Embedded digital signal processors for software defined radio have stringent design constraints including high computational bandwidth, low power consumption, and low interrupt latency. Furthermore, due to rapidly evolving communication standards with increasing code complexity, these processors must be compiler-friendly, so that code for them can quickly be developed in a high-level language. In this paper, we present the design of the Sandblaster Processor, a low-power multithreaded digital signal processor for software defined radio. The processor uses a unique combination of token triggered threading, powerful compound instructions, and SIMD vector operations to provide real-time baseband processing capabilities with very low power consumption. We describe the processor's architecture and microarchitecture, along with various techniques for achieving high performance and low power dissipation. We also describe the processor's programming environment and the SB3010 platform, a complete system-on-chip solution for software defined radio. Using a super-computer class vectorizing compiler, the SB3010 achieves real-time performance in software on a variety of communication protocols including 802.11b, GPS, AM/FM radio, Bluetooth, GPRS, and WCDMA. In addition to providing a programmable platform for SDR, the processor also provides efficient support for a wide variety of digital signal processing and multimedia applications. © 2006 Springer Science + Business Media, LLC.

In the automotive field, software development methods and tools are used to cope with the high complexity of automotive software development. However, problems occur with the tracing of information, the assessment and monitoring of the development status, late and thus expensive changes, etc, which lead to increasing development costs and time as well as quality deficits. Our experience with recent projects have shown that the key to solving these problems lies in providing proper answers to the following questions: (1) How can development methods be assembled? (2) How can the use of a variety of development methods be supported by an appropriate tool? To answer these questions, we introduce a tool integration approach that is strongly based on the integration of development methods. The contribution of this paper is (a) a method integration approach that considers fine-grained method objects and their specific structure in addition to the usually considered artifacts, (b) an approach to tool integration that overcomes the deficits of heterogeneous tool environments and utilizes the results of the methodical understanding. This paper presents technical foundation, roadmap and initial results of the IDIOM project (Information Diffusion across Interactive Online Media). Information spreads rapidly across Web sites, Web logs and online forums. IDIOM tracks this process and compares it to direct communication through electronic mail and instant messaging. Linguists define "idiom" as an expression whose meaning is different from the literal meanings of its component words. Similarly, the study of information diffusion promises insights that cannot be inferred from individual network elements. Similar projects often focus on particular media, or neglect important aspects of the human language. IDIOM addresses these gaps to reveal fundamental mechanisms of information diffusion across media with distinct interactive characteristics. © 2006 IEEE.

Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks on the Internet have become an immediate problem. As DDoS streams do not have common characteristics, currently available intrusion detection systems (IDS) cannot detect them accurately. As a result, defend DDoS attacks based on current available IDS will dramatically affect legitimate traffic. In this paper, we propose a distributed approach to defend against distributed denial of service attacks by coordinating across the Internet. Unlike traditional IDS, we detect and stop DDoS attacks within the intermediate network. In the proposed approach, DDoS defence systems are deployed in the network to detect DDoS attacks independently. A gossip based communication mechanism is used to exchange information about network attacks between these independent detection nodes to aggregate information about the overall network attacks observed. Using the aggregated information, the individual defence nodes have approximate information about global network attacks and can stop them more effectively and accurately. To provide reliable, rapid and widespread dissemination of attack information, the system is built as a peer to peer overlay network on top of the internet. Analysis and design by contract allows the definition of a formal agreement between a class and its clients, expressing each party's rights and obligations. Contracts written in the Object Constraint Language (OCL) are known to be a useful technique to specify the precondition and postcondition of operations and class invariants in a UML context, making the definition of object-oriented analysis or design elements more precise while also helping in testing and debugging. In this article, we report on the experiences with the development of ocl2j, a tool that automatically instruments OCL constraints in Java programs using aspect-oriented programming (AOP). The approach strives for automatic and efficient generation of contract code, and a non-intrusive instrumentation technique. A summary of our approach is given along with the results of an initial case study, the discussion of encountered problems, and the necessary future work to resolve the encountered issues. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

computer Supported Collaborative Learning activities involve combination of complex software tools that often need to interoperate in a wider context of learning. This paper proposes a data model that accommodates requirements of typical collaborative learning situations and facilitates interoperability of tools and interchange of products of collaboration and evaluation data. The model has been tested against various typical tools used for both synchronous and asynchronous collaboration of groups of students. © 2006 IEEE.

Ontology is recognized as a key technology for the success of the semantic Web. Building reusable and evolve-able ontologies in order to cope with ontology evolution and requirement changes is increasingly important. But the existing methodologies and tools fail to support effective ontology reuse and evolution. In this paper, we present a product line based reuse-oriented ontology development methodology which integrates ontology development with design by reuse and design for reuse. The basic building block in our approach is the meta-ontology. In the first stage, reengineering of existing ontologies will lead to the initial implementation of the meta-onotologies using design by reuse and with the objective of design for reuse. After that step new ontologies could be generated by reusing these meta-ontologies. We demonstrate our approach with a semantic Web Service application to show how to build reusable meta-ontologies with a generic composite process template and generate processes for different example scenarios

Improving the reusability of ontology is recognized as increasingly important due to the prevalence of OWL research and applications. But there exists no convincing methodology and tool support in this direction yet. In this paper, we apply ideas from the research and practice with software product lines in order to explore this issue. The ontology is developed and managed according to the commonalities and variabilities underlying a specific problem domain. Meta-ontology is used in order to improve the reusability, evolve-ability and customizability of ontology. Another advantage is being able to generate needed ontology with the created meta-ontology implemented with XVCL (XML based variant configuration language) technology. We demonstrate our product line based reuse approach with an example B2C application

In the service-oriented software environment, interactions between components are highly dependent on the exposed service interfaces. Therefore, designing an appropriate service interface is essential. In this paper, we aim to perform a comparative evaluation on three different approaches to service interface design, i.e. method-centric, message-centric and resource-centric. The evaluation is performed systematically based on a list of selected evaluation criteria. It is expected that the evaluation results may assist software architects to understand the differences between approaches and adopt the approaches wisely in the service interface design.

This paper presents a content-based decentralized information aggregation service for pervasive environments. The service provides a uniform query interface where aggregation queries are specified using content descriptors in the form of keywords, partial keywords, wildcards and ranges. The service guarantees that all data that matches a complex/range query was located and aggregated in an efficient and scalable way. The design of the aggregation service uses a decentralized aggregation trie along with a distributed and decentralized query engine. The deployment and experimental evaluation of the aggregation service are also presented. Evaluations include simulations as well as experiments using deployments on local-area network at Rutgers and wide-area PlanetLab testbed
