Single page applications (SPAs) are web applications that offer a fast and responsive user experience, but also pose some challenges in terms of navigation process management and platform compatibility. In this paper, we propose a DSL-based approach for code generation and management of SPA navigation process, based on the visual vocabulary proposed by Garrett. We use a Domain-Specific Language (DSL) to describe the elements of the SPA, such as pages, connectors, and transitions, in a concise and abstract way. We also propose a metamodel for Garrett vocabulary, which defines the concepts and relationships of the DSL. Then, we apply a Model-Driven engineering (MDE) technique to transform the DSL specification into a platform-specific project architecture and basic code for an SPA. We present a case study of using our DSL to generate an Angular SPA and evaluate the benefits of our approach in terms of productivity, maintainability, and reusability. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.. Social media has become more than just a communication tool;it's now a rapidly evolving platform for sharing information, including cybersecurity threats like XSS attacks. This study investigates if analyzing collections of tweets can identify those containing XSS attack information. By accurately extracting this information, we can effectively classify tweets as containing or not containing XSS attacks. Our research focuses on evaluating how well feature extraction methods perform in achieving this classification accuracy. As the result, the 2-gram model with TF-IDF Vectorizer might be a more suitable choice with accuracy exceeding 97% and demonstrates better tolerance for overfitting due to the inherent properties of TF-IDF. © 2024 IEEE.

End-to-end entity extraction from OCRed texts using summarization models

A novel methodology is introduced for extracting entities from noisy scanned documents by using end-to-end data and reformulating the entity extraction task as a text summarization problem. This approach offers two significant advantages over traditional entity extraction methods while maintaining comparable performance. First, it utilizes preexisting data to construct datasets, thereby eliminating the need for labor-intensive annotation procedures. Second, it employs multitask learning, enabling the training of a model via a single dataset. To evaluate our approach against state-of-the-art methods, we adapted three commonly used datasets, namely, Conference on Natural Language Learning (CoNLL++), few-shot named entity recognition (Few-NERD), and WikiNEuRal domain adaptation (WikiNEuRal + DA), to the format required by our methodology. We subsequently fine-tuned four sequence-to-sequence models: text-to-text transfer transformer (T5), fine-tuned language net T5 (FLAN-T5), bidirectional autoregressive transformer (BART), and pretraining with extracted gap sentences for abstractive summarization sequence-to-sequence models (PEGASUS). The results indicate that, in the absence of optical character recognition (OCR) noise, the BART model performs comparably to state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, the performance degradation was limited to 3.49–5.23% when 39–62% of the sentences contained OCR noise. This performance is significantly superior to that of previous studies, which reported a 10–20% decrease in the F1 score with texts that had a 20% OCR error rate. Our experimental results demonstrate that a single model trained via our methodology can reliably extract entities from noisy OCRed texts, unlike existing state-of-the-art approaches, which require separate models for correcting OCR errors and extracting entities. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Personas, a user characterisation, have been widely used in requirements engineering (RE) to enhance the understanding of end-users and their needs. However, the persona generation process is time-consuming and demands familiarity with a user-centered approach. The central issue lies in existing tools for automatically generating personas, which are restricted to generating persona templates and provide limited user control to tailor personas according to their specific needs. This paper introduces CRAFTER, a persona generation tool that uses Large Language Models (GPT-3.5 model). This tool not only automates persona creation but also offers recommendations to users for generating personas tailored to their requirements. The study involved an online questionnaire with 19 respondents who utilised the tool, providing feedback that indicated the tool’s sufficiency for persona generation while identifying areas for improvement. Beyond its primary function, CRAFTER stands out by providing guidance to requirements engineers throughout the persona creation process. The tool grants users the flexibility to customise personas based on their specific requirements, acknowledging the crucial human subjectivity in persona development. Additionally, CRAFTER promotes persona reusability, allowing users to save and reuse generated personas for future projects. © 2024 by SCITEPRESS – Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

KDTL: knowledge-distilled transfer learning framework for diagnosing mental disorders using EEG spectrograms

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a well-known modality in neuroscience and is widely used in identifying and classifying neurological disorders. This paper investigates how EEG data can be used along with knowledge distillation-based deep learning models to detect mental disorders like epilepsy and sleep disorders. The EEG signals are converted into time–frequency plots using short-time Fourier transforms. Further, we propose a novel methodology for using knowledge distillation-based transfer learning (KDTL). Knowledge distillation is becoming quite prevalent in the machine learning field and is associated with various applications in our work;we propose its use in the detection of mental disorders from EEG spectrograms. We convert the EEGs using short-term Fourier transform to obtain time–frequency representation and apply teacher-student by first training a large teacher model and use knowledge distillation to train a student model. In our experiments, we found that ConvNext teacher and MobileNet student combination obtained better results. Our proposed KDTL approach is tested on two datasets with multiple cases, namely the Bonn and ISRUC datasets and obtain 98% and 95% accuracies, respectively. Further experimental results show that the overall KDTL methodology can obtain high classification accuracy across both datasets in binary and multiclass classifications and proves to be better than multiple prior works. Further, our KDTL approach provides a way to train lightweight models which have a smaller number of trainable parameters and thereby constitute lower training time overall. Our proposed KDTL-based approach obtained accurate results in diagnosing mental disorders from EEG spectrograms. Compared to other related methods, KDTL outperformed across tasks with obtained good results in both binary and multiclass classifications. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Modern programming languages, such as Java, use exception-handling mechanisms to guarantee the robustness of software systems. Although important, the quality of exception code is usually poor and neglected by developers. Indiscriminate robustness changes (e.g., the addition of empty catch blocks) can indicate design decisions that negatively impact the internal quality of software systems. As it is known in the literature, multiple occurrences of poor code structures, namely code smells, are strong indicators of design problems. Still, existing studies focus mainly on the correlation of maintainability smells with design problems. However, using only these smells may not be enough since developers need more context (e.g., system domain) to identify the problems in certain scenarios. Moreover, these studies do not explore how changes in the exceptional code of the methods combined with maintainability smells can give complementary evidence of design problems. By covering both regular and exception codes, the developer can have more context about the system and find complementary code smells that reinforce the presence of design problems. This work aims to leverage the identification of design problems by tracking poor robustness changes combined with maintainability smells. We investigated the correlation between robustness changes and maintainability smells on the commit history of more than 160k methods from different releases of 10 open-source software systems. We observed that maintainability smells can be worsened or even introduced when robustness changes are performed. This scenario mainly happened for the smells Feature Envy, Long Method, and Dispersed Coupling. We also analyzed the co-occurrence between robustness and maintainability smells. We identified that the empty catch block and catch throwable robustness smells were the ones that co-occurred the most with maintainability smells related to the Concern Overload and Misplaced Concern design problems.
