The First International Conference in systems and Network Medicine gathered together 200 global thought leaders, scientists, clinicians, academicians, industry and government experts, medical and graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and policymakers. Held at Georgetown University Conference Center in Washington D.C. on September 11-13, 2019, the event featured a day of pre-conference lectures and hands-on bioinformatic computational workshops followed by two days of deep and diverse scientific talks, panel discussions with eminent thought leaders, and scientific poster presentations. Topics ranged from: systems and Network Medicine in Clinical Practice;the role of -omics technologies in Health Care;the role of Education and Ethics in Clinical Practice, systems Thinking, and Rare Diseases;and the role of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine. The use of Deep Learning (DL) algorithms is increasingly evolving in many application domains. Despite the rapid growing of algorithm size and complexity, performing DL inference at the edge is becoming a clear trend to cope with low latency, privacy and bandwidth constraints. Nevertheless, traditional implementation on low-energy computing nodes often requires experience-based manual intervention and trial-and-error iterations to get to a functional and effective solution. This work presents a computer-aided design (CAD) support for effective implementation of DL algorithms on embedded systems, aiming at automating different design steps and reducing cost. The proposed tool flow comprises capabilities to consider architecture-and hardware-related variables at very early stages of the development process, from pre-training hyperparameter optimization and algorithm configuration to deployment, and to adequately address security, power efficiency and adaptivity requirements. This paper also presents some preliminary results obtained by the first implementation of the optimization techniques supported by the tool flow.

Modeling of system properties deals with formally expressing constraints and requirements that influence and determine the structure and behavior of a system. System Property Models enable the verification of system properties through real or simulated experiments so as to support their evaluation during system design and their monitoring during system operation. However, several challenges should be addressed to effectively handle systems properties with the support of an integrated tool-chain. In this context, the paper presents the concrete experimentation of a promising solution that enables the formal modeling of requirements in Modelica and their subsequent simulation-based verification. The solution is applied to evaluate different design variants of a trailing-edge high-lift system. In particular, two ways to feed the requirements model are explored: in an early phase, data series are used to evaluate the requirements themselves; then a co-simulation of the requirements model with the 3D-model of the system is used to evaluate and identify what design variants best meet the system requirements.

We consider the symbolic controller synthesis approach to enforce safety specifications on perturbed, nonlinear control systems. In general, in each state of the system several control values might be applicable to enforce the safety requirement and in the implementation one has the burden of picking a particular control value out of possibly many. We present a class of implementation strategies to obtain a controller with certain performance guarantees. This class includes two existing implementation strategies from the literature, based on discounted payoff and mean-payoff games. We unify both approaches by using games characterized by a single discount factor determining the implementation. We evaluate different implementations from our class experimentally on two case studies. We show that the choice of the discount factor has a significant influence on the average long-term costs, and the best performance guarantee for the symbolic model does not result in the best implementation. Comparing the optimal choice of the discount factor here with the previously proposed values, the costs differ by a factor of up to 50. Our approach therefore yields a method to choose systematically a good implementation for safety controllers with quantitative objectives. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

While any simulation study starts with a scenario, scenario development is usually conducted in an unstructured and ad hoc manner. In order to streamline scenario development, a formal approach is envisioned in the research flight simulator facility of German Aerospace Center (DLR), namely Air Vehicle Simulator (AVES). System Entity Structure (SES) which is a high level ontology that was introduced to specify a set of system structures and parameter settings is proposed as the foundations. The paper outlines a model-based methodology for scenario development. SES is exploited for metamodeling in order to capture all possible elements of a scenario that can be simulated in AVES. As a result of the rapid increase of online shopping, and the movement of products in and out among various countries, governments made it mandatory to pay a certain fee referred to as customs to maintain each country's economy, based on some rules i.e. weight and price. This paper proposes a model to anticipate and inform the customer if his order is going to be subject to customs or not based on some pre-defined rules. The model is built using a software called SPSS and data mining techniques such as; Decision Tree (DT) and logistic regression. A comparison between the two data mining techniques is made showing that the DT results were better than the logistic regression in terms of accuracy, precision, recall and f-score.

This work presents a diagnosis method for detecting track circuits failures on a railway traffic line equipped with an Automatic Block Signalling installation. The diagnosis method uses the installation's electrical schemas, based on which a series of diagnosis charts have been created. Further, the diagnosis charts were used to develop a software package, CDCBla, which substantially contributes to reducing the diagnosis time and human error during failure remedies. The proposed method can also be used as a training package for the maintenance staff. Since the diagnosis method here does not need signal or measurement inputs, using it does not necessitate additional IT knowledge and can be deployed on a mobile computing device (tablet, smart phone).

This work presents a diagnosis method for railway traffic security installations. More specifically, the authors present a series of diagnosis charts for passing signals on a railway block equipped with an automatic block signaling installation. These charts are based on the exploitation electric schemes, and are subsequently used to develop a diagnosis software package. The thus developed software package contributes substantially to a reduction of failure detection and remedy for these types of installation faults. The use of the software package eliminates making wrong decisions in the fault detection process, decisions that may result in longer remedy times and, sometimes, to railway traffic events.

For authenticating time critical broadcast messages, IEEE 1609.2 security standard for Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) suggests the use of secure Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA). Since ECDSA has an expensive verification in terms of time, most commonly suggested alternate algorithms are TESLA and signature amortization. Unfortunately, these algorithms lack immediate authentication and non-repudiation. Therefore, we introduce a probabilistic verification scheme for an ECDSA-based authentication protocol. Using ns2 simulation tools, we compare the performance of all above-mentioned broadcast authentication algorithms. The results show with our proposed scheme, there is an increase in packet processed ratio over that of all the other algorithms. © 2016 ACM.
