Blockchain rewriting is necessary for modifying illegal or messages included in blockchain transactions, while maintaining the consistency of subsequent blocks in the blockchain. However, arbitrary blockchain rewriting is not desirable as it defeats the purpose of blockchain rewriting. In this work, we propose a new security primitive named message-controlled chameleon hash (MCH) and apply it for message control in blockchain rewriting to ensure that no unspecified messages are generated from blockchain rewriting. The proposed MCH enables permitted parties to select candidate messages from designated message sets for blockchain rewriting at the message level. Our evaluation shows that the proposed MCH can be easily integrated into both permissioned and permissionless blockchains. © 2024 IEEE.

In order to improve the efficiency of financial statement fraud detection, a Support Vector Machine (SVM) model was adopted, combined with feature selection and dimensionality reduction techniques, to analyze the financial data of 200 listed companies. The results showed that the SVM model achieved an accuracy rate of 92.5%, which further increased to 94.1% after integrating a neural network, significantly enhancing the ability to identify fraudulent activities. The findings provide important technical support for optimizing financial risk management and contribute to improving market transparency and corporate integrity. © 2025 The Authors.

Analyzing key users’ behavior trends in volunteer-based networks

The use of online social platforms and networks has surged over the past decade and continues to grow in popularity. In many social networks, volunteers play a central role, and their behavior in volunteer-based networks has been studied extensively. Here, we explore the development of volunteer-based social networks, focusing on the activities and behaviors of the most influential users. We introduce two innovative algorithms: the first outlines the evolution of volunteers’ behavior patterns over time, while the second employs machine learning techniques to forecast their future behavior, including whether they will remain active donors or become mainly recipients, and vice-versa. These algorithms allowed us to analyze the factors that significantly influence behavior predictions. We utilized data from over 2.4 million users on a peer-to-peer food-sharing online platform. Using our algorithm, we identified four key user behavior patterns over time to evaluate our algorithms. Moreover, we succeeded in forecasting future active donor key users and predicting the key users that would change their behavior toward donors, with an accuracy of up to 89.6%. The insights gained from our analysis not only shed light on the behavioral patterns of key users in volunteer-driven networks but also highlight the potential of machine learning in enhancing community engagement and building strategies for the future. © The Author(s) 2025.

GNNs and ensemble models enhance the prediction of new sRNA-mRNA interactions in unseen conditions

Bacterial small RNAs (sRNAs) are pivotal in post-transcriptional regulation, affecting functions like virulence, metabolism, and gene expression by binding specific mRNA targets. Identifying these targets is crucial to understanding sRNA regulation across species. Despite advancements in high-throughput (HT) experimental methods, they remain technically challenging and are limited to detecting sRNA-target interactions under specific environmental conditions. Therefore, computational approaches, especially machine learning (ML), are essential for identifying strong candidates for biological validation. In this paper, we hypothesize that ML models trained on large-scale interaction data from specific conditions can accurately predict new interactions in unseen conditions within the same bacterial strain. To test this, we developed models from two families: (1) graph neural networks (GNNs), including GraphRNA and kGraphRNA, that learn transformed representations of interacting sRNA-mRNA pairs via graph relationships, and (2) decision forests, sInterRF (Random Forest) and sInterXGB (XGBoost), which use various interaction features for prediction. We also proposed Summation Ensemble Models (SEM) that combine scores from multiple models. Across three seen-to-unseen conditions evaluations, our models —particularly kGraphRNA— significantly improved the area under the ROC curve (AUC) and Precision-Recall curve (PR-AUC) compared to sRNARFTarget, CopraRNA, and RNAup. The SEM model combining GraphRNA and CopraRNA outperformed CopraRNA alone on a low-throughput (LT) interactions test set (HT-to-LT evaluation). Beyond enhanced performance, our models enable target prediction for species-specific sRNAs, a capability lacking in some existing tools. Furthermore, GNN models remove the dependency on external tools like RNAplex or RNAup to compute hybridization duplex or energy features, enhancing scalability and runtime efficiency. A collaborative system that includes mobile devices (MDs), edge nodes (ENs), and the cloud is needed where ENs at the network edge can run offloaded tasks of MDs with limited resources and energy for timely processing for latency-sensitive applications. Unlike existing studies, we formulate a total cost minimization problem for the system for applications, which can be divided into several interdependent subtasks. Each subtask can be executed in MDs, ENs, and the cloud. This work formulates a mixed-integer nonlinear program to minimize the total system cost. To address it, a novel meta-heuristic optimization algorithm called Genetic Simulated-annealing-based Particle swarm optimization with Auto-Encoder (GSPAE) is proposed, which innovatively combines feature extraction of deep learning and global search of meta-heuristic optimization. Genetic operations provide diverse solutions, the Metropolis acceptance of annealing offers a robust global search, and autoencoders (AEs) extract distribution characteristics of particles toward high-quality regions for fast convergence. Thus, GSPAE optimizes the associations between ENs and MDs and the scheduling of subtasks among MDs, ENs, and the cloud. Experiments with large-scale Google cluster datasets show that compared to state-of-the-art benchmark methods, GSPAE reduces the total cost by at least 17% while strictly meeting limits of application latency, available energy, computing, and communication resources of ENs and MDs. © 2014 IEEE.

In Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-assisted Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) networks, the security of transmission faces significant challenges due to the vulnerabilities of line-of-sight links and potential eavesdropping on two-hop links. This paper addresses these challenges with an innovative Cooperative Secure Transmission and Computation strategy (CSTC), specifically engineered for time-slotted UAV-assisted MEC networks plagued by mobile collusive eavesdroppers. These eavesdroppers significantly bolster their interception capabilities through coordinated and optimized movements, escalating the security threats. To neutralize these risks, the proposed CSTC employs the UAV and remote devices as helper nodes to emit jamming signals, thereby thwarting eavesdropping activities, while simultaneously facilitating the efficient relay of users’ tasks to the base station for advanced processing. The CSTC aims to maximize the sum Secrecy Transmission Rate (STR) satisfying task latency constraints. It involves a joint optimization of UAV trajectory, jamming beamformers, transmit power, and data offloading strategy to expedite task transmission. Additionally, a real-time computation scheduling approach is developed based on a newly defined metric, the Urgency Degree of Users (UDoU), to enhance task processing efficiency. Our extensive simulations validate that the CSTC not only elevates the sum STR but also consistently meets latency constraints, demonstrating its robustness against advanced mobile eavesdropping techniques. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Maternal health is among the greatest challenges in the world, especially in rural areas as there lack medical practitioners, they do not have easily accessible publics clinics and transport is difficult. Therefore, high rates of maternal as well as infant morbidity and mortalities are recorded. This research utilizes Artificial Intelligence (AI) with machine learning algorithms to forecast and address maternal health hazards right at their onset stage. The current research utilizes the concept of AI along with many Machine Learning (ML) methods like the Ensemble Learning Model (ELM), Random Forest (RF), K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN), Decision-Tree (DT), XG-Boost (XGB), Cat Boost (CB), and Gradient Boosting (GB), along with Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) algorithm used for dealing with the problem class imbalance within the data set. SMOTE algorithm is utilized for the dataset balancing process. The handling system involves refining data preprocessing with the help of feature engineering and robust data cleaning which makes sure that anomalies do not erode the reliability of the predictive model. The existing methods [1] used RF (90%), DT (87%), XGB (85%), CB (86%), and GB (81%) algorithms and were compared with the accuracies of the proposed models like Logistic Regression (LR), Ensemble Learning Bagging (ELB), Ensemble Learning Stacking (ELS), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU). The existing methods used only imbalance dataset. The accuracies of the proposed models with using SMOTE algorithm (balanced dataset) are LR (61.33%), KNN (81%), ELB (92.33%), ELS (90.66%) CNN (40.67%), RNN (59.67%), LSTM (54%), GRU (56%) respectively. Among these methods, ELB achieved 92.33% of accuracy with using SMOTE algorithm using imbalanced dataset. Whereas the accuracies of the proposed models without using SMOTE algorithm (imbalanced dataset) are LR (66.09%), KNN (68.47%)

