This paper addresses the problem of deploying complex systems in Kubernetes clusters. It discusses using the OperatorSDK framework supported by RedHat as a basis for implementing the Kubernetes operator for Lightweight MultiAccess Edge Computing Platform Simulator (LWMECPS) deployment. Special attention is given to the operator Kubernetes architecture and how to use Operator Lifecycle Manager (OLM) to continuously deploy LWMECPS and machine learning models for it.

EcoWeedNet: A Lightweight and Automated Weed Detection Method for Sustainable Next-Generation Agricultural Consumer Electronics

Sustainable agriculture plays a crucial role in ensuring world food security for consumers. A critical challenge faced by sustainable precision agriculture is weed growth, as weeds share essential resources with the crops, such as water, soil nutrients, and sunlight, which notably affect crop yields. The traditional methods employed to combat weeds include the usage of chemical herbicides and manual weed removal methods However, these could damage the environment and pose health hazards. The adoption of automated computer vision technologies and ground agricultural consumer electronic vehicles in precision agriculture offers sustainable, low-carbon solutions. However, prior works suffer from issues such as low accuracy and precision and high computational expense. This work proposes EcoWeedNet, a novel model with enhanced weed detection performance without adding significant computational complexity, aligning with the goals of low-carbon agricultural practices. Additionally, our model is lightweight and optimal for deployment on ground-based consumer electronic agricultural vehicles and robots. The effectiveness of the proposed model is demonstrated through comprehensive experiments on the CottonWeedDet12 benchmark dataset reflecting real-world scenarios. EcoWeedNet achieves performance close to that of large models yet with much fewer parameters. (approximately 4.21% of the parameters and 6.59% of the GFLOPs of YOLOv4). This work contributes effectively to the development of automated weed detection methods for next-generation agricultural consumer electronics featuring lower energy consumption and lower carbon footprint. SSVEPPoolformer: An Improved Poolformer Model With the Adaptive Denoising Algorithm for SSVEP-EEG Signal Classification

Most EEG classification algorithms based on steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP-EEG) require filtering for denoising. However, manually set thresholds may inadvertently remove useful information, leading to a loss of significant signal features. Additionally, most deep learning-based SSVEP-EEG classification models have limited global feature extraction capabilities, and the self-attention mechanism in Transformers increases computational costs. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel SSVEP-EEG classification algorithm, SSVEPPoolformer. SSVEPPoolformer integrates an adaptive denoising algorithm with an improved Poolformer algorithm, enhancing both denoising performance and classification accuracy. The adaptive denoising algorithm dynamically adjusts the threshold using a compensation and adaptive adjustment mechanism, effectively filtering noise while retaining critical signal features. The improved Poolformer algorithm replaces the self-attention mechanism with an average pooling operation, reducing computational costs while maintaining performance. It also uses adaptive average pooling to integrate cross-channel feature information and extract global fine-grained features, improving global feature extraction. The SSVEPPoolformer model's efficacy was validated on two public datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that compared with other state-of-the-art methods, SSVEPPoolformer has higher classification accuracy and information Transfer Rate (ITR) in both intra-class and inter-class recognition scenarios, and has lower computational cost. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

nPGSAO: A Hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization and Genetic Algorithm with Niching Technology for Edge Server Placement

In this paper, we focus on the edge server placement problem (ESPP). ESPP is to decide positions (edge stations) where purchased edge servers (ESs) are placed when a service provider builds or upgrades its edge computing solution. The decision of ESPP largely determines the overall service quality and resource efficiency. We aim at providing ESPP solutions for optimizing the service quality in terms of the system response time, given a set of purchased ESs. To achieve this aim, we first deduce the optimal request dispatch for each edge station based on queue theory and Binomial theorem. Then, based on the deduced result, we formulate ESPP into a discrete nonlinear constrained optimization model. Because ESPP is NP-hard and generally multi-modality, we designed a hybrid metaheuristic algorithm to combine advantages of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and genetic algorithm (GA) as well as the niching technology, which is named nPGSAO. The basic idea of nPGSAO is grouping similar individuals into a niche and finding the niche best. Then, nPGSAO evolves each individual by integrating the swarm intelligence of PSO into the evolutionary process of GA based on its personal and niching best. To evaluate the performance of nPGSAO, we conducted extensive simulated experiments. The results show that nPGSAO achieves 5.78%–40.4% better response time with varied ESPP scale, compared to 11 up-to-date algorithms, and has a linear time complexity with the ESPP scale. These confirm the superior performance and scalability of nPGSAO. © 2014 IEEE.

The existing advanced machine learning approaches based on Graph Neural Networks (GNN) for efficient traffic engineering (TE) in software Defined Networking (SDN) overlook consideration of link reliability values. Link reliability is a very important parameter, directly linked to end-to-end delay for data packet transmission, and can be used to improve the delivery performance. This research article proposes two versions of RDG-TE, a novel model that integrates Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) and GNN in order to solve efficiently network TE problems by considering link reliability in both model training and reward computation. The proposed model enables improved performance by more accurately predicting the SDN network behavior in case of link failure. Testing results show that, in comparison to the closest state-of-art approach, our proposed approach reduces the number of disturbed flows by 24.19% and the hop count by 35.38% while also increases the reliable route prediction accuracy by 40.17%. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Architectural Distortion (AD) is a common abnormality in digital mammograms, alongside masses and microcalcifications. Detecting AD in dense breast tissue is particularly challenging due to its heterogeneous asymmetries and subtle presentation. Factors such as location, size, shape, texture, and variability in patterns contribute to reduced sensitivity. To address these challenges, we propose a novel feature fusion-based Vision Transformer (ViT) attention network, combined with VGG-16, to improve accuracy and efficiency in AD detection. Our approach mitigates issues related to texture fixation, background boundaries, and deep neural network limitations, enhancing the robustness of AD classification in mammograms. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model achieves state-of-the-art performance, outperforming eight existing deep learning models. On the PINUM dataset, it attains 0.97 sensitivity, 0.92 F1-score, 0.93 precision, 0.94 specificity, and 0.96 accuracy. On the DDSM dataset, it records 0.93 sensitivity, 0.91 F1-score, 0.94 precision, 0.92 specificity, and 0.95 accuracy. These results highlight the potential of our method for computer-aided breast cancer diagnosis, particularly in low-resource settings where access to high-end imaging technology is limited. By enabling more accurate and timely AD detection, our approach could significantly improve breast cancer screening and early intervention worldwide. © 2013 IEEE.

