Question-controlled Text-aware Image Captioning (Qc-TextCap), is the task of generating a distinctive scene text aware caption according to several personalized questions when given an image. However, due to the diversity of visual scene, it is hard for current Optical Character Recognition (OCR) systems to extract complete scene text sentences from the images. Besides, existing works are limited in their use of question features and visual features. In this paper, we propose a Multimodal Transformer plus Scene text clustering and Cross modal attention (MTSC) to tackle the above challenges. We devise scene text clustering to group relevant scene text pieces which are detected as separate results by current OCR systems. To better utilize the information in questions and images, we design cross modal attention to enrich the features of both modalities. We extensively evaluate our model on the two Qc-TextCap datasets and superior results are achieved when comparing to state-of-the-art approaches.

software-defined networking(SDN) is a revolutionary technology that facilitates network management and enables programmatically efficient network configuration, thereby improving network performance and flexibility. However, as the application programming interfaces(APIs) of SDN are low-level or functionality-restricted, SDN programmers cannot easily keep pace with the ever-changing devices, topologies, and demands of SDN. By deriving motivation from industry practice, we define a novel network algorithm programming language(NAPL) that enhances the SDN framework with a rapid programming flow from topology-based network models to C++ implementations, thus bridging the gap between the limited capability of existing SDN APIs and the reality of practical network management. In contrast to several state-of-the-art languages, NAPL provides a range of critical high-level network programming features:(1) topology-based network modeling and visualization;(2) fast abstraction and expansion of network devices and constraints;(3) a declarative paradigm for the fast design of forwarding policies;(4) a built-in library for complex algorithm implementation;(5) full compatibility with C++ programming; and(6) userfriendly debugging support when compiling NAPL into highly readable C++ codes. The expressiveness and performance of NAPL are demonstrated in various industrial scenarios originating from practical network management.

Recent trends in Network Function Virtualization (NFV) combined with Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G applications have reshaped the network service offering. In particular, Service Function Chains (SFCs) can associate network functions with physical and virtual resources towards providing a complete network service. Concurrently, the management of a continuously expanding network and the fulfillment of the applications’ requirements pave the way for autonomic network solutions. Intent Based Networking (IBN) is a novel paradigm that aims to achieve the automatic orchestration of network services and the assurance of their performance. Accordingly, in this paper, we propose a novel automated network assurance model, based on Model Predictive Control, to guarantee the Quality of Service (QoS) and security requirements of multi-tenant and IBN-enabled SFCs. In this context, corrective decisions are proactively taken, in the form of incoming intent relocations among the SFCs. The results reveal that our model can assure with high probability the application requirements and minimize QoS violations.

Video2Reward: Generating Reward Function from Videos for Legged Robot Behavior Learning

Learning behavior in legged robots presents a significant challenge due to its inherent instability and complex constraints. Recent research has proposed the use of a large language model (LLM) to generate reward functions in reinforcement learning, thereby replacing the need for manually designed rewards by experts. However, this approach, which relies on textual descriptions to define learning objectives, fails to achieve controllable and precise behavior learning with clear directionality. In this paper, we introduce a new video2reward method, which directly generates reward functions from videos depicting the behaviors to be mimicked and learned. Specifically, we first process videos containing the target behaviors, converting the motion information of individuals in the videos into keypoint trajectories represented as coordinates through a video2text transforming module. These trajectories are then fed into an LLM to generate the reward function, which in turn is used to train the policy. To enhance the quality of the reward function, we develop a video-assisted iterative reward refinement scheme that visually assesses the learned behaviors and provides textual feedback to the LLM. This feedback guides the LLM to continually refine the reward function, ultimately facilitating more efficient behavior learning. Experimental results on tasks involving bipedal and quadrupedal robot motion control demonstrate that our method surpasses the performance of state-of-the-art LLM-based reward generation methods by over 37.6% in terms of human normalized score. More importantly, by switching video inputs, we find our method can rapidly learn diverse motion behaviors such as walking and running. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Gossip learning (GL), as a decentralized alternative to federated learning (FL), is more suitable for resource-constrained wireless networks, such as Flying Ad-Hoc Networks (FANETs) that are formed by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). GL can significantly enhance the efficiency and extend the battery life of UAV networks. Despite the advantages, the performance of GL is strongly affected by data distribution, communication speed, and network connectivity. However, how these factors influence the GL convergence is still unclear. Existing work studied the convergence of GL based on a virtual quantity for the sake of convenience, which failed to reflect the real state of the network when some nodes are inaccessible. In this paper, we formulate and investigate the impact of inaccessible nodes to GL under a dynamic network topology. We first decompose the weight divergence by whether the node is accessible or not. Then, we investigate the GL convergence under the dynamic of node accessibility and theoretically provide how the number of inaccessible nodes, data non-i.i.d.-ness, and duration of inaccessibility affect the convergence. Extensive experiments are carried out in practical settings to comprehensively verify the correctness of our theoretical findings. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

We consider ergodic weighted sum rate (WSR) maximization in a massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output system. Existing solutions iteratively minimize the average WSR based on all the historical information, and use bisection search to satisfy the power constraint at each iteration, resulting in both high storage burden and high computational complexity. In contrast, we propose an efficient stochastic proximal weighted minimum mean-square error (SPWMMSE) algorithm, which updates the precoder only based on the current single channel realization, without checking the power constraint at each iteration. Furthermore, we propose a novel proximal term to incorporate all the previous channel and surrogate function information in precoder updates. Our analysis shows that SPWMMSE converges to the stationary point of the original ergodic WSR maximization problem almost surely. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of SPWMMSE over the current best alternatives.

