Developing neuro-inspired computing paradigms that mimic nervous system function is an emerging field of research that fosters our model understanding of the biological system and targets technical applications in artificial systems. The computational power of simulated brain circuits makes them a very promising tool for the development for brain-controlled robots. Early phases of robotic controllers development make extensive use of simulators as they are easy, fast and cheap tools. In order to develop robotics controllers that encompass brain models, a tool that include both neural simulation and physics simulation is missing. Such a tool would require the capability of orchestrating and synchronizing both simulations as well as managing the exchange of data between them. The Neurorobotics Platform (NRP) aims at filling this gap through an integrated software toolkit enabling an experimenter to design and execute a virtual experiment with a simulated robot using customized brain models. As a use case for the NRP, the iCub robot has been integrated into the platform and connected to a spiking neural network. In particular, experiments of visual tracking have been conducted in order to demonstrate the potentiality of such a platform.

In the early phases, software engineers use whiteboards and flip charts to create and discuss their ideas and later they transform manually the hand drawn pictures into machine readable models. During this transformation important sketch information, like the history of origin or some elements, will be lost. To solve this problem, we present a new approach using digital whiteboards to elaborate in a creative and collaborative environment hand drawn pictures and transform them into domain specific models and vice versa. This poster outlines the process of the automatic transformation from sketch models to models based on well-defined notations and vice versa in the early creative phases of software development. © 2014, Australian Computer Society, Inc.

This work presents a method to determine rotor oscillations during a three-phased sudden short-circuit test of a synchronous generator. To our best current knowledge, no such similar method is yet published in the technical literature. During the periodic and non-periodic component separation of the three phase currents, it was found that the time difference between the currents' extreme values, for any of the three phase currents, does not have a 10 ms constant value, as in the stationary phase. Investigating why this happens we found that these variations are caused by the rotor oscillations. Certain parameters of a synchronous generator's rotor and of the rotor's oscillations are measured during the sudden three-phased short-circuit test. Based on these readings, with the method presented in this paper, we can compute the rotor's mechanical oscillation amplitudes and the transient process durations. Using the measured values, the equation describing the rotor's mechanical oscillations, independent of its power, can be re-written. Knowledge of the oscillation amplitudes and their durations is necessary for a correct loop control design and in establishing the generator's performance. © 2014 IEEE.

We present in this paper a software module for the diagnosis of Automatic Bloc Signaling installation failures in situations where the train open line figures as blocked, although it is, in reality, free. The software module created by us, LCOBla, is designed for the use of maintenance staff specialized in Signals, Centralizations, Blocking (SCB) at the Romanian Railroad Company (CFR). LCOBla allows a quick and correct design of the failure causes associated with these kinds of signaling and contributes to the maintenance staff performance. Fast failure remedy improves train traffic flow and reduces train delay times. The LCOBla software module uses the diagnosis chart created for these kinds of failures, which, in turn, is based on the actual block schemes and on technical recommendations for these types of installations. The module is one of a series of modules designed to diagnose each failure type, for the various railway traffic safety installation types. © 2014 IEEE.

The paper considers Computer-Aided Design (CAD) system FORTU-FEM, which mathematical base is the Finite-Element Method (FEM). Unlike other CAD systems, which does not allow to their users to change the schema of calculation, FORTU-FEM has an open architecture and allows to engineers to develop various methods for design and analysis of non-standard mechanical constructions. Applications of FORTU-FEM for design of non-standard constructions from elastomers, calculation of the tensional and the deformed states of such the constructions are considered.

In order to select the components for a technical system, a detailed description of the systems features is necessary. For this purpose feature-trees are currently preferred. By selecting features from these feature-trees the corresponding components are chosen. Within the development process it is also useful to describe the functions of the technical system as well and to associate these functions with the components. For this functional-networks are used so far, which describe the dependencies between the different functions. But feature-trees and functional-networks are considered separately and not associated with the components within one model. For this reason, the features and functions of a system are usually chosen in advance. So there are two independent ways to choose components for one product. By evolution and reusing of existing components it is possible to create systems with new features or functions. If it would be possible to describe feature, functions and components within one language, proposals for new components could be made. In this paper an approach for describing features, functions and components with one language is introduced.

Information systems supporting flexible business in small-to-medium enterprises must be easily modifiable under the supervision of their users. The users (business people) must take active part in agile system development and maintenance. The systems must be able to integrate large legacy systems and to communicate with the systems of independent business partners. Business processes need not be executed by a single ERP. We discuss a variant of SOA able to meet these requirements. The discussed SOA uses communication protocols based on problem-oriented languages. We propose a concept of organizational (architectural) services generalizing the concept of connectors and routers. The power and usefulness of the proposal is demonstrated on the examples of service composition, business-oriented interfaces, agile business processes, portals, and gateways. The proposal is based on experience from practical SOA projects.

In train traffic, traffic security installations failure recovery is time consuming, causing time delays the the railroad traffic. Automatic Block Signal Installations (ABS) are on type of installations that ensure railroad traffic security. To decrease the failure diagnosis and remedy times for ABS Installations in cases where the installations do not regularly invert, we defined a set of diagnosis charts. Based on these charts we devised a diagnosis software tool, called INVBla, which can be used by the technical maintenance staff on both mobile devices (tablet, smart phone) and PCs. The use of the INVBla diagnosis tool is a fast and secure tool that assists the maintenance staff in determining the failures in ABS regular inversion, triggered by dispatch commands, for a unified ABS installation depending on an Electrodynamic Centralized Traffic Control Station of type 4 (CED-CR4).

A recent development of heterogeneous platforms (i.e. those containing different types of computational units such as multicore CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs) has enabled significant improvements in performance for real-time data processing. This potential, however, is still not fully utilized due to the lack of methods for optimal configuration of software;the allocation of different software components to different computational unit types is crucial for getting the maximal utilization of the platform, but for more complex systems it is difficult to find ad-hoc a good enough or the best configuration. With respect to system and user defined constraints, in this paper we are applying analytical hierarchical process and a genetic algorithm to find feasible, locally optimal solution for allocating software components to computational units.
