Sri Lankan students, especially those from rural and low-income backgrounds, face significant challenges in accessing higher education, including university applications, career planning, and financial aid. This research introduces an AI-powered platform designed to provide personalized assistance through university course recommendations, career guidance, financial aid information, and AI-generated mock aptitude tests. The platform employs Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) for course recommendations, Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) for career guidance, and a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) model for financial aid navigation. Additionally, AI-driven algorithms with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology support exam preparation. Data from students and universities informed model training, and evaluations showed high accuracy and user satisfaction across components. Results indicated that the platform effectively aligns educational resources with students' academic and career goals, promoting greater educational accessibility and support for underserved Sri Lankan students. © 2024 IEEE.

Large Language Models(LLMs) have become widely recognized in recent years for their exceptional performance in language generation capabilities. As a result, an unprecedented rise is seen in its use cases in various domains specifically involving Natural Language Processing(NLP). These models however perform suboptimally when exploited in the field of studies where authenticity of the generated content is a critical aspect. One such domain is usage of LLM for exploration of the life of Prophet Muhammad S.A.W(commonly referred to as Seerah). It is of utmost significance to ensure the authenticity and reliability in the sources used and reported by the LLM due to the sensitive nature of the domain. The contemporary LLMs, however, lack the explainability in their response due to their inherent black-box nature. In our study, we have presented a novel LLM named SeerahGPT that addresses this challenge with the help of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). This technique enables the model to utilize both parametric and nonparametric memories for generating response of queries. Our model, built on the Llama-2-7b architecture, employs Sentence Transformer embedding to effectively retrieve relevant information. The model's capabilities are augmented by integrating it with a corpus having Islamic texts such as the Quranic translation and Hadith collections, and historical accounts. The model's performance is benchmarked against its base model using both quantitative and qualitative metrics. The comparative analysis with Llama-2-7b revealed that SeerahGPT incorporation with external knowledge sources, provided more authentic and verifiable responses, despite the others exhibiting greater fluency. Performance metrics such as BLEU, ROUGE, and METEOR indicated SeerahGPT's better accuracy and contextual handling. The perception of offensive language varies based on cultural, social, and individual perspectives. With the spread of social media, there has been an increase in offensive content online, necessitating advanced solutions for its identification and moderation. This paper addresses the practical application of an offensive language taxonomy, specifically targeting Hebrew social media texts. By introducing a newly annotated dataset, modeled after the taxonomy of explicit offensive language of (Lewandowska-Tomaszczyk et al., 2023), we provide a comprehensive examination of various degrees and aspects of offensive language. Our findings indicate the complexities involved in the classification of such content. We also outline the implications of relying on fixed taxonomies for Hebrew. © 2024 Association for Computational Linguistics.

The use of assistive technology in the field of education is now a common practice in today's tech-driven era. The implementation is quite rampant in all levels and sections of education, including by special needs students with hearing impairments. With the help of technology or Internet of Things (IoT), they are offered with better opportunities to improve their communication and the teaching and learning process especially when it comes to sign language. However, the situation is quite different for Muslim deaf individuals. Sign language is not only used for communication but also as a form for reciting the Quran. Yet, the utilization of technology in the area of sign language for Quranic recitation is still limited. Hence, the goal of this study was to design and develop a sensor-based sign language recognition device consisting of a sensory smart glove and mobile application to detect Arabic sign language alphabets used in Quran recitation. The experimental result shows that the gesture recognition rate of 28 different Arabic alphabet signs, performed by 7 different signers, is 79.08%. The significance of the system lies in its mobility and capability to recognize the hand gestures regardless of the background noise. © 2024 IEEE.

