An Empirical Study on Small-Sized Datasets Based on Eubank’s Optimal Spacing Theorem

Conventional machine learning methods for software effort estimation (SEE) have seen an increase in research interest. Conversely, there are few research that try to evaluate how well deep learning techniques work in SEE. This can be attributed to the relatively small sizes of SEE datasets. The goal of the study is to establish a threshold for small-sized datasets in SEE. Additionally, it looks into how well certain deep learning and traditional machine learning models perform on small-sized datasets. From the body of existing literature, plausible SEE datasets are extracted and ranked along with their attributes and number of project cases. The ranking of the project instances is discretized into three classes (small, medium, and large) using Eubank’s optimal spacing theory. Using the leave-one-out cross-validation, each small-sized dataset is used to train two deep learning models and five conventional machine learning models. Each model’s ability to make predictions is evaluated using its mean absolute error. Results show that, on small-scale datasets, deep learning models outperform traditional machine learning models in terms of prediction accuracy, which contradicts what is previously known. Individuals with sensorineural hearing loss often experience difficulty comprehending speech when background noise is present. This paper investigates the extent of this problem in various listening scenarios and with different types of background sounds. Additionally, the section explores the contributing factors to this challenge such as reduced audibility, reduced frequency selectivity, loudness recruitment, and dead regions in the cochlea where there are no surviving inner hair cells and or neurons. The sections evaluate different techniques for compensating for the effects of these factors. While signal-processing methods using the output of a single microphone to compensate for reduced frequency selectivity have had limited success, techniques utilizing multiple microphones have proven effective. Amplitude compression has also been effective in compensating for the effects of loudness recruitment, enabling individuals to understand speech across a wide range of sound levels. Next, the paper delves into the technical aspects of implementing fall detection systems in hearing aids, learning algorithms are also investigated for their potential in enhancing fall detection accuracy and minimizing false alarms. Furthermore, the importance of user-friendly interfaces and customization features in ensuring the effectiveness and acceptance of fall detection alerts is also highlighted. The paper also addresses the ethical and privacy considerations associated with fall detection in hearing aids. It emphasizes the need for transparent data handling practices and user consent, while also addressing potential concerns related to user autonomy and intrusion. © 2025 IEEE.

With the substantial volume of social media data generated daily and the concurrent emergence of powerful multimedia modification techniques, detecting manipulations in photographs and videos has become an important task. This study examines the strength of a deep learning-based efficient net model for detecting manipulation in multimedia images. This study examines the publicly accessible benchmark dataset DFDC to prove its efficiency. We also highlighted the real-world challenges and emerging trends to combat deep-fakes. The research experiment resulted in and confirmed the efficiency of Efficient-Net as it performed well in both the training and testing stages, exhibiting more accuracy and reduced loss. The test accuracy varies between 50 and 95, with epochs spanning from 0 to 10. © 2024 IEEE.

Provably secure authentication protocol for traffic exchanges in unmanned aerial vehicles

Crowd dynamics analysis and behavior recognition in surveillance videos based on deep learning

Video surveillance is widely adopted across various sectors for purposes such as law enforcement, COVID-19 isolation monitoring, and analyzing crowds for potential threats like flash mobs or violence. The vast amount of data generated daily from surveillance devices holds significant potential but requires effective analysis to extract value. Detecting anomalous crowd behavior, which can lead to chaos and casualties, is particularly challenging in video surveillance due to its labor-intensive nature and susceptibility to errors. To address these challenges, this research contributes in two key areas: first, by creating a diverse and representative video dataset that accurately reflects real-world crowd dynamics across eight different categories;second, by developing a reliable framework, ‘CRAB-NET,’ for automated behavior recognition. Extensive experimentation and evaluation, using Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory networks (ConvLSTM) and Long-Term Recurrent Convolutional Networks (LRCN), validated the effectiveness of the proposed approach in accurately categorizing behaviors observed in surveillance videos. The employed models were able to achieve the accuracy score of 99.46% for celebratory crowd, 99.98% for formal crowd and 96.69% for violent crowd. The demonstrated accuracy of 97.20% for comprehensive dataset achieved by the LRCN underscores its potential to revolutionize crowd behavior analysis. It ensures safer mass gatherings and more effective security interventions. Incorporating AI-powered crowd behavior recognition like ‘CRAB-NET’ into security measures not only safeguards public gatherings but also paves the way for proactive event management and predictive safety strategies. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Build Yourself before Collaboration: Vertical Federated Learning with Limited Aligned Samples

