Nowadays, sailing in formation has been the major trend with the rise of unmanned ships. In the past, research about unmanned catamaran formation were more focused on algorithmic control, but the changes in hydrodynamic performance and energy are often overlooked. In nature, various collective behaviors indicate that followers would obtain significant energy consumption from beneficial interaction in certain formation configurations. Based on the previous research, the high-speed catamaran delft-372 was chosen as the basic numerical model in this paper. Four ship’s formation configurations (tandem, "trimaran", and rectangle formations) are proposed to analyze the influence on the hydrodynamic performance of each ship, based on the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) method in combination with the Shear Stress Transport (SST) k-ω turbulence model. Through comparative analysis, it can be seen that the resistance and motion of the following ships have been optimized under specific formation configurations, but the impact of various formation configurations is quite different. In terms of single ship’s energy preservation, the last following ship of "trimaran" formation has the best performance. For the whole, tandem formation is the optimal fleet configuration. In conclusion, the hydrodynamic performance of four catamarans in different formation configurations has been studied, which can provide some reference significance. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

With the fast development of highly-integrated distributed systems (cluster systems), designers face interesting memory hierarchy design choices while attempting to avoid the notorious disk swapping. Swapping to the free remote memory through Memory Collaboration has demonstrated its cost-effectiveness compared to over provisioning the cluster for peak load requirements. Recent memory collaboration studies propose several ways on accessing the under-utilized remote memory in static system configurations, without detailed exploration of the dynamic memory collaboration. Dynamic collaboration is an important aspect given the run-time memory usage fluctuations in clustered systems. Further, as the interest in memory collaboration grows, it is crucial to understand the existing performance bottlenecks, overheads, and potential optimization. In this paper we address these two issues. First, we propose an Autonomous Collaborative Memory System (ACMS) that manages memory resources dynamically at run time to optimize performance. We implement a prototype realizing the proposed ACMS, experiment with a wide range of real-world applications, and show up to 3x performance speedup compared to a non-collaborative memory system without perceivable performance impact on nodes that provide memory. Second, we analyze, in depth, the end-to-end memory collaboration overhead and pinpoint the corresponding bottlenecks. © 2012 IEEE.

This special issue of the Journal of Networks includes extended versions of extended versions of selected best papers accepted and presented at the 8th International Joint Conference on e-Business and Telecommunications (ICETE 2011). Eight papers were selected based on their excellent review scores. Their authors were invited to submit extended versions, which have undergone a second review process to guarantee that all the papers included in this Special Issue have been rigorously peer-reviewed. The accepted papers cover areas like empirical evaluations, simulation modeling and theoretical studies addressing a variety of topics related to security in telecommunications, wireless networking, and *** first paper “Simplified Scheduling for Underwater Acoustic Networks” is authored by W. Van Kleunen, N. Meratnia and P. J. M. Havinga. It proposes an interesting solution to the scheduling and routing issues in underwater acoustic networks, giving a simplified set of constrains. These constrains are applied to three new scheduling algorithms: centralized for maximum throughput, distributed for low computational costs and centralized for low-latency end-to-end communications. The evaluation by simulation explores extensively the benefits obtained when the new set of constrains is applied to the proposed *** second paper, entitled “Power Management Mechanism Exploiting Network and Video Information over Wireless Links” authored by C. Bouras, S. Charalambides, K. Stamos, S. Stroumpis and G. Zaoudis, describes some cross-layer mechanisms to manage power consumption in wireless communications. Ship pipe route design (SPRD) is one of the most complex and time-consuming processes in ship detail design. Currently, there are many researches on the optimization of ship pipe routes, but there is still a lack of effective and convenient methods to build the pipe routing space. In order to solve this problem, a piping space modeling method for SPRD is proposed. This method is based on stereo lithographic (STL) file which is commonly used in data exchange, and it can convert the initial space model built in 3D-CAD software into the data model required by the pipe routing algorithms. For the application purpose, a piping space modeling utility (PSMU) is developed with Python and OpenGL, promoting the development of practical pipe routing system. Finally, the feasibility and practicability of the proposed method are verified by the experiment on the piping space of an actual ship fuel system. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Adaptive Data Forwarding Scheme for Diverse Infotainment Services in Vehicular Named Data Networking

