The paper introduces a transformative Telemedicine Kiosk designed to enhance healthcare in remote areas by harnessing the synergy of computational intelligence and telemedicine. This advanced kiosk utilizes real-time video conferencing and comprehensive patient monitoring systems, all underpinned by Responsible AI practices that ensure ethical data management and the protection of patient privacy. Equipped with an ESP32 Wi-Fi module, the kiosk provides seamless communication between patients and medical officers, facilitating immediate care and consultation. The system goes beyond diagnostics: it supports healthcare professionals with an integrated medication dispensing mechanism powered by IoT technology. Our investigation delves into the implications of human factors, economics, and technological advances for the future of telemedicine. We present an innovative solution that not only advances healthcare accessibility but also embodies a commitment to responsible and ethical healthcare service provision in underserved regions.

Adjusting Logit in Gaussian Form for Long-Tailed Visual Recognition

It is not uncommon that real-world data are distributed with a long tail. For such data, the learning of deep neural networks becomes challenging because it is hard to classify tail classes correctly. In the literature, several existing methods have addressed this problem by reducing classifier bias, provided that the features obtained with long-tailed data are representative enough. However, we find that training directly on long-tailed data leads to uneven embedding space. That is, the embedding space of head classes severely compresses that of tail classes, which is not conducive to subsequent classifier learning. This paper therefore studies the problem of long-tailed visual recognition from the perspective of feature level. We introduce feature augmentation to balance the embedding distribution. The features of different classes are perturbed with varying amplitudes in Gaussian form. Based on these perturbed features, two novel logit adjustment methods are proposed to improve model performance at a modest computational overhead. Subsequently, the distorted embedding spaces of all classes can be calibrated. In such balanced-distributed embedding spaces, the biased classifier can be eliminated by simply retraining the classifier with class-balanced sampling data. Extensive experiments conducted on benchmark datasets demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method over the state-of-the-art ones. Multi-View Incongruity Learning for Multimodal Sarcasm Detection

Multimodal sarcasm detection (MSD) is essential for various downstream tasks. Existing MSD methods tend to rely on spurious correlations. These methods often mistakenly prioritize non-essential features yet still make correct predictions, demonstrating poor generalizability beyond training environments. Regarding this phenomenon, this paper undertakes several initiatives. Firstly, we identify two primary causes that lead to the reliance of spurious correlations. Secondly, we address these challenges by proposing a novel method that integrate Multimodal Incongruities via Contrastive Learning (MICL) for multimodal sarcasm detection. Specifically, we first leverage incongruity to drive multi-view learning from three views: token-patch, entity-object, and sentiment. Then, we introduce extensive data augmentation to mitigate the biased learning of the textual modality. Additionally, we construct a test set, SPMSD, which consists potential spurious correlations to evaluate the the model’s generalizability. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of MICL on benchmark datasets, along with the analyses showcasing MICL’s advancement in mitigating the effect of spurious correlation. Liver cancer is one of the liver diseases with a high morbidity and mortality. At present, surgery is still the main treatment method for liver cancer. Therefore, it is particularly important to accurately segment the liver on CT imaging. Deep learning-based algorithms struggle to derive shape priors due to the irregular shape of the liver and blurring organ borders in CT images. We present a two-stage 3D deep active contour model 3DAC based on the V-net and CV models, in which the neural network is guided to learn the global features by regressing the signed distance map. The signed distance function can also be used as an initialization level set function. Then, the active contour model is extended to three dimensions to enable evolution of the overall liver surface. The advantages of the proposed method for liver segmentation were validated on the AbdomenCT-lK dataset. Compared with the DALS method, the Dice coefficient and the Jaccard coefficient are improved by 4.29% and 4.58%, the ASD and 95HD indicators are improved by 5. 96mm and 10. 04mm, which proves the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method. © 2022 IEEE.

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) depend on feedforward and feedback ways to obtain good performance in image denoising. However, how to obtain effective structural information via CNNs to efficiently represent given noisy images is key for complex scenes. In this paper, we propose a cross Transformer denoising CNN (CTNet) with a serial block (SB), a parallel block (PB), and a residual block (RB) to obtain clean images for complex scenes. A SB uses an enhanced residual architecture to deeply search structural information for image denoising. To avoid loss of key information, PB uses three heterogeneous networks to implement multiple interactions of multi-level features to broadly search for extra information for improving the adaptability of an obtained denoiser for complex scenes. Also, to improve denoising performance, Transformer mechanisms are embedded into the SB and PB to extract complementary salient features for effectively removing noise in terms of pixel relations. Finally, a RB is applied to acquire clean images. Experiments illustrate that our CTNet is superior to some popular denoising methods in terms of real and synthetic image denoising. Some methods in the world university ranking institutions still have weaknesses. Among the university rankings, Webometrics focused on quantitative studies related to website and content phenomena and is considered easy to measure because it bases ranking criteria on university activities on the internet. On the webometrics, the percentage of weight on the criteria of excellence which is quite high (40 %), makes the university pay attention to achieving that score. The existing method in weighting the criteria using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) needs to include =n(n-1)/2 questions for each group of n-criteria paired comparisons. In this study, the Consistent Fuzzy Preference Relation (CFPR) method is used to study the factors/criteria to determine what strategy universities will take to improve the webometrics ranking in terms of excellence. The CFPR techniques are used to reduce expert assessment steps to only as much as n-1 to ensure consistency at the level with n criteria. Based on the calculation results, it can be concluded that the strategy for improving the excellence score is prioritized on three main criteria in sequence, namely improving scholarly rank (A), measuring the number of scientific papers (B), recognizing scholarly ranks (C). The weight of each criterion in the sequence is 0.51, 0.32, and 0.17. Some strategies to increase the excellence score based on the main priority of sub-criteria and sub-sub criteria are explained in this study. © 2021 ACM.

