This paper describes an approach for generating customized benchmark applications from a software architecture description using a Model Driven Architecture (MDA) approach. The benchmark generation and performance data capture tool implementation is based on widely used open source MDA frameworks. The business logic of the benchmark application is modeled in UML and generated by taking advantage of the existing generation "cartridges" so that the current component technology can be exploited in the benchmark. This greatly reduces the effort and expertise needed for benchmarking with complex component technology. We have also extended the MDA framework to model and generate a load testing suite and automatic performance measurement infrastructure. The approach complements current model-based performance prediction and analysis methods by generating the benchmark application from the same application architecture that the performance models are derived from. This provides the potential for tightly integrating runtime performance measurement with model-based prediction either for model validation or improving model prediction accuracy, We illustrate the approach using a case study based on EJB component technology.

In 2005, Stevens Institute of technology's System Design and Operational Effectiveness (SDOE) program added audio lectures to their online Fundamentals of Systems engineering course. This paper compares results from four instantiations of this online course with no audio lectures delivered in 2004 to results from three instantiations of the same online course with audio lectures delivered in 2005. The analysis addresses differences in student participation and performance, team project quality, and student survey scores between the two types of course offerings. The objective of this analysis is to better understand the contribution of audio lectures to the learning process. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

The research field of Intelligent Service Robots, which has become more and more popular over the last years, covers a wide range of applications from climbing machines for cleaning large storefronts to robotic assistance for disabled or elderly people. When developing service robot software, it is a challenging problem to design the robot architecture by carefully considering user needs and requirements, implement robot application components based on the architecture, and integrate these components in a systematic and comprehensive way for maintainability and reusability. Furthermore, it becomes more difficult to communicate among development teams and with others when many engineers from different teams participate in developing the service robot. To solve these problems, we applied the COMET design method, which uses the industry-standard UML notation, to developing the software of an intelligent service robot for the elderly, called T-Rot, under development at Center for Intelligent Robotics (CIR). In this paper, we discuss our experiences with the project in which we successfully addressed these problems and developed the autonomous navigation system of the robot with the COMET/UML method. Designing component-based application that meets performance requirements remains a challenging problem, and usually requires a prototype to be constructed to benchmark performance. Building a custom benchmark suite is however costly and tedious. This demonstration illustrates an approach for generating customized component-based benchmark applications using a Model Driven Architecture (MDA) approach. All the platform related plumbing and basic performance testing routines are encapsulated in MDA generation "cartridges"along with default implementations of testing logic. We will show how to use a tailored version of the UML 2.0 Testing Profile to model a customized load testing client. The performance configuration (such as transaction mix and spiking simulations) can also be modeled using the UML model. Executing the generated deployable code will collect the performance testing data automatically. The tool implementation is based on a widely used open source MDA framework AndroMDA. We extended it by providing a cartridge for a performance testing tailored version of the UML 2.0 Testing Profile. Essentially, we use OO-based meta-modeling in designing and implementing a lightweight performance testing domain specific language with supporting infrastructure on top of the existing UML testing standard. © 2005 ACM.

A member of the University of Idaho College of Engineering faculty. She graduated from the University of California at Davis. Frincke is the co-director and co-founder of the university's Center for Secure and Dependable Software (CSDS). She was the program chair for the 2nd International Workshop on Recent Advances in Intrusion Detection (RAID). A professor of Computer Science at the College of Integrated Science and Technology at James Madison University in Harrisonburg Virginia. He holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin and a BA in philosophy from the University of Houston. Reynolds is the Director of Information System Security Education at James Madison University. Since 1997 Reynolds has led the development of the first remote Internet-based curriculum that leads to an M.S. degree in computer science with a concentration in information security. Thus far 160 students have completed this program. A professor of computer information systems at Idaho State University and the manager of its Simplot Decision Support Center.

Transient stability improvement by fuzzy logic-controlled braking resistor

The authors present the results of analyses about transient stability augmentation by the fuzzy logic-controlled braking resistor. Following a major disturbance in electric power systems, variable rotor speed of the synchronous generator is measured, and then the current through the braking resistor is controlled by the firing-angle of the thyristor switch, which is controlled by the fuzzy logic. Thus, the braking resistor controls the accelerating power in generators and makes the system transiently stable. Simulations are performed by using EMTP (Electro-Magnetic Transients program). Through the simulation results of both balanced (3LG: Three-phase-to-ground) and unbalanced (2LG: Double line-to-ground;2LS: Line-to-line;and 1LG: Single line-to-ground) faults, the effectiveness of the fuzzy controlled braking resistor is demonstrated and the optimal conductance value of the braking resistor in enhancing the transient stability is investigated.

