The AAAI-10 workshop program was held on July 11-12, 2010, at the Westin Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta, Georgia. The workshop program included 13 workshops covering a wide range of topics in artificial intelligence. There were several presentations on particular formalisms for combining the levels of planning from the perspectives of classical planning, motion planning, POMDPs, search-based planning, and temporal logic-based constraints. Henry Lieberman from Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Laboratory presented work developing a platform for knowledge acquisition and usage from expert users, built upon experience with eliciting information from nonexperts in a collaborative manner. The objective of the AAAI Workshop on Goal-Directed Autonomy (GDA) was to encourage discussion and novel contributions on intelligent agents that can self-select their goals. Jeremy Baxter from QinetiQ focused on user interaction, while Nick Hawes described a goal-directed reasoning framework for controlling a mobile robot.

Moving and resizing desktop windows are frequently performed but largely unexplored interaction tasks. The standard title bar and border dragging techniques used for window manipulation have not changed much over the years. We studied three new methods to move and resize windows. The new methods are based on proxy and goal-crossing techniques to eliminate the need of long cursor movements and acquiring narrow window borders. Instead, moving and resizing actions are performed by manipulating proxy objects close to the cursor and by sweeping cursor motions across window borders. We compared these techniques with the standard techniques. The results indicate that further investigations and redesigns of window manipulation techniques are worthwhile: all new techniques were faster than the standard techniques, with task completion times improving more than 50% in some cases. Also, the new resizing techniques were found to be less error-prone than the traditional click-and-drag method. © ACM 2009.

Modern enterprise application systems are parts of complex IT landscapes. The architecture of such a landscape may impose constraints upon the design of single applications, for example by the mandatory use of enterprise wide reference architectures. It is of great importance for the sake of smooth operation and easy maintaining that single applications are compliant to the reference architectures. Checking this compliance is highly important for the architecture management to assure the quality of application systems. Unfortunately, current tool support is not flexible enough to easily check different aspects of architectural compliance. This paper proposes a rule based approach based upon logic programming concepts towards a formalism for architectural compliance checking. In this approach, the architecture and design are represented as logical knowledge base that can be queried for architectural compliance. Furthermore, the paper presents a case study, in which the approach was prototypically implemented and applied in an industrial context.

Ensuring the correctness of Critical systems (CS) becomes more complex if we consider that their behaviour is the result of the concurrent execution of many components. Furthermore, any automaton-based representation of concurrent components yields an explosion in the number of states, thus limiting the use of Model-Checking (MC) verification techniques in practice. This article presents a compositional verification approach, which is formally supported by state-of-the-art MC tools. To facilitate and guarantee the verification of large CS, the proposed approach integrates MEDISTAM-RT (Spanish acronym of Method for System Design based on Analytic Transformation of Real-Time Models), CCTL temporal logic as the property specification formal language, and the formal language CSP+T, used to formally describe a model of the system to be verified. To show a practical use of the proposed approach, a critical part of a realistic industry project related to mobile phone communications is discussed. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

This paper shows a rigorous approach based on algebraic specifications and rewriting logic which makes up for the lack of current transformation languages and offers a balanced rigour-versus-intuition framework for model transformation, focusing on the MDA-QVT standards. To illustrate this approach, an example and some formal applications of these specifications are sketched.

This report summarizes the proceedings of the one day BioSharing meeting held at the Intelligent systems for Molecular Biology (ISMB) 2010 conference in Boston, MA, USA This inaugural BioSharing event was hosted by the Genomic Standards Consortium as part of its M3 & BioSharing special interest group (SIG) workshop. The BioSharing event included invited talks from a range of community leaders and a panel discussion at the end of the day. The panel session led to the formal agreement among community leaders to join together to promote cross-community knowledge exchange and collaborations. A key focus of the newly formed Biosharing community will be linking up resources to promote real-world data sharing (virtuous cycle of data) and supporting compliance with data policies through the creation of a one-stop-portal of information. In this paper we discuss a specific result derived from a multiple case study. The case study involved implementation of IFPUG Function Point Analysis and COSMIC Functional Size Measurement methods in an innovative military software development project by different groups of experts. Application of these methods in a case that provides a number of size measurement challenges enabled us to observe significant improvement opportunities for the methodologies. In this paper, we depict the utilization of the entity generalization concept in two FSM methods and based on our observations we discuss the effects of different interpretations of the concept for measuring the software functional size. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Most large-scaled software systems are logically structured in subsystems resp. components to cope with complexity. These components are deployed and executed within an distributed system infrastructure. Consequently, for many reasons, like for instance multi-user support or performance issues, the components are to some extent concurrently executed within an distributed environement. This paper presents a case study that describes TSPi teaching (Introduction to the Team software Process) to 4th year students, grouped by teams, at the Computer Science School, Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM). The achievements of the teams, due to training and the use of TSPi, were analyzed and discussed. This paper briefly discusses the approach to the teaching and some of the issues that were identified. The teams collected data on the projects developed. They reviewed the schedule and quality status weekly. The metrics selected to analyze the impact on the students were: size, effort, productivity, costs and defects density. These metrics were chosen to analyze teams' performance evolution through project development. This paper also presents a study related to the evolution of estimation, quality and productivity improvements these teams obtained. This study will prove that training in TSPi has a positive impact on getting better estimations, reducing costs, improving productivity, and decreasing defect density. Finally, the teams 'performance are analyzed. © 2008 IEEE.