The ever-evolving Internet of Things (IoT) has ushered in a new era of intelligent manufacturing across multiple industries. However, the security and privacy of real-time data transmitted over the public channel of the industrial IoT (IIoT) remain formidable challenges. Existing lightweight protocols often omit one or more critical security features, such as anonymity and untraceability, and are susceptible to threats like desynchronization attacks. Additionally, they struggle to achieve an optimal balance between robust security and performance efficiency. To bridge these gaps, we introduce a new lightweight key agreement security scheme that guarantees secure access to the IIoT-enabled flexible manufacturing system (FMS). The strength of our scheme lies in its utilization of the authenticated encryption with associative data (AEAD) primitive, AEGIS, along with hash functions and physical unclonable functions, which secure the IIoT ecosystem. Additionally, our scheme offers flexibility in the form of the addition of new machines, password updates, and revocation in cases of theft or loss. A comprehensive security analysis demonstrates the efficacy of the proposed scheme in thwarting various attacks. The formal analysis, based on the Real-Or-Random (RoR) model, ensures session key indistinguishability, while the informal analysis highlights its resilience against known attacks. The comparative assessment demonstrate that the proposed scheme consistently outperforms the benchmark schemes across multiple dimensions, including security and functionality features, computational and communication overheads, and runtime efficiency. Specifically, the proposed scheme achieves peak performance enhancements of 77.55%, 44.73%, and 69.6% in computational overhead, runtime overhead, and communication overhead, respectively, underscoring its substantial performance advantages. © 2025 IEEE.

The utilization of Data-Driven Machine Learning (DDML) models in the healthcare sector poses unique challenges due to the crucial nature of clinical decision-making and its impact on patient outcomes. A primary concern in this domain is the data quality that forms the basis for these models, which is essential for their effectiveness. While numerous studies are dedicated to leveraging Machine Learning (ML) to enhance patient care, a substantial gap exists in understanding and evaluating the quality of training data before training ML models. This issue is exacerbated by the lack of well-defined standards to ensure that data characteristics align with the specific goals of ML in healthcare. To address this, our study introduces a conceptual three-dimensional framework focusing on data accuracy, completeness, and consistency aimed at assessing and improving the quality of training data. This framework is designed to enhance the performance, predictability, and interpretability of healthcare-specific ML models and reduce biases, thus bridging current research gaps and laying the groundwork for future developments in ML-driven healthcare systems. This paper presents the initial step for our proposed Data Quality Framework (DQF), which addresses the three dimensions mentioned above. It discusses its potential implications and applications in healthcare data, and its main goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of the proposed DQF, illustrating its significance in advancing healthcare data quality and ultimately improving patient outcomes. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Structure learning of Bayesian networks using sparrow optimization algorithm

Bayesian networks are powerful analytical models in machine learning, used to represent probabilistic relationships among variables and create learning structures. These networks are made up of parameters that show conditional probabilities and a structure that shows how random variables interact with each other. The structure is shown by a directed acyclic graph. Despite the NP-hard nature of learning Bayesian network structures, there has been significant progress in improving the accuracy of approximation solutions. The main focus is on score-based search strategies, which make use of functions to evaluate network models and identify structures with high scores. This study is significantly focused on structure learning Bayesian networks using the Bayesian Dirichlet equivalent uniform scoring function and metaheuristic search strategies. To this end, this paper presents the sparrow optimization algorithm (SOA), a new metaheuristic algorithm derived from the foraging behavior of sparrows. SOA performs a concurrent optimization in the solution space by simultaneously performing a local and global search that leads to the discovery of near-optimal structures. The results from our experiments on several benchmark datasets show that SOA yields overall better performance than SA and greedy search algorithms. In particular, it is claimed that by applying the proposed approach of SOA, the convergence speed is significantly higher compared with the existing ones;F1 score is 0.35 and 0.05 for the Hamming distance with better results. Given these results, signed operators prove to be very efficient in SOA’s Bayesian network structure learning as a concept, especially for real-world use. © (2024), (Society of Sytematic Innovation).