Adaptive navigation support can be of great help in large hypermedia systems supporting learners as well as users searching for specific information. A wide variety of adaptive mechanisms have been implemented in existing adaptive hypermedia systems that provide better and better suggestions to the user what hyperlinks to follow. We suggest that adaptive navigation support should scaffold a learner in an educational hypermedia system to select the appropriate links. We show that this implies that selecting a link is an educationally relevant activity that should not always be reduced to a trivial task by powerful adaptive mechanisms. It follows that learners require sometimes different kinds of adaptive navigation support than users looking for information. Finally, we will suggest how to extend current mechanisms to provide scaffolded navigation support to learners. © 2002 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Survey of reduced workload and crewing strategies for ocean patrol vessels

He has applied most of his 24 years of experience in the application of human engineering technology to maritime systems. Mr. Baker has directed much of Carlow's efforts to reduce ship workload and to improve human performance and maritime safety through application of human factors methods and data. He is a Certified Industrial Ergonomist (CIE) as well as a Certified Human Factors Engineering Professional (CHFEP). Both certifications were granted by Oxford Research where Mr. Baker also serves as an Advisory Board member. Russell D. Krull P.E. is a senior engineer with A&T/Proteus Engineering with more than 18 years of experi-ence in marine engineering naval architecture and program management including 16 years of active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard. Recent experience includes advanced ship design studies engineering software development technical support for the USMC Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle propulsion systems analyses ship structural engineering and cargo handling systems engineering. Mr. Krull has an M.S.E. in naval architecture and marine engineering and an M.S.E. in industrial and operations engineering from University of Michigan and a B.S. in ocean engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Capt. Glenn L. Snyder USCG. Regrettably since this paper was originally written Capt. Snyder has passed away. At the time of his death he was an operations specialist assigned to the Coast Guard's Deepwater Capabilities Replacement Project as Chief of Human Systems Integration. He served as commanding officer of the patrol boat Cape George (WPB-95306) the icebreaking tug Biscayne Bay (WTGB-104) and the cutter Legare (WMEC-911). A 1975 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Capt. Snyder held an M.A. in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College and an M.A. in international relations from Salve Regina College. In addition he was a 1998 fellow of the Foreign Service

The U.S. Coast Guard is in the concept exploration phase of its Integrated Deepwater System (IDS) acquisition project. This project will define the next generation of surface, air and command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) assets used to perform the Coast Guard's missions in the IDS environment (>50 NM off the U. S. coastline). As part of early technology investigations, the needs exist to: (1) analyze the workload requirements of the IDS, (2) identify alternative means to perform ship's work, and (3) optimize ship manning consistent with ship workload, performance criteria, and the available tools and equipment aboard. To reduce shipboard work requires an understanding of the mission and support requirements placed on the vessel and crew, how these requirements are currently met, and how requirements might otherwise be met to reduce workload and crew size. This study examined currently implemented workload and manpower reducing approaches of commercial maritime fleets, U.S. and foreign navies, and foreign coastguards. These approaches were analyzed according to evaluation criteria approved by the IDS acquisition project team. From this, strategies for shipboard work reduction that may be considered for adoption by the IDS were identified and analyzed according to performance and costs factors. Ten workload-reducing strategies were identified: damage control, bridge, multiple crewing, engineering, risk acceptance, modularity, deck, enabling technologies, ship/personnel readiness, and operability and maintainability.

Summary form only given. In 1996, Rochester Institute of technology launched the US's first Bachelor of Science program in software engineering. The program is innovative in many respects, including its interdisciplinary sponsorship by the Departments of Computer Science and Computer engineering, which are themselves housed in two distinct colleges of RIT. In addition, the curriculum was developed with input from across a broad range of industrial software development domains: commercial off-the-shelf (COTS), finance and banking, embedded real-time control systems, and telecommunications and networking. The result is a rich, broad-based curriculum, where the foundation laid by the core computer science and engineering courses provides the basis for deeper upper division study in software engineering. The curriculum is very much a work in progress. The paper focuses on experiences to date, including issues related to administering a multidisciplinary program, student response to the initial set of courses, and plans for the future.

Pascal's long and successful run at West Point illustrated Winston Churchill's dictum that, "The absence of alternatives clears the mind wonderfully." However, by the mid-90s, the United States Military Academy was finding that Pascal, long the educational workhorse, was no longer the clear choice for serious computer science education. The decision was taken to evaluate alternatives to Pascal. The criteria selected for programming language evaluation were student learning outcomes based on course goals and objectives. The controlled educational environment of a service academy provides an excellent opportunity to conduct research using control groups and experimental groups. We conducted a side by side comparison of the use of Pascal, which was specifically designed for instructional purposes, and Ada in an introductory course. The experiment demonstrated that students were much more successful in Ada than in Pascal, and led to the revision of the Academy core curriculum to use Ada 95 in our introductory computer science class. This paper discusses the details of our comparison, citing specific examples to illustrate a rational basis for evaluating programming language features against course objectives.