In mobile edge computing (MEC), task offloading can significantly reduce task execution latency and energy consumption of end user (EU). However, edge server (ES) resources are limited, necessitating efficient allocation to ensure the sustainable and healthy development for MEC system. In this paper, we propose a dynamic pricing mechanism based near-optimal resource allocation for elastic edge offloading. First, we construct a resource pricing model and accordingly develop the utility functions for both EU and ES, the optimal pricing model parameters are derived by optimizing the utility functions. In the meantime, our theoretical analysis reveals that the EU's utility function reaches a local maximum within the search range, but exhibits barely growth with increased resource allocation beyond this point. To this end, we further propose the Dynamic Inertia and Speed-Constrained particle swarm optimization (DISC-PSO) algorithm, which efficiently identifies the near-optimal resource allocation. Comprehensive simulation results validate the effectiveness of DISC-PSO algorithm, demonstrating that it significantly outperforms existing schemes by reducing the average number of iterations to reach a near-optimal solution by 86.88%, increasing the EU utility function value by 0.13%, and decreasing the variance of results by 96.78%. © 2025 IEEE. Runtime Backdoor Detection for Federated Learning via Representational Dissimilarity Analysis

Federated learning (FL), as a powerful learning paradigm, trains a shared model by aggregating model updates from distributed clients. However, the decoupling of model learning from local data makes FL highly vulnerable to backdoor attacks, where a single compromised client can poison the shared model. While recent progress has been made in backdoor detection, existing methods face challenges with detection accuracy and runtime effectiveness, particularly when dealing with complex model architectures. In this work, we propose a novel approach to detecting malicious clients in an accurate, stable, and efficient manner. Our method utilizes a sampling-based network representation method to quantify dissimilarities between clients, identifying model deviations caused by backdoor injections. We also propose an iterative algorithm to progressively detect and exclude malicious clients as outliers based on these dissimilarity measurements. Evaluations across a range of benchmark tasks demonstrate that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods in detection accuracy and defense effectiveness. Zero-Shot Cross-Domain Code Search without Fine-Tuning

Code search is a crucial task in software engineering, aiming to retrieve code snippets that are semantically relevant to a natural language query. Recently, Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs) have shown remarkable success and are widely adopted for code search tasks. However, PLM-based methods often struggle in cross-domain scenarios. When applied to a new domain, they typically require extensive fine-tuning with substantial data. Even worse, the data scarcity problem in new domains often forces these methods to operate in a zero-shot setting, resulting in a significant decline in performance. RAPID, which generates synthetic data for model fine-tuning, is currently the only effective method for zero-shot cross-domain code search. Despite its effectiveness, RAPID demands substantial computational resources for fine-tuning and needs to maintain specialized models for each domain, underscoring the need for a zero-shot, fine-tuning-free approach for cross-domain code search. The key to tackling zero-shot cross-domain code search lies in bridging the gaps among domains. In this work, we propose to break the query-code matching process of code search into two simpler tasks: query-comment matching and code-code matching. We first conduct an empirical study to investigate the effectiveness of these two matching schemas in zero-shot cross-domain code search. Our findings highlight the strong complementarity among the three matching schemas, i.e., query-code, query-comment, and code-code matching. Based on the findings, we propose CodeBridge, a zero-shot, fine-tuning-free approach for cross-domain code search. Specifically, CodeBridge first employs zero-shot prompting to guide Large Language Models (LLMs) to generate a comment for each code snippet in the codebase and produce a code for each query. Subsequently, it encodes queries, code snippets, comments, and the generated code using PLMs and assesses similarities through three matching schemas: query-code, query-comment,

Exploring Communication-efficient Federated Learning via Stateless In-network Aggregation

As an ambitious training paradigm, federated learning has garnered increasing attention in recent years, which enables collaborative training of a global model without accessing users' private data. However, due to the simultaneous and constant model updates gathering from massive distributed clients, the central server generally becomes a performance bottleneck. Additionally, the stateful aggregation (retaining all the updates from each client) conducted by the central server further poses potential threats to privacy, since it may recover the raw data based on such model updates inversely. The state-of-the-art methodologies, however, fail to address these two problems concurrently and efficiently. To this end, we propose GAIN, a secure aggregation acceleration service for federated learning. At its core, GAIN leverages programmable switches deployed at the edge network to aggregate model updates in a stateless manner before transmitting them to the central server. Consequently, GAIN can accelerate the transmission and aggregation of model updates while eliminating the chance of recovering private data. We evaluate the performance of GAIN through FPGA-based experiments and large-scale simulations. The results show that GAIN can effectively reduce bandwidth overhead and achieve up to 4.11× training throughput acceleration while prioritizing privacy protection. © 2025 IEEE.
