expensive to repair. We present an empirical study that evaluated software quality models over several releases to address the question, "How long will a model yield useful predictions?" We also introduce the Classification And Regression Trees (CART) algorithm to software reliability engineering practitioners. We present our method for exploiting CART features to achieve a preferred balance between the two types of misclassification rates. This is desirable because misclassifications of fault-prone modules often have much more severe consequences than misclassifications of those that are not fault-prone. We developed two classification-tree models based on four consecutive releases of a very large legacy telecommunications system. Forty-two software product, process, and execution metrics were candidate predictors. The first software quality model used measurements of the first release as the training data set and measurements of the subsequent three releases as evaluation data sets. The second model used measurements of the second release as the training data set and measurements of the subsequent two releases as evaluation data sets. Both models had accuracy that would be useful to developers.

software distribution via networks provides timeliness and continual evolution that is not possible with physical media distribution methods. Organizations such as Microsoft, Marimba, and the Desktop Management Task Force are strengthening their efforts to package software systems in ways that are conducive to network distribution. The result of these efforts has led to the creation of software description languages and schema, but they do not address deployment issues in a complete, systematic fashion. The contribution of this paper is to define and explore the requirements for software deployment languages and schema. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

Over the past few years, research into system modeling has dwindled in favor of other interests in the field of configuration management. Outside influence, in the form of the emergence of the discipline of software architecture, demands that renewed attention is paid to system modeling because it places new requirements on, and offers new opportunities to, system modeling. This paper describes the project Quality-for-ASIS, aiming at the development of an extensive testing facility for ASIS implementations. First the specific problems and requirements are presented. After a section about the basic concepts of ASIS and after a short introduction to testing, the designs and implementations for testing important subsets of ASIS are described. Finally, adequacy coverage statistics for a test set based on the ACVC compiler validation suite are provided. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

The Farmer model is a basic model of the farming methodology that loads the component defined in the aspect-object from the PICR into the distributed object after analyzing the real world entity in various aspects and defining the aspect elements as the Aspect-Object. This model is a model that formalizes the concept of downloading the componentware from the PICR to the distributed entity node type that describes the abstract object, the aspect node type that describes this object, the link type that shows the relativity between the entity and the aspect, and the attribute type that shows the characteristics of the entity. In this paper, the platform independent TMN agents are designed by the diagram of the Farmer model.

We present results of providing database support to biomedicine via federation of SDB Cooperation/Integration based upon the KEGG GUI for molecular biology. The federation provides a common link to three molecular biology databases. The added value of the federation is freedom from consulting multiple references to ascertain the full set of enzymatic reactions in a metabolic pathway, and the option of selecting multiple queries to submit to the federated SDBs. Each of the SDBs is extensive, but incomplete. The union of the SDBs, implemented transparently by the federation, is more complete. Each SDB provides a different approach to the options available for data presentation and a different set of Web server tools for data analysis. Thus, an important part of the added value of the federation is the cross-fertilization available in the union of the molecular biological content, the presentation of data, and the tools available for analysis.

This document1 contains definitions of a wide range of concepts specific to and widely used within temporal databases. In addition to providing definitions, the document also includes explanations of concepts as well as discussions of the adopted names. The consensus effort that lead to this glossary was initiated in Early 1992. Earlier versions appeared in SIGMOD Record in September 1992 and March 1994. The present glossary subsumes all the previous documents. The glossary meets the need for creating a higher degree of consensus on the definition and naming of temporal database concepts. Two sets of criteria are included. First, all included concepts were required to satisfy four relevance criteria, and, second, the naming of the concepts was resolved using a set of evaluation criteria. The concepts are grouped into three categories: concepts of general database interest, of temporal database interest, and of specialized interest. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

A poorly understood and underdeveloped part of the software process is software release management, which is the process through which software is made available to and obtained by its users. Complicating software release management is the increasing tendency for software to be constructed as a "system of systems", assembled from preexisting, independently produced, and independently released systems. Both developers and users of such software are affected by these complications. Developers need to accurately document complex and changing dependencies among the systems constituting the software. Users wilt be heavily involved in the location, retrieval, and assembly process of the systems in-order to appropriately configure the software to their particular environment. In this paper we identify the issues encountered in software release management, and present an initial set of requirements for a software release management tool. We then describe a prototype of such a tool that supports both developers and users in the software release management process. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1997.