Feature Fusion from Head to Tail for Long-Tailed Visual Recognition

The imbalanced distribution of long-tailed data presents a considerable challenge for deep learning models, as it causes them to prioritize the accurate classification of head classes but largely disregard tail classes. The biased decision boundary caused by inadequate semantic information in tail classes is one of the key factors contributing to their low recognition accuracy. To rectify this issue, we propose to augment tail classes by grafting the diverse semantic information from head classes, referred to as head-to-tail fusion (H2T). We replace a portion of feature maps from tail classes with those belonging to head classes. These fused features substantially enhance the diversity of tail classes. Both theoretical analysis and practical experimentation demonstrate that H2T can contribute to a more optimized solution for the decision boundary. We seamlessly integrate H2T in the classifier adjustment stage, making it a plug-and-play module. Its simplicity and ease of implementation allow for smooth integration with existing long-tailed recognition methods, facilitating a further performance boost. This paper presents a variational Bayesian kernel selection (VBKS) algorithm for sparse Gaussian process regression (SGPR) models. In contrast to existing GP kernel selection algorithms that aim to select only one kernel with the highest model evidence, our VBKS algorithm considers the kernel as a random variable and learns its belief from data such that the uncertainty of the kernel can be interpreted and exploited to avoid overconfident GP predictions. To achieve this, we represent the probabilistic kernel as an additional variational variable in a variational inference (VI) framework for SGPR models where its posterior belief is learned together with that of the other variational variables (i.e., inducing variables and kernel hyperparameters). In particular, we transform the discrete kernel belief into a continuous parametric distribution via reparameterization in order to apply VI. Though it is computationally challenging to jointly optimize a large number of hyperparameters due to many kernels being evaluated simultaneously by our VBKS algorithm, we show that the variational lower bound of the log-marginal likelihood can be decomposed into an additive form such that each additive term depends only on a disjoint subset of the variational variables and can thus be optimized independently. Stochastic optimization is then used to maximize the variational lower bound by iteratively improving the variational approximation of the exact posterior belief via stochastic gradient ascent, which incurs constant time per iteration and hence scales to big data. We empirically evaluate the performance of our VBKS algorithm on synthetic and massive real-world datasets. © 2020, Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (***). This study aims to address the urban vehicle parking issues by proposing a solution using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) through image processing and a sensor-based hardware system. Integrating these technologies forms a Smart Parking Management System (SPMS) to automate parking processes and enhance the parking experience. The study aims to create an efficient system that eliminates manual vehicle registration and optimizes space utilization. ANPR and IoT-based sensors help users identify the available slots and pay only for the actual parking duration, which will help to minimize the fixed billing rates. The proposed ANPR system processes vehicle number plates at entry, ensuring seamless identification and eliminating manual registration. IoT sensors monitor real-time slot occupancy, transmitting data to a web admin panel. This panel provides insights such as entry and exit times, total parking duration, and billing costs, facilitating efficient management and remote monitoring. The ANPR-based SPMS reduces reliance on manual processes, streamlining entry procedures. By dynamically assessing slot availability through IoT sensors, users can locate unoccupied spaces quickly, which enhances user convenience. The web admin panel allows administrators to monitor the system remotely, ensuring smooth operations and maintaining accurate records. This study introduces a comprehensive solution to urban parking challenges by integrating ANPR and IoT technologies. The SPMS improves efficiency, reduces human resource needs, and enhances user experience with flexible billing based on actual duration. In this research paper, we conducted a comparative study to measure the effectiveness of the provided technical support in computing project-based learning (PjBL) courses. Students learn much better by solving authentic real-world problems through PjBL. PjBL in computing education has proven to boost student motivation and engagement while enhancing academic performance. Crucial to PjBL in computing is the technical support that the instructors can provide to students, which is required for sustained, successful learning during project tasks. Without adequate support, PjBL will fall short of accomplishing its goals, leading to a rise in student frustration, a loss of motivation and engagement, and compromised learning outcomes. Measuring the impacts and effectiveness of the provided support is imperative for fostering continuous improvement, informed decision-making, and student success. It enables instructors to assess the impacts of their strategies, improve their approaches, and utilize their resources more effectively. To measure the impacts of technical support on students during PjBL, we performed a comparative study on two undergraduate computing courses in Spring 2024, Fundamentals of software engineering and Database Systems. In both courses, students work on two assigned projects, one with little and inadequate support and the other with adequate support. We administered a post-survey after each project was completed. We analyzed students' selfreflection responses across four sub-scales, support satisfaction, motivation, self-efficacy, and project satisfaction. The results show a statistically significant increase in the supported project in the Fundamentals of software engineering course and no difference in the Database Systems course. This finding is likely due to other differences between the two projects for the Database Systems course beyond support, such as project scale.
