Reference architecture can help in enterprise architecture management to develop and operate standardized and maintainable software landscapes. Similar to the software architectures of single systems, however, they are threatened by architecture erosion, i.e. the continuous divergence between intended architectures and their actual realizations. Architecture erosion has negative effects on the maintainability of software systems and on other quality attributes. In this paper, we report on the application of a rule-based architecture conformance checking approach in an industrial case study in which we investigate an industrial reference architecture for the German public administration. The reference architecture and its constraints for implementations are formalized as architecture rules enabling automatic conformance checking tool support. The results from the case study show that the approach is capable of checking reference architecture conformance in realistic settings and helps to avoid software architecture erosion. © 2013 IEEE.

Recently software crowdsourcing has become an emerging area of software engineering. Few papers have pre- sented a systematic analysis on the practices of software crowdsourcing. This paper first presents an evaluation frame- work to evaluate software crowdsourcing projects with re- spect to software quality, costs, diversity of solutions, and competition nature in crowdsourcing. Specifically, competi- tions are evaluated by the min-max relationship from game theory among participants where one party tries to minimize an objective function while the other party tries to maximize the same objective function. The paper then defines a game theory model to analyze the primary factors in these min- max competition rules that affect the nature of participation as well as the software quality. Finally, using the proposed eval- uation framework, this paper illustrates two crowdsourcing processes, Harvard-TopCoder and AppStori. The framework demonstrates the sharp contrasts between both crowdsourc- ing processes as participants will have drastic behaviors in engaging these two projects.

The increasing globalization in the automotive industry creates worldwide new target groups. Because of that, regional-specific requirements have to be considered in the vehicle development process. This increases the complexity in conception of the vehicle's design. In order to create vehicles economically the depth of production must not go up disproportionately. To develop systematically various factors in the vicinity of a vehicle and further to demonstrate them, in relation to the technical characteristics of a vehicle concept, a model was created in the early stages of the developing process. Finally the characteristics will be clustered to so-called 'prototypes', which also summarize required similar characteristics from the customer. In this case the prototypes represent a compromise between the large numbers of regional-specific alternatives and less economical ones. © Springer-Verlag London 2013.

A well-structured, modular software architecture is known to support comprehensibility, maintainability and extensibility of a software system. To achieve this goal the software system is divided into components in such a way that its component structure is optimized regarding cohesion and coupling. But with increasing size and complexity identifying and evaluating a component structure can be rarely accomplished by humans manually. To support this task, we developed an approach using Spectral Clustering from the field of neural computation. Based on the different dependencies between software elements, our approach automatically forms a component structure of the analyzed software system. In a case study we demonstrate this approach on a software system of manually manageable size and complexity. The results are compared to the component structure skilled software architects manually formed. In most cases both variants, manually as well as automated, provide similar component structures. For this reason, the presented approach seems to be suitable for systems which are not manageable by hand.

software Product Line (SPL) development is a new approach to software engineering that aims at the development of a whole range of products. One of the problems which hinders the adoption of that approach is related with the management of the products of the line. Additionally, the scope of a software product line is determined by the bounds of the capabilities provided by the collection of products in the product line. This introduces new challenges related to the scope problem. One of the main three different forms of scoping is the Product Portfolio Scoping (PPS). PPS aims at defining the products that should be developed as well as their key features. While this has an impact on the actual reuse opportunities, it is usually driven from marketing aspects. Defining a product portfolio by considering costumers satisfaction and cost aspects is a NP-hard problem. This work presents a hybrid approach, which combines fuzzy inference systems and the multi-objective metaheuristics NSGA-II to support product management by generating portfolios of products, based in segments of users and the development cost of the assets of the SPL. Fuzzy inference systems are used to generate development cost of an asset by using coupling, number of code lines and cyclomatic complexity and also to estimate the quality of the products generated by the optimization module of our approach. The NSGA-II metaheuristic is used to search for products minimizing the cost and maximizing the relevance of the candidate products. The results show that the proposed approach is effective in proposing the best products in terms of relevance and cost of the assets.

SaaS (software-as-a-Service) often uses multi-tenancy architecture (MTA) where tenant developers compose their applications online using the components stored in the SaaS database. Tenant applications need to be tested, and combinatorial testing can be used. While numerous combinatorial testing techniques are available, most of them produce static sequences of test configurations and their goal is often to provide sufficient coverage such as 2-way interaction coverage. But the goal of SaaS testing is to identify those compositions that are faulty for tenant applications. This paper proposes an adaptive test configuration generation algorithm AR (Adaptive Reasoning) that can rapidly identify those faulty combinations so that those faulty combinations cannot be selected by tenant developers for composition. The AR algorithm has been evaluated by both simulation and real experimentation using a MTA SaaS sample running on GAE (Google App Engine). Both the simulation and experiment showed show that the AR algorithm can identify those faulty combinations rapidly. Whenever a new component is submitted to the SaaS database, the AR algorithm can be applied so that any faulty interactions with new components can be identified to continue to support future tenant applications.

Program comprehension is an essential activity to perform software maintenance and evolution. Comprehensibility often encompasses the analysis of individual logical units, called features, which are often scattered through many program modules. Understanding how the feature code is implemented along the software evolution history is essential, for instance, to perform refactoring activities. However, existing tools do not provide means to comprehend the feature code evolution. To overcome this shortcoming, this paper presents a tool called Source Miner Evolution (SME) that provides multiple interactive and coordinated views to comprehend feature code evolution. SME implements a feature-sensitive comparison of multiple program versions. Our usability assessment with experienced developers indicated that SME allows them to efficiently perform recurring comprehension tasks on evolving feature code. The developers' performance was influenced by the combination of visual SME mechanisms, such as colors, tool tips and menu-popup interactions over the features' code elements.
