This paper presents a Gaussian mixture probability hypothesis density (GM-PHD) smoother for tracking multiple maneuvering targets that follow jump Markov models. Unlike the generalization of the multiple model GM-PHD filters, our aim is to approximate the dynamics of the linear Gaussian jump Markov system (LGJMS) by a best-fitting Gaussian (BFG) distribution so that the GM-PHD smoother can be carried out with respect to an approximated linear Gaussian system. Our approach is inspired by the recognition that the BFG approximation provides an accurate performance measure for the LGJMS. Furthermore, the multiple model estimation is avoided and less computational cost is required. The effectiveness of the proposed smoother is verified with a numerical simulation.

In this paper, an adaptive iterative learning control (ILC) scheme is proposed for trajectory tracking of uncertain delay systems based on model matching technique. The reference model is a delay system operating over in a finite time interval. An iterative model matching controller is designed and an iteration domain adaptive law is chosen to estimate the unknown parameters. It shows that the model matching technique can be applied in a straightforward method to ILC problem. A simulation example is included to illustrate the designed scheme.

Professional Issues in software engineering (PISE) has been taught as part of the computer systems undergraduate degree programme at the University of Limerick using a multi-institutional collaborative pedagogy. PISE considers the ethical, legal and social consequences of the design, implementation and use of computer and information systems. Students from UL collaborated with students from other universities in USA, England and Malta, working together in geographically distributed virtual learning groups to consider ethical issues in software engineering. This paper reflects the longitudinal evaluation of teaching and assessment methods that have been developed over 20 years. ©2010 IEEE.

In order to select a small subset of informative genes from gene expression data for cancer classification, recently, many researchers are analyzing gene expression data using various computational intelligence methods. However, due to the small number of samples compared to the huge number of genes (high-dimension), irrelevant genes, and noisy genes, many of the computational methods face difficulties to select the small subset. Thus, we propose an enhancement of binary particle swarm optimization to select a small subset of informative genes that is relevant for classifying cancer samples more accurately. In this proposed method, three approaches have been introduced to increase the probability of bits in particle's positions to be zero. By performing experiments on two gene expression data sets, we have found that the performance of the proposed method is superior to previous related works, including the conventional version of binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO) in terms of classification accuracy and the number of selected genes. The proposed method also produces lower running times compared to BPSO. © 2010 ISAROB.

Microarrays technology offers the ability to measure the expression levels of thousands of genes simultaneously in biological organisms. Gene expression data that produced by the technology are expected to be of significant help in the development of efficient cancer diagnoses and classification platforms. The main problem that needs to be addressed is the selection of a small subset of genes from the thousands of genes in the data that contributes to a cancer disease. Therefore, this article proposes particle swarm optimization (PSO) with the constraint of particle's velocities to select a near-optimal (small) subset of informative genes that is relevant for cancer classification. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated by two well-known gene expression data sets and obtained encouraging results as compared with the standard version of binary PSO. © 2010 ISAROB.

One of the prominent principles of designing services is the matter of how abstract services should be i.e. granularity. Since service-oriented analysis and design methods lack on providing a quantitative model for service granularity level evaluation, identification of optimally granular services is the key challenge in service-oriented solution development. This article through a systematic process proposes a model namely Weighted Granularity Level Appropriateness (WGLA) which leverages and consolidates four metrics to constitute quantitative basis for granularity appropriateness analysis. These metrics are, indeed, the four quantified attributes of service granularity including business value, reusability, context-independency, and complexity. Our preliminary controlled experiment confirms the correctness of the quantitative model. In fact, by adopting WGLA metric, service granularity appropriateness analysis could be conduct quantitatively that leads to realize an optimized service-oriented solution in terms of its granularity. © 2010 IEEE.

In this research, we have extended the use of Kernel Dimensionality Reduction (KDR) in the context of semi supervised learning in particular for micro-array DNA clustering application. We have proposed a new model call K-means-KDR for survival analysis which we aimed to improve the genes classification performance and study the dimension of effective subspaces in cancer patient survival analysis. KDR method was extended and combined with the K-means clustering technique, Cox's proportional hazards regression model and log rank test where KDR contributes in gene classification to determine subgroups from the patient's group. Results from the experiments have indicated that our model has outperformed Support Vector Machines (SVM) in gene classification. We also observed that the best value for dimension of effective subspaces (K) for microarray DNA data is between 10%-20% of the total patients. © 2010 IEEE.

A growing body of empirical research has examined large, successful open source software projects such as the Linux kernel, Apache web server, and Mozilla web browser. Do these results extend to small open source efforts involving a handful of developers? A study of the OpenEMR open source electronic medical record project was conducted, with the goal of understanding how requirements are elicited, documented, agreed, and validated in a small open source software project The results show that the majority of features are asserted by developers, based on either their personal experience, or knowledge of users' needs. Relatively few were requested directly by users. Validation and documentation took the form of informal discussions via the project's developer mailing list. These results are consistent with an earlier study of the Firefox web browser, suggesting that there is a common open source requirements approach that is independent of project size. © 2010 ACM.

In this paper, we propose a taxonomy that characterizes and classifies different components of autonomic application management in Grids. An important step towards seamless heterogeneous systems is the integration between WLAN and 3G cellular systems. Their interoperability has been frequently discussed in literature, however, there is still room for research in this issue. Since IEEE 802.11 networks reach relatively high data transmission rates when compared to other wireless networks, it has gained the attention of the cellular networks operators, such as UMTS operators, which have been considering IEEE 802.11 networks as a complement to their access networks. Notwithstanding, specification and development of real-time systems with mobility support are still a challenge due to their characteristic of criticality and safety. In this context, formal methods have shown effectiveness in real-time system development. The main advantage of formal methods is allowing a rigorous and nonambiguous system description. Thus, this work presents the specification and validation of two mobility management approaches to integrate UMTS and IEEE 802.11 networks: the first one is based on SIP, and the other one is based on MIP version 6. These specifications extend the Loose Interworking architecture and reach the fourth integration level of the 3GPP specification. These approaches are modeled using SDL and MSC formal description techniques, which are largely used to specify telecommunications systems. SDL also provides simulation and validation results that are analyzed to evaluate the proposed approaches with the goal of proving that formal methods can lead to a more precise and correct final system. © 2009 IEEE.
