Many different dynamic routing architectures are available, including sidecar-based routing, routing through a central entity such as an event store or gateway, or architectures with multiple routers. These architectures are currently based on vastly different implementation concepts, such as API Gateways, Message Brokers, or Service Proxies. We propose a new approach that abstracts all these architecture patterns using one Adaptive Dynamic Routers architecture. We hypothesize that a dynamic self-adaptation of the routing architecture is beneficial over any fixed architecture selections for reliability and performance trade-offs. That is, if encountered with traffic and load changes, our approach dynamically self-adapts between more central or distributed routing to optimize system reliability and performance. We evaluate our approach by analyzing our previously-measured data during an experiment of 1200 hours of runtime. Our extensive systematic evaluation with 1089 cases confirms that our hypothesis holds and our approach is beneficial in terms of reliability and performance. Moreover, we empirically validate our results on Google Cloud Platform infrastructure.

Models are popular artefacts in the software development process which promise to improve stakeholder communication and the overall quality of a software system under construction. Recent research proposes that the usefulness of models is not limited only to the software design phase: Empirical evidence indicates that manual analysis of a running system is improved when models are linked to recorded runtime events. However, software architects are confronted with various design decisions when designing a system that yields the required runtime events and correlates them to the model elements they originate from. The contribution of this paper is a taxonomy of architectural design decisions distilled from a series of qualitative studies following a multi-method research study design: We utilized coding techniques from Grounded Theory to build an initial taxonomy from architectural concepts found in the literature, and verified and extended the taxonomy independently by five novice software architects in a practical scenario. The resulting taxonomy captures essential architectural decisions when implementing a system that supports the analysis of its runtime behaviour using models. We then performed initial steps towards a architectural guidance model by applying the taxonomy to another realistic scenario, following the Design Science Research method, in order to analyze the properties and deepen our own technical understanding of the captured concepts in the taxonomy.

Change is an essential characteristic of software development, as software systems must respond to evolving requirements, platforms, and other environmental pressures. In this paper, we discuss the concept of software evolution from several perspectives. We examine how it relates to and differs from software maintenance. We discuss insights about software evolution arising from Lehmanpsilas laws of software evolution and the staged lifecycle model of Bennett and Rajlich. We compare software evolution to other kinds of evolution, from science and social sciences, and we examine the forces that shape change. Finally, we discuss the changing nature of software in general as it relates to evolution, and we propose open challenges and future directions for software evolution research.

Indoor maps are required for multiple applications, such as, navigation, building maintenance and robotics. One of common methods for map generation is laser scanning. In such maps, not only geometry of the map is of interest, but also its quality. This study aims at developing methods for real-time generation of indoor maps using features extracted from pointclouds obtained by a robot with their simultaneous quality assessment. We investigate, how this quality can be quantified for feature-based maps. First, we introduce a method for modeling 2D maps into 3D models that enable their usage for localization. Second, we review and evaluate a number of algorithms that can enable us to address features in a map. Hence, we enable the generation of objects from a pointcloud that has been sensed. Finally, we study several aspects of the map quality and we formalize them into metrics that can be applied to quantify their quality. © Authors 2019.

According to Ferrante, software will learn to update itself more quickly and efficiently. He also added that open-source technologies are gaining greater traction in the marketplace. According to Chang, the advancement of software tools will enable users to customize commercial applications by performing simple programming, which virtually allows everyone to play the role of programmer.

Safety verification of fault-tolerant control systems is essential for the success of autonomous robotic systems. A control architecture called Mission Data System, developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, takes a goal-based control approach. In this paper, the development of a method for converting a goal network control program into a hybrid system is given and a process for converting logic associated with the goal network into transition conditions for the hybrid automata is developed. The resulting hybrid system can then be verified for safety in the presence of failures using existing symbolic model checkers. An example task and goal network is designed, converted to hybrid automata, and verified using symbolic model checking software for hybrid systems.

It has become clear that spacecraft system complexity is reaching a threshold where customary methods of control are no longer affordable or sufficiently reliable. At the heart of this problem are the conventional approaches to systems and software engineering based on subsystem-level functional decomposition, which fail to scale in the tangled web of interactions typically encountered in complex spacecraft designs. Furthermore, there is a fundamental gap between the requirements on software specified by systems engineers and the implementation of these requirements by software engineers. software engineers must perform the translation of requirements into software code, hoping to accurately capture the systems engineer's understanding of the system behavior, which is not always explicitly specified. This gap opens up the possibility for misinterpretation of the systems engineer's intent, potentially leading to software errors. This problem is addressed by a systems engineering methodology called State Analysis, which provides a process for capturing system and software requirements in the form of explicit models. This paper describes how requirements for complex aerospace systems can be developed using State Analysis and how these requirements inform the design of the system software, using representative spacecraft examples. With the fast development of highly-integrated distributed systems (cluster systems), designers face interesting memory hierarchy design choices while attempting to avoid the notorious disk swapping. Swapping to the free remote memory through Memory Collaboration has demonstrated its cost-effectiveness compared to over provisioning the cluster for peak load requirements. Recent memory collaboration studies propose several ways on accessing the under-utilized remote memory in static system configurations, without detailed exploration of the dynamic memory collaboration. Dynamic collaboration is an important aspect given the run-time memory usage fluctuations in clustered systems. Further, as the interest in memory collaboration grows, it is crucial to understand the existing performance bottlenecks, overheads, and potential optimization. In this paper we address these two issues. First, we propose an Autonomous Collaborative Memory System (ACMS) that manages memory resources dynamically at run time to optimize performance. We implement a prototype realizing the proposed ACMS, experiment with a wide range of real-world applications, and show up to 3x performance speedup compared to a non-collaborative memory system without perceivable performance impact on nodes that provide memory. Second, we analyze, in depth, the end-to-end memory collaboration overhead and pinpoint the corresponding bottlenecks. © 2012 IEEE.

Product line development places emphasis on quality attributes like understandability, maintainability, reusability and variability. Better modularization techniques like aspect-oriented programming are supposed to improve these attributes. In the context of an industrial case study in the domain of infrastructure software for toll systems from Siemens AG, Germany, we have investigated how OO designs can be enhanced using AO techniques. We have explored, in particular, how sequential crosscutting concerns can be modularized using AspectJ and how distributed ones can be modularized using AWED, a system that features aspects with explicit distribution. Concretely, we show how sequential and distributed aspects improve the implementation of the charge calculation functionality that is central to real-world tolling systems. Copyright 2007 ACM.
