This paper describes the design of an outdoor Distributed Mixed Reality (DMR) system to support multi-user interaction of multi-users and virtual object manipulations in a construction simulation. The proposed DMR system is based on an interactive animation system of operating virtual cranes and extends previous work in a significant manner by considering engineering constraints. Our design integrates a Head-Mounted Display, a GPS receiver, a 3D motion sensor, and a portable computer to carry out a construction simulation which can be run in the outdoors. We describe and evaluate the system design challenges and possible solutions for simulating multi-user collaborative construction activities within the DMR environment. Several issues related to tracking and registration, modeling, user interaction, and mobile networking are discussed. The proposed system prototype is demonstrated using a case study which simulates the deck rehabilitation project of a bridge. Using this system, two users can collaborate to replace a section of the bridge deck by operating two virtual cranes and communicating with each other. © 2007 American Society of Civil Engineers.

A combination of closed sequential pattern mining and closed itemset pattern mining was proposed to mine closed multidimensional sequential patterns. There are two ways for this combination; (1) mining closed itemset patterns from multidimensional information followed by mining closed sequential patterns from sequences associated with closed itemset patterns, and (2) mining closed sequential patterns from sequences followed by mining closed itemset patterns from multidimensional information associated with closed sequential patterns. In the first way the major cost is mining all sequences associated with closed itemset patterns. A similar problem occurs with the second way, the major cost is mining all multidimensional information associated with closed sequential patterns. Therefore, this paper proposes two new combinations that don't need to mine all sequences in the first combination, and all multidimensional information in the second combination. Both combinations can be effected by exploiting two concepts. In the first combination, any closed sequential patterns associated with a closed itemset patten I can be found from a set of closed sequential patterns associated with a closed itemset pattern I' if I sup I'. In the second combination, any closed itemset patterns associated with a closed sequential pattern s can be found from a set of closed sequential patterns associated with a closed itemset pattern s' if s sup s'.

This paper describes a fully automated technique for detection and categorization of the seven basic facial expressions using Support Vector Machines (SVM). Facial expressions are communicated by subtle changes in one or more discrete features such as tightening the lips, raising the eyebrows, opening and closing of eyes or certain combinations of them, which can be identified through monitoring the changes in muscles movements (Action Units), located near about the regions of mouth, eyes and eyebrows. An analytic representation of face with fifteen feature points has been used that represent and identify the principle muscle actions as well as provide measurements of the discrete features responsible for each of the seven basic human emotions. Detection of these fifteen points of interest from the regions of eyes, eyebrows nose and mouth have been performed applying a standard image processing based multi-detector approach for facial feature point localization. The feature vector composed of fifteen features is then obtained by calculating the degree of displacement of five different pairs of points, and measuring the deviations of ten points from a non-changeable rigid point. Finally, obtained feature sets are used to train a SVM classifier so that it can categorize facial expressions when given to it in the form of a feature set. The developed automated facial expressions categorization system has been tested extensively on two publicly available facial expression databases and 91.30% and 84.07% of average successful categorization rate have been achieved. Service-oriented architectures provide integration of interoperability for independent and loosely coupled services. Web services and the associated new standards such as WSRF are frequently used to realise such service-oriented architectures. In such systems, autonomic principles of self-configuration, self-optimisation, self-healing and self- adapting are desirable to ease management and improve robustness. In this paper we focus on the extension of the self management and autonomic behaviour of a WSRF container connected by a structured P2P overlay network to monitor and rectify its QoS to satisfy its SIAs. The SLA plays an important role during two distinct phases in the life-cycle of a WSRF container. Firstly during service deployment when services are assigned to containers in such a way as to minimise the threat of SLA violations, and secondly during maintenance when violations are detected and services are migrated to other containers to preserve QoS. In addition, as the architecture has been designed and built using standardised modern technologies and with high levels of transparency, conventional Web services can be deployed with the addition of a SLA specification.

This paper will study and evaluate watermarking technique by Zain and Fauzi [1]. Recommendations will then be made to enhance the technique especially in the aspect of recovery or reconstruction rate for medical images. A proposal will also be made for a better distribution of watermark to minimize the distortion of the Region of Interest (ROI). The final proposal will enhance AW-TDR in three aspects;firstly the image quality in the ROI will be improved as the maximum change is only 2 bits in every 4 pixels, or embedding rate of 0.5bits/pixel. Secondly the recovery rate will also be better since the recovery bits are located outside the region of interest. The disadvantage in this is that, only manipulation done in the ROI will be detected. Thirdly the quality of the reconstructed image will be enhanced since the average of 2×2 pixels would be used to reconstruct the tampered image.

In this paper, we propose a new hybrid case based reasoning system based on rough set theory, formal concept analysis and fuzzy sets. This system applies rough set theory to assure minimally sufficient cases in its case base. It uses formal concept analysis to reveal knowledge of attribute dependencies in terms of concept lattices. Numeric attributes are transformed to be suitable for formal concept analysis using fuzzy sets.

Given the requirement for software engineering graduates to operate in Global software Development (GSD) environments, educators need to develop teaching methods to enhance and instill GSD knowledge in their students. In this paper, we discuss two projects that provided students with a first-hand learning experience of working within GSD teams. One project was with Siemens Corporate Research, whose focus was to shadow the development of a real-life GSD project. The second project, whose focus was virtual team software testing, was carried out in collaboration with Ball State University. In parallel with these projects we undertook qualitative research during which we analyzed students' own written reflections and face-to-face interviews that focused on their learning experiences in these contexts. We identified three specific forms of learning which had taken place: pedagogical, pragmatic and the acquisition of specific globally distributed knowledge. Our findings confirm that mimicking real work settings has educational benefits for problem-based learning environments.

Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) have been substantially improved in recent past. However, network attacks have become more sophisticated and increasingly complex: many of current attacks are coordinated and originated in multiple networks. To detect these attacks, IDSs need to obtain information on network events from multiple networks or administrative domains. This work demonstrates that a Distributed IDS (DIDS) can be composed of existing IDSs, improving the detection of misuses in a multiple network environment. We use a grid middleware for creating a service-based intrusion detection grid. We demonstrate through experimental results that the proposed DIDS allows the integration of heterogeneous existing IDSs and improves the detection of attacks by exploring the synergy between existing IDSs.

Model-based approaches have proven fruitful in the design and implementation of intelligent systems that provide automated diagnostic functions. A wide variety of models are used in these approaches to represent the particular domain knowledge, including analytic state-based models, input-output transfer function models, fault propagation models, and qualitative and quantitative physics-based models. Diagnostic applications are built around three main steps: observation, comparison, and diagnosis. If the modeling begins in the early stages of system development, engineering models such as fault propagation models can be used for testability analysis to aid definition and evaluation of instrumentation suites for observation of system behavior. Analytical models can be used in the design of monitoring algorithms that process observations to provide information for the second step in the process, comparison of expected behavior of the system to actual measured behavior. In the final diagnostic step, reasoning about the results of the comparison can be performed in a variety of ways, such as dependency matrices, graph propagation, constraint propagation, and state estimation. Realistic empirical evaluation and comparison of these approaches is often hampered by a lack of standard data sets and suitable testbeds. In this paper we describe the Advanced Diagnostics and Prognostics Testbed (ADAPT) at NASA Ames Research Center. The purpose of the testbed is to measure, evaluate, and mature diagnostic and prognostic health management technologies. This paper describes the testbed's hardware, software architecture, and concept of operations. A simulation testbed that accompanies ADAPT, and some of the diagnostic and decision support approaches being investigated are also discussed.
