Standard distribution middleware has traditionally been perceived as complex software which is not suitable for satisfying the highest certification criteria in safety-critical environments. However, this idea is slowly changing and there are efforts such as the Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE) consortium to integrate standard distribution middleware into the development of avionic systems. This integration facilitates the interoperability and portability of avionic applications, but there are still challenges that need to be addressed before full success can be achieved. To this end, this paper explores the usage of the Data Distribution Service for real-time Systems (DDS) on top of a partitioned system with a communication network based on the ARINC 664 specification (precisely, the AFDX network). This work specifically identifies the incompatibilities between the two standards and also proposes potential solutions. A set of overhead metrics of using DDS in a distributed partitioned platform is also provided.

Partitioning techniques are implemented in the development of safety-critical applications to ensure isolation among components. An adequate scheduling of the execution of such partitions is a key challenge so that applications meet the hard deadlines imposed. In this work, we study the effect of different partition window configuration parameters, with the aim of analyzing their impact in the worst-case response times of system tasks. This is the first step in the development of an algorithm for optimizing partition windows in hierarchically-scheduled time partitioned distributed systems. © 2021, Ada-Europe. All rights reserved.

Managing the evolution of models becomes an extra requirement when adopting model-based software development approaches and technologies. When models are versioned using text-based version control systems (VCSs) such as Git, the reporting of differences is done by means of line-based diff operations over the model files, as it happens with the rest of the source code. Some model persistence formats are very verbose (e.g. XML Metadata Interchange (XMI)), which can make impractical or directly impossible to understand and take advantage of diff reports. We present munidiff: a text-based alternative format for reporting model differences that is compatible with the unified format, i.e. the existing de facto format to represent the output of line-based diff operations. This format is more concise than using a diff over XMI-persisted models, and its syntax to represent model differences can be customised. Using a comprehensive test suite from an existing model comparison technology (EMF Compare), we validate the completeness of this format to represent model differences, and its conciseness benefits over using a line-based diff. We also showcase how to generate a report in this format for model comparisons carried out by EMF Compare.

These days, more and more organizations are building data lakes as a mechanism to store the information they generate. This information is considered as a valuable asset that, if properly analyzed, can help to make more informed decisions. However, since the analyses to be performed are often not known in advance, these data are stored in a raw format. This means that any application built on top of a data lake must carefully elicit what data will be used for a particular analysis and how those data will be transformed to make them all fit together into a dataset. This data selection and preparation task is typically performed by data scientists that write large and complicated scripts in data management languages to extract and transform the required data. This reduces the productivity of data scientists, who must write large pieces of highly similar code. It also makes it difficult for domain experts to participate in this process because they have little understanding of these scripts. To alleviate this problem, this work introduces a work-in-progress version of a high-level declarative language for specifying the requirements that a dataset coming from a data lake must satisfy. This language is then processed to automatically generate the specified dataset, allowing data scientists and domain experts to be agnostic about the details of how data are exactly retrieved and transformed.

In this work, we report about research results initially published in ACM Transactions on software engineering and Methodology (TOSEM), volume 28 Issue 3, 2019 [Re19]. Nowadays software comes in many different, yet similar variants, often derived from common code via clone-and-own. Family-based-analysis strategies show promising potentials for improving efficiency of quality assurance for variant-rich programs, as compared to variant-by-variant approaches. Unfortunately, these strategies require one superimposed program representation containing all program variants in a syntactically well-formed, semantically sound, and variant-preserving manner, which is hard to obtain manually in practice. In this talk, we present our methodology SiMPOSE for generating superimpositions of program variants to facilitate family-based analyses of variant-rich software. We utilize a novel N-way model-merging methodology for control-flow automaton (CFA) representations of C programs, an abstraction used by many recent software-analysis tools. To cope with the complexity of N-way merging, we use similarity-propagation to reduce the number of N-way matches and enable incremental merging of arbitrary subsets of variants. We apply our SiMPOSE tool to realistic C programs and investigate applicability and efficiency/effectiveness trade-offs of family-based program analyses. Our results reveal efficiency improvements by a factor of up to 2.6 for unit-test generation and 2.4 for model-checking under stable effectiveness, as compared to variant-by-variant. © 2020 Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI). software has become an indispensable part of industrial production and thus influences the life cycle of manufacturing systems, as many of these systems have to be replaced or evolved due to changing requirements. software adaptation through continuous evolution extends the service time of these systems and thus saves valuable resources. In this paper we present an interdisciplinary methodology for reengineering legacy software to increase the productive lifetime. Our proposed approach systematically reuses implicit domain knowledge to evolve, validate and commission new software from legacy code. The approach is evaluated on a CNC machine as a special type of industrial system. © 2020 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.

How far are we from data mining democratisation? a systematic review

Context: Data mining techniques have demonstrated to be a powerful technique for discovering insights hidden in data from a domain. However, these techniques demand very specialised skills. People willing to analyse data often lack these skills, so they must rely on data scientists, which hinders data mining democratisation. Different approaches have appeared in the last years to address this issue. Objective: Analyse the state of the art to know how far are we from an effective data mining democratisation, what has already been accomplished, and what should be done in the upcoming years. Method: We performed a state-of-the-art review following a systematic and objective procedure, which included works both from the academia and the industry. The reviewed works were grouped in four categories. Each category was then evaluated in detail using a well-defined evaluation criteria to identify its strengths and weaknesses. Results: Around 700 works were initially considered, from which 43 were finally selected for a more in-depth analysis. Only two out of the four identified categories provide effective solutions to data mining democratisation. From these two categories, one always requires a minimum intervention of a data scientist, whereas the other one does not provide support for all the stages of the data mining process, and might exhibit accuracy problems in some contexts. Conclusion: In all analysed approaches, a data scientist is still required to perform some steps of the analysis process. Moreover, automated approaches that do not require data scientists for some steps expose some problems in other quality attributes, such as accuracy. Modern software often exists in many different, yet similar versions and/or variants, usually derived from a common code base (e.g., via clone-and-own). In the context of product-line engineering, family-based analysis has shown very promising potential for improving efficiency in applying quality-assurance techniques to variant-rich software, as compared to a variant-by-variant approach. Unfortunately, these strategies rely on a product-line representation superimposing all program variants in a syntactically well-formed, semantically sound and variant-preserving manner, which is manually hard to obtain in practice. We demonstrate the SiMPOSE methodology for automatically generating superimpositions of N given program versions and/or variants facilitating family-based analysis of variant-rich software. SiMPOSE is based on a novel N-way model-merging technique operating at the level of control-flow automata (CFA) representations of C programs. CFAs constitute a unified program abstraction utilized by many recent software-analysis tools. We illustrate different merging strategies supported by SiMPOSE, namely variant-by-variant, N-way merging, incremental 2-way merging, and partition-based N/2-way merging, and demonstrate how SiMPOSE can be used to systematically compare their impact on efficiency and effectiveness of family-based unit-test generation.
