In a previous work [5] it was shown that the best measure for the efficiency of a single burst-correcting code is obtained using the Gallager bound as opposed to the Reiger bound. In this paper, an algorithm that optimizes the search for the best (shortened) cyclic burst-correcting codes is presented. The use of Gray codes in the algorithm optimizes the search, in the sense that no repeated syndromes are computed.

The paper proposes to simulate feasibility of using virtualization technology to auto-scaling problem in cloud computing. It uses ARENA simulation software to build two different models. Environmental sustainability issues and the costs of new power generation and transmission have increased the interest in evolving current power grid to new technologies. The Smart Grid is a promising technology, since it allows a distributed computing approach with potentials for self-diagnosing/-healing, reliable multi-user communication and fast hard real-time control. However, the missing standardization associated with heterogeneity of legacy systems and wide-area service demands, makes very challenging to adopt Smart Grid in a cost-effective way. By considering this, we propose the Session-Oriented Communication System (SOCSys) to overcome the above issues by enhancing Smart Grid with truly reliable and robust capabilities over heterogeneous environments. SOCSys achieves this goal by orchestrating session-control with innovative network-centric facilities operating over a wireless mesh Information Network compliant with IEEE 802.11e/s standard. The simulation results show that SOCSys improved network performance in terms of bandwidth utilization and minimization of delay, while consuming low network resources. Graphical analyses showed that SOCSys supported multimedia sessions with excellent quality, where it outperforms the experiments with regular settings.

Single-row routing is a method for routing pair of nodes set in a single-row axis. The nets construct the wire without traverse each other in the printed circuit board design that has been drawn from left to right. The main purpose in single-row routing is to achieve the optimal results of minimum congestion arise from the number of horizontal tracks in the network. Optimal results for a single layer network have been achieved through a model called Enhanced Simulated Annealing Single-row Routing (ESSR). However, a single layer model suffers from non-tolerable lower bound values with high congestion depending on the network size. These results may further be improved by partitioning the network into two or more layers. In this paper, a technique for partitioning the nodes from a single-row network into several layers of planar graphs by using k-means algorithm has been proposed. The experiment result shows that the proposed technique is able to minimize the network congestions.

Data analytics involves choosing between many different algorithms and experimenting with possible combinations of those algorithms. Existing approaches however do not support scientists with the laborious tasks of exploring the design space of computational experiments. We have developed a framework to assist scientists with data analysis tasks in particular machine learning and data mining. It takes advantage of the unique capabilities of the Wings workflow system to reason about semantic constraints. We show how the framework can rule out invalid workflows and help scientists to explore the design space. We demonstrate our system in the domain of text analytics, and outline the benefits of our approach.

Bringing all of these together can pose the lecturer with a dilemma that is not easily solvable. This paper presents how problem-based learning, a pedagogical methodology that is popular in medicine and other disciplines, can be used to accomplish these goals in a single course module. It describes a research project which analyses the implementation of problem-based learning within a M. Sc. softwareengineering Quality Module, and evaluates the outcomes against published expectations.

Requirements prioritization is recognized as an important but challenging activity in software product development. For a product to be successful, it is crucial to find the right balance among competing quality requirements. Although literature offers many methods for requirements prioritization, the research on prioritization of quality requirements is limited. This study identifies how quality requirements are prioritized in practice at 11 successful companies developing software intensive systems. We found that ad-hoc prioritization and priority grouping of requirements are the dominant methods for prioritizing quality requirements. The results also show that it is common to use customer input as criteria for prioritization but absence of any criteria was also common. The results suggests that quality requirements by default have a lower priority than functional requirements, and that they only get attention in the prioritizing process if decision-makers are dedicated to invest specific time and resources on QR prioritization. The results of this study may help future research on quality requirements to focus investigations on industry-relevant issues.

IEEE 802.16e standard provides wide coverage and high bandwidth for subscribers in a metropolitan area network. It introduces Multicast and Broadcast Rekeying Algorithm (MBRA) which is a multicasting scheme to communicate with many users concurrently. Although ELAPSE (for Efficient sub-Linear rekeying Algorithm with Perfect SEcrecy) improves on the deficiencies of MBRA, the algorithm poorly responds to scalability issue. This paper proposes a Scalable Rekeying Algorithm (SRA) based on a complete binary tree structure. SRA is introduced with linear linked list structure in order to make the system more scalable. Evaluation analysis shows that SRA manages to improve the scalability issue in MBRA for Mobile WiMAX.