Over recent years, DevOps has gained more attention within the software industry, owing to its pivotal role in facilitating continuous software delivery. The significant demand for DevOps practitioners necessitates substantial adjustments in conventional software engineering courses in higher educational institutions. Recent studies have highlighted DevOps principles, challenges, best practices, and tools to facilitate continuous delivery and deployment pipelines from an industrial perspective. As numerous universities are now introducing courses related to DevOps for students majoring in software engineering and computer science, this high demand for DevOps practitioners requires non-trivial adjustments in traditional software engineering courses and educational methodologies, including practices for teaching DevOps, training in DevOps, the level to which DevOps is currently taught and applied to measure the gap between teaching practices compared to industrial requirements. Our vision paper aims to highlight the crucial need for updated policies and tools to improve DevOps training in higher education, providing guidelines. By aligning academic curricula with industry standards, we can ensure students are better equipped for the demands of the workforce, fostering a seamless transition from academia to industry and promoting innovation in software engineering practices.

Hazardous driving scenarios are critical for the development and testing of highly autonomous vehicles. Recent studies have proposed new approaches for extracting hazardous scenarios from driving videos, which greatly improve the detection accuracy compared with traditional approaches that extract information from structured kinematic data. However, direct processing on driving videos is costly, and the videos need to be uploaded and processed in a centralized manner. In this study, we propose a novel approach for reducing the cost of video analysis while maintaining high accuracy in hazardous scenario identification. Firstly, the videos are significantly compressed into motion profile images that contain motion trajectories of objects. Secondly, a lightweight CNN with attention mechanism has been designed to extract risky trajectory features of the conflicting traffic objects. Furthermore, data augmentation has been applied to increase the generalizability of the model. The proposed approach achieves significantly lightweight network size, and meanwhile, experimental results have demonstrated that the approach achieves high accuracy with sensitivity 0.95, specificity 0.85 and AUC 0.95, which outperforms state-of-the-art hazardous scenario identification approaches. The efficient execution of identification implies that it is suitable to be distributed and deployed at each vehicle, and consequently, videos could be processed via edge computing, which would improve the diversity of hazardous scenarios and the efficiency of scenario collection for further research work. © 2021 IEEE.

Feature selection plays a pivotal role in the data preprocessing and model-building pipeline, significantly en-hancing model performance, interpretability, and resource efficiency across diverse domains. In population-based optimization methods, the generation of diverse individuals holds utmost importance for adequately exploring the problem landscape, particularly in highly multi-modal multi-objective optimization problems. Our study reveals that, in line with findings from sev-eral prior research papers, commonly employed crossover and mutation operations lack the capability to generate high-quality diverse individuals and tend to become confined to limited areas around various local optima. This paper introduces an augmen-tation to the diversity of the population in the well-established multi-objective scheme of the genetic algorithm, NSGA-II. This enhancement is achieved through two key components: the genuine initialization method and the substitution of the worst individuals with new randomly generated individuals as a re-initialization approach in each generation. The proposed multi-objective feature selection method undergoes testing on twelve real-world classification problems, with the number of features ranging from 2,400 to nearly 50,000. The results demonstrate that replacing the last front of the population with an equivalent number of new random individuals generated using the genuine initialization method and featuring a limited number of features substantially improves the population's quality and, consequently, enhances the performance of the multi-objective algorithm.

IMMAT: Mesh Reconstruction from Single View Images by Medial Axis Transform Prediction

The representation of a 3D shape is a key element for capturing the overall structure as well as the local details. In this paper, we propose to predict a mesh representation of the Medial Axis Transform (called medial mesh) as an intermediate representation with our IMMAT framework, to reconstruct the 3D shape from a single view image. Because the MAT contains the skeleton topology and local thickness information, it not only enhances the ability to reconstruct topologically complex shapes but also better preserves the local details with its thickness control. The framework consists of three modules. The Image2Sphere module predicts the medial spheres inside the shape surface and the Topology Prediction module predicts the topological relationship (skeleton) between the predicted spheres. Then the MAT Smoothing module smooths the predicted MAT and fine-tunes the coordinates and radii of the spheres by graph convolution. The final 3D surface can be reconstructed by converting the predicted MAT to an implicit surface through CSG operation and then extracting the boundary surface through Marching Cubes. Experimental results show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods both quantitatively and qualitatively on the reconstruction task. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd
