In an ad-hoc network, each node does routing autonomously and the starting node does not know the address of the target node. We present in this paper a preliminary evaluation of a target node discovery method in an ad-hoc network based on received signal counts, and we identify some problems with this method. The effectiveness of the proposed method is shown by comparing the number of hops to reach the target node required by a system using this method with that required by a random flooding method.

Although Web services are generally envisioned as being stateless, some of them are implicitly stateful. The reason is that the Web services often work as front-ends to enterprise systems and are used in a session-oriented way by the clients. Contrary to the case of stateless services, for a stateful Web service there exist constraints to the order in which the operations of the service may be invoked. However, specification of such constraints is not a standard part of a Web service interface, and compliance with such constraints is not checked by the standard Web service development tools. Therefore, we propose in this paper to extend a web service interface by a constraint definition that is based on behavior protocols. Also, we implemented a tool that checks whether a given BPEL code complies with the constraints of all stateful web services it communicates with. The key idea behind the tool is to translate the BPEL code into Java and then to check the Java program using Java PathFinder with behavior protocol extension.

IEEE 802.11e standard is developed for QoS provisioning in WLANs. Admission Control is a mechanism that controls stations to be served in WLANs. In practice, evaluation of admission control plays an important role for QoS support. The goal of this paper is to calculate the WLAN delays with ACs. The delay calculation can be used to guarantee the QoS of the VoIP and video streams, which is divided into three parts. One is the propagation delay. Another is that packets queue up in stations or APs. Lastly, the delay is taken due to collisions. For VoIP and video streams, the second delay is more important than other two delays. Consequently, we will focus on the calculation of the second delay. Some simulations and numerical results are provided and discussed in detail. Experimental results show that the proposed method is more accurate in calculating the delay of packets in WLANs.

This paper is concerned with prototype development and motion control of a dolphin-like underwater robot. The propulsion and maneuvering of the robotic dolphin are realized with the flapping motion of the mechanical flippers and the combined heaving and pitching motions of the fluke. Mechanical design and control of the flipper apparatus and the flexible tail mechanism are presented. Through coordinated control of the propulsors, several swimming movements are designed. Preliminary experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed design scheme.

The context of mobility raises many issues for GIS applications. Mobile device limitations, including pen input whilst in motion, result in interfaces which are difficult to navigate and interact with. However, comparatively little research has been conducted to address the interface mobility problem for GIS. We are particularly concerned with the limited interaction techniques available to users of mobile GIS which play a primary role in contributing to the complexity of using such an application whilst mobile. Our research focuses on multimodal interfaces as a means to present users with a wider choice of modalities for interacting with GIS applications. The focus of this paper concerns a comprehensive user study which demonstrates the benefits, in terms of usability and efficiency, of a multimodal interface for the CoMPASS mobile GIS which we have developed.

A system called COLMAS (Coordination Learning in Multi-Agent System) has been developed to investigate how the integration of realistic geosimulation and reinforcement learning might support a decision-maker in the context of cooperative patrolling. COLMAS is a model-driven automated decision support system combining geosimulation and reinforcement learning to compute near optimal solutions. Building upon this hybrid approach, this paper proposes an extended framework to constructively incorporate user preferences providing mixed-initiative generation of further trusted and validated solutions. The proposed approach integrates the user's preferences in COLMAS by automatically extracting user's preferred solution.

Target tracking and localization are important applications in camera sensor networks. Although coverage is a very important research topic in wireless sensor networks, and the coverage problem for target detection has been intensively studied, few considers the coverage problem from the perspective of target localization. In this paper, we investigate the coverage problem from the perspective of target localization for camera sensor networks. We first propose a novel localization-oriented sensing model based on the perspective projection of camera. Then, we propose a new notion of localization-oriented coverage (L-coverage for short). We assume that all camera sensors make the measurements independent of other in the field, and these camera sensors can cooperate to make an accurate estimation for the location of the target. In addition, the relationships among L-coverage, 2-coverage, and the density of camera sensors are also discussed in this paper. The obtained results show that our model can be effectively deployed in many practical scenarios.