Vertical Federated Learning (VFL) has emerged as a crucial privacy-preserving learning paradigm that involves training models using distributed features from shared samples. However, the performance of VFL can be hindered when the number of shared or aligned samples is limited, a common issue in mobile environments where user data are diverse and unaligned across multiple devices. Existing approaches use feature generation and pseudo-label estimation for unaligned samples to address this issue, unavoidably introducing noise during the generation process. In this work, we propose Local Enhanced Effective Vertical Federated Learning (LEEF-VFL), which fully utilizes unaligned samples in the local learning before collaboration. Unlike previous methods that overlook private labels owned by each client, we leverage these private labels to learn from all local samples, constructing robust local models to serve as solid foundations for collaborative learning. Additionally, we reveal that the limited number of aligned samples introduces distribution bias from global data distribution. In this case, we propose to minimize the distribution discrepancies between the aligned samples and the global data distribution to enhance collaboration. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of LEEF-VFL in addressing the challenges of limited aligned samples, making it suitable for VFL in mobile computing environments. Leveraging the Potential of Large Language Models

This study focuses on enhancing Natural Language Processing (NLP) in generative AI chatbots through the utilization of advanced pre-trained models. We assessed five distinct Large Language Models (LLMs): TRANSFORMER MODEL, FALCON 7B, LAMINI-FLAN-T5-783M, LLAMA-2-7B, and LLAMA-2-13B to identify the most effective one. Our findings revealed that the LLAMA Model excels in comprehending user queries and delivering precise responses during conversations. The article elucidates the methodology employed to evaluate and select various models for our chatbot. Through rigorous testing, we determined that the LLAMA-2-13B model exhibits enhanced response time and accuracy. Additionally, we employed tools such as Facebook Artificial Intelligence Similarity Search (FAISS) and experimented with user interfaces like Streamlit and Chainlit to enhance the chatbot's user-friendliness. The research underscores the significance of selecting the appropriate model for crafting efficient chatbots. Ultimately, the LLAMA-13B model emerged as the standout performer, showcasing superior performance. Benchmark assessments, including HellaSwag and WinoGrande, which gauge common sense reasoning, were employed to evaluate our chatbot's capabilities. The study concludes that LLAMA-based models hold significant promise for the development of innovative and user-friendly chatbots in the future. Povzetek: Študija se osredotoča na izboljšanje obdelave naravnega jezika (NLP) v generativnih AI klepetalnicah z uporabo naprednih vnaprej usposobljenih modelov. Analizirali so pet modelov: TRANSFORMER MODEL, FALCON 7B, LAMINI-FLAN-T5-783M, LLAMA-2-7B in LLAMA-2-13B. Model LLAMA-13B se je izkazal kot najboljši z vrhunskimi rezultati na testih HellaSwag in WinoGrande. The acquisition of medical images from various modalities can provide a number of practical challenges that can be addressed through medical image registration. Intensity-based registration methods, which are used in multi-modal registration, merge multiple images with the same content into a single representation by applying image transformation. It is essential to edit photographs as best as you can. It is highly important to improve the similarity measure between the various photographs. We introduce a new method for registering lung’s CT image affected with COVID-19 in this work since the image registration process is fundamentally an improvement problem. Lung computed tomography image registration is a technique for aligning pre- and post-contrast images for analysis the effect of COVID-19 virus in the lung. A meta-heuristics-based optimization technique called FWA-IATF was explored for registering lung CT images. Following that, the FWA-IATF algorithm successfully registers the images. The results of registration based on the FWA-IATF method and PSO approach are compared. The results indicate that the FWA-IATF-based registration methods outperform the PSO-based registration approach while registering lung CT images. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Is GPT-4 Conscious?

GPT-4 (Generative Pre-Trained Transformer 4) is often heralded as a leading commercial AI offering, sparking debates over its potential as a steppingstone toward Artificial General Intelligence. But does it possess consciousness? This paper investigates this key question using the nine qualitative measurements of the Building Blocks theory. GPT-4's design, architecture, and implementation are compared to each of the building blocks of consciousness to determine whether it has achieved the requisite milestones to be classified as conscious or, if not, how close to consciousness GPT-4 is. Our assessment is that, while GPT-4 in its native configuration is not currently conscious, current technological research and development is sufficient to modify GPT-4 to have all the building blocks of consciousness. Consequently, we argue that the emergence of a conscious AI model is plausible in the near term. The paper concludes with a comprehensive discussion of the ethical implications and societal ramifications of engineering conscious AI entities. © 2024 World Scientific Publishing Company.