Mutual Retinex: Combining Transformer and CNN for Image Enhancement

Images captured in low-light or underwater environments are often accompanied by significant degradation, which can negatively impact the quality and performance of downstream tasks. While convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and Transformer architectures have made significant progress in computer vision tasks, there are few efforts to harmonize them into a more concise framework for enhancing such images. To this end, this study proposes to aggregate the individual capability of self-attention (SA) and CNNs for accurate perturbation removal while preserving background contents. Based on this, we carry forward a Retinex-based framework, dubbed as Mutual Retinex, where a two-branch structure is designed to characterize the specific knowledge of reflectance and illumination components while removing the perturbation. To maximize its potential, Mutual Retinex is equipped with a new mutual learning mechanism, involving an elaborately designed mutual representation module (MRM). In MRM, the complementary information between reflectance and illumination components are encoded and used to refine each other. Through the complementary learning via the mutual representation, the enhanced results generated by our model exhibit superior color consistency and naturalness. Extensive experiments have shown the significant superiority of our mutual learning based method over thirteen competitors on the low-light task and ten methods on the underwater image enhancement task. In particular, our proposed Mutual Retinex respectively surpasses the state-of-the-art method MIRNet-v2 by 0.90 dB and 2.46 dB in PSNR on the LOL 1000 and FIVEK datasets, while with only 19.8% model parameters. © 2017 IEEE.

As virtual reality (VR) continues to expand, particularly in social VR platforms and immersive gaming, understanding the factors that shape user experience is becoming increasingly important. Avatars and locomotion methods play central roles in influencing how users identify with their virtual representations and navigate virtual spaces. However, little is known about the impact of congruence between these two factors. We conducted a user study with 30 participants, employing two avatar types (human and gorilla) and two locomotion methods (human-like arm-swing and gorilla-like arm-roll), to assess the effects of avatar-locomotion congruence. Our results indicate that congruent avatar-locomotion conditions enhance avatar identification and user experience. © 2025 IEEE.

The continuous revolution in Artificial Intelligence (AI) has played a significant role in the development of key consumer applications, including Industry 5.0, autonomous decision-making, fault diagnosis, etc. In practice, autonomous and intelligent robots and flying vehicles (i.e., drones) are also becoming the integral part of Industry 5.0. These vehicles are attaining significant importance nowadays because of their applications in consumer electronics. However, there may be numerous privacy issues in such an infrastructure. Nevertheless, neural computing-driven security solutions have played a significant role in overcoming the security and privacy issues of AI-driven intelligent flying vehicles. Motivated by these facts, this article presents a neural computing-based access control protocol for AI-driven flying vehicles to prevent all possible security threats. A detailed security evaluation of the devised protocol is done formally using the extensively recognized Real-Or-Random (ROR) oracle model. Similarly, the informal security analysis ensures the resistance of our scheme against various potential attacks under the assumptions of CK and DY adversarial models. Moreover, detailed performance scrutiny of the devised protocol with various existing schemes shows the robustness and supremacy of our scheme in terms of computation, communication overhead, and security attributes. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

The increasing prevalence of Extended Reality (XR) and head-mounted displays (HMDs), alongside rapid advancements in 3D reality capture technology, unlocks a new paradigm for capturing and reliving past memories/experiences through XR. Current methods for accessing and interacting with these "XR Memories"still lack the ability to fully leverage the range of capabilities afforded by XR and HMDs. We introduce TangibleMoments, a novel framework that enables users to embed XR memories onto physical objects, transforming those objects into "Moments"- tangible user interfaces for accessing and interacting with XR memories. We describe and illustrate five interaction methods as part of this framework: Creating Moments, Recalling Moments, Sharing Moments, Copying Moments, and Clearing Moments. We showcase an initial prototype and discuss possible extensions. © 2025 IEEE.

This research presents a web-based real-time Sri Lankan Sign Language (SLSL) translation system aimed at bridging communication gaps for individuals with speech and hearing disabilities. Leveraging advanced machine learning, the system translates SLSL gestures into Tamil vocal language and American Sign Language (ASL), supported by video-to-text conversion with Yolo-NAS, voice model and clips of animated 3D characters. Key objectives included accurate vocabulary mapping for selected vocabularies, real-time translation with minimal latency, an audio player to display Tamil voice and animated 3D characters to convey nuanced ASL gestures. The system is integrated as one website, but each translation part has separate pages where users can navigate and fulfill their needs. User feedback highlighted the simple and direct user interface design and fluidity of interactions, particularly the animated 3D characters in SLSL to ASL translation. Challenges included optimizing gesture rendering and expanding vocabulary coverage, which will be addressed in future work. This research underscores the potential of AI-driven solutions for enhancing accessibility and inclusivity in communication with cross-lingual and cross-model communication features. © 2024 IEEE.
