In this paper we demonstrate how static concurrency analysis techniques can be used to verify application-specific properties of an architecture description. Specifically, we use two concurrency analysis tools, INCA, a flow equation based tool, and FLAVERS, a data flow analysis based tool, to detect errors or prove properties of a WRIGHT architecture description of the gas station problem. Although both these tools are research prototypes, they illustrate the potential of static analysis for verifying that architecture descriptions adhere to important properties, for detecting problems early in the lifecycle, and for helping developers understand the changes that need to be made to satisfy the properties being analyzed. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1997.

Few tools exist to address the post-development activities of configuring, releasing, installing, updating, reconfiguring, and even de-installing a software system. Certainly there is no unified approach for all of these activities, and none that can take full advantage of a wide-area network. The software Dock represents an architecture for supporting post-development activities in such a setting. It is designed as a system of loosely-coupled, cooperating, distributed components that are bound together by a wide-area messaging and event system. In this paper we describe the software Dock architecture and discuss the use of a prototype in deploying a complex system.

It is well known that mesh quality affects both efficiency and accuracy of CFD solutions. Meshes with distorted elements make solutions both more difficult to compute and less accurate. In this article, we review a recently proposed technique for improving mesh quality as measured by element angle (dihedral angle in three dimensions) using a combination of optimization-based smoothing techniques and local reconnection schemes. Typical results that quantify mesh improvement for a number of application meshes are presented. We then examine effects of mesh quality as measured by the maximum angle in the mesh on the convergence rates of the commonly used GMRES and Multigrid solvers. Numerical experiments are performed that quantify the cost and benefit of using mesh optimization schemes for incompressible and weakly compressible flow over a cylinder. © 1997, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

Presents a process model for software measurement methods. The proposed model details the distinct steps from the design of a measurement method, to its application, then to the analysis of its measurement results, and lastly to the exploitation of these results in subsequent models, such as in quality and estimation models. From this model, a validation framework can be designed for analyzing whether or not a software metric could qualify as a measurement method. The model can also be used for analyzing the coverage of the validation methods proposed for software metrics.

Costas (1984) and sonar sequences are those patterns for which you send out exactly one signal at every time slot, and with the special property that even if only two signals return you can reconstruct the whole pattern. This last point means that there is no ambiguity. This is also referred in the literature as having perfect or one hit auto-correlation. The goal involved in constructing sonars is, given n to obtain an n by l sequence for l as large as possible. Different from the Costas or sonar sequences the auto-correlation function of our pattern is not perfect and actually the numbers of hits grows with larger lengths. On the other hand the number of frequencies is always fixed to 3 and is therefore easy and cost effective to implement. We compare our construction with the table of Maric and Titlebaum (1992) best sonars and our new construction compares quite favorably with the table of best sonars of Moreno, Games and Taylor (1993). © 1997 IEEE.

Most systems that manage distributed information on Internet have difficulties in retrieving relevant information for they are not able to include the exact semantics of retrieval queries that users request. In this paper, we propose an automatic query expansion method based on term distribution, which naturally reflects semantics of retrieval terms in order to enhance the performance of information retrieval. The SVD technique in the LSI is utilized in the proposed method to measure the term distribution which appears similar to a query. Terms appearing most similar to the query in consideration of the distribution are appended to the query. Thereby, the query can hit documents without having common terms but with common concepts. An automatic term reduction technique is also proposed which does not choose to append all the terms in the same distribution area. The experimental results show our method maintains comparable retrieval effectiveness as the other LSI methods without having to append many unnecessary terms.

In packet-switched networks, queueing of packets at the switches can result when multiple connections share the same physical link. To accommodate a large number of connections, a switch can employ link-scheduling algorithms to prioritize the transmission of the queued packets. Due to the high-speed links and small packet sizes, a hardware solution is needed for the priority queue in order to make the link schedulers effective. But for good performance, the switch should also support a large number of priority levels (P) and be able to buffer a large number of packets (N). So a hardware priority queue design must be both fast and scalable (with respect to N and P) in order to be implemented effectively. In this paper we first compare four existing hardware priority queue architectures, and identify scalability limitations on implementing these existing architectures for large N and P. Based on our findings, we propose two new priority queue architectures, and evaluate them using simulation results from Verilog HDL and Epoch implementations.

He currently the program manager for the Sustainable Hardware and Affordable Readiness Practice Program (SHARP). is a Navy-wide logistics research and development prgram aimed at the successful transiton of proved technologies inot the fleet. SHARP focuses on reducing acquisition performance capability reliability maintainability and readiness of these systems. Mr. Grubb has served as a department director for the past eleven years. His most recent assignment was as director of the Tactical Computer Resources and Test Equipment Department. This organization provided acquisition and in-service engineering support of the Navy's tectical embedded computers priphirals displays and mass memory storage devices. The organization also provided a complete range of product engineering and metrology engineerig services for SSP NevSeaSysCom and the Trident Program. Prior to this appointment Mr. Grubb was deptuy director psysical security programs department and site responsible for program management and system integration of ashore integrated security systems. Mr. Grubb holds a B.S. degree in industrial engineering from Iowa State Universtiy an M.S. degree in industrial engineering from Purdue University and has copleted the course work (Dec.'96 for a master's degree in public and environment affairs at Indiana University-Purdue Univeristy Indianapolis. Dr. Alfred Skolnick operates System Science Consultants (SSC) specilizing in strategic planning technical program definiton technology assessment and engineering analyses on selected matters of national interest. He has taught physics mathematics and management sciences at University of Virginia and Marymount University and is currently adjunct professor of mathematics at Northern Virginia Community College. In an era of fiscal austerity, downsizing and unforgiving pressure upon human and economic capital, it is an Augean task to identify resources for fresh and creative work. The realities of the day and the practical demands of more immediate fleet needs can often dictate higher priorities. Yet, the Navy must avoid eating its seed corn. Exercising both technical insight and management foresight, the fleet, the R&D community, the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OpNav) and the product engineering expertise of the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) are joined and underway with integrated efforts to marry new, fully demonstrated technologies and operational urgencies. Defense funding today cannot sponsor all work that can be mission-justified over the long term because budgets are insufficient to support product maturation within the classical development cycle. However, by rigorous technical filtering and astute engineering of both marketplace capabilities and currently available components, it is possible in a few select cases to compress and, in effect, integrate advanced development (6.3), engineering development (6.4), weapon procurement (WPN), ship construction (SCN), operation and maintenance (O&M,N) budgetary categories when fleet criticalities and technology opportunities can happily meet. In short, 6.3 funds can be applied directly to ''ripe gateways'' so modern technology is inserted into existing troubled or aging systems, sidestepping the lengthy, traditional development cycle and accelerating practical payoffs to recurrent fleet problems. To produce such constructive results has required a remarkable convergence of sponsor prescience and engineering workforce excellence. Distributed configuration management is intended to support the activities of projects that span multiple sites. NUCM (Network-Unified Configuration Management) is a testbed that we are developing to help us explore the issues of distributed configuration management. NUCM separates configuration management repositories (i.e. the stores for versions of artifacts) from configuration management policies (i.e. the procedures by which the versions are manipulated) by providing a generic model of a distributed repository and an associated programmatic interface. This paper describes the model and the interface, presents an initial repository distribution mechanism, and sketches how NUCM can be used to implement two rather different configuration management policies, namely check-in/check-out and change sets.