Providing diverse infotainment services is crucial for enhancing road safety and improving the overall driving experience in vehicular networks. However, delivering these services within Vehicular Named Data Networking (VNDN) environments presents significant challenges, primarily due to the data broadcast phenomenon and the varying Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of different applications. This paper introduces an adaptive data forwarding scheme designed to effectively manage these challenges and optimize the delivery of infotainment services in VNDN. Our proposed scheme enhances the data packet format by incorporating additional attributes that prioritize data based on its criticality, specifically categorizing it into critical, non-critical, and entertainment data. Furthermore, we introduce an Enhanced Weighted Fair Queuing (EWFQ) policy to optimize the scheduling of data packets according to their importance. Two innovative data forwarding schemes, namely Advanced Push-based Data Forwarding (APDF) and Enhanced Pull-based Data Forwarding (EPDF), are developed to address the needs of critical and non-critical information and entertainment data, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that our adaptive data forwarding scheme significantly outperforms legacy fragment schemes in delivering infotainment data within dynamic VNDN environments, ensuring reliability and efficiency. This paper contributes to advancing data dissemination strategies in vehicular networks and lays the groundwork for future research in adaptive QoS management. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

In the context of software architecture recovery, visual representations can allow architects or developers to perceive and comprehend the recovered information faster. Many visualizations address various facets of the complex information space, but there are no systematic approaches for the architect to efficiently evaluate candidate visualizations for suitability, or to explore ways to extend them. The resultant ad-hoc selection from available generic visualizations leads to ineffective comprehension and analysis. We propose a viewpoint-driven approach towards tackling this problem. From a comparison of the conceptual models of architectural viewpoints and information visualization, we observe that focusing on the concerns framed by a viewpoint can guide the suitable selection of visualization tasks. The viewpoint description also serves a source for the definition of the visualization dataset. Starting from a seed visualization, a simple measure called the task/concern coverage allows the architecture visualization designer to decide if the resulting visualization can express all the desired concerns. This approach is illustrated with an example of the Polyptychon hierarchical dependencies visualization.

Due to variations in the global distribution of temperature and salinity in the oceans, the natural stratification of seawater is commonlyac knowledged as a pervasive phenomenon worldwide, with regions of rapidly stratified seawater referred to as "thermocline" or "pycnocline".The generation of density gradients provides a prerequisite for the initiation of internal waves. As vessels and submarines navigate through these stratified environments, disturbances to the density-stratified flow field are induced due to the effects of buoyancy, thereby triggering the far-field propagation of internal waves. In recent years, research and discussions on the wakes of underwater vehicles in density-stratified flows have become relatively prevalent. However, analyses and summaries of the interference caused by free liquid surfaces in density stratified flows remain unexplored. This study employs a two dimensional cylinder model to investigate the regulatory effects of a free liquid surface on the wake of a two-dimensional cylinder in a stratified flow environment. A comparison is made between the force coefficients and far-field wake of the two-dimensional cylinder in the real thermocline environment and a homogeneous flow environment around the Froude number range of 0.1 – 0.5. The results indicate that the favorable adverse pressure gradient generated in the stratified environment can reduce the drag force on the cylinder. Despite the lower frequency, stratification is still capable of suppressing the vertical movement range of the wake at © 2024 by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).

The objective of the work presented in this paper is to develop a computational capability based on the indirect variational boundary element method (IVBEM) to evaluate appropriate velocity boundary conditions on an assembly of piston type sources such that they can recreate a prescribed acoustic field. Information for the acoustic pressure of the original acoustic field at certain field points constitutes the input to the developed process. Several new developments associated with the IVBEM are completed within the field reconstruction process. A new formulation for treating irregular frequencies in the IVBEM is developed and implemented in the field reconstruction process. The velocities on the piston type sources are computed from transfer functions between the field points, where the acoustic pressure of the original field is prescribed, and the velocity boundary condition on each element of the generic source. The IVBEM is employed for computing the transfer functions. A singular value decomposition solver is integrated with the IVBEM computations in order to evaluate the velocity boundary conditions from the transfer functions. Finally, an algorithm is developed that identifies the optimum field points where the acoustic pressure of the original field must be prescribed. The optimum field points are selected from a set of prescribed candidate points. The selection of the optimum points is based on the geometric characteristics of the generic source, the frequency of analysis, and the properties of the medium. Product line development places emphasis on quality attributes like understandability, maintainability, reusability and variability. Better modularization techniques like aspect-oriented programming are supposed to improve these attributes. In the context of an industrial case study in the domain of infrastructure software for toll systems from Siemens AG, Germany, we have investigated how OO designs can be enhanced using AO techniques. We have explored, in particular, how sequential crosscutting concerns can be modularized using AspectJ and how distributed ones can be modularized using AWED, a system that features aspects with explicit distribution. Concretely, we show how sequential and distributed aspects improve the implementation of the charge calculation functionality that is central to real-world tolling systems. Copyright 2007 ACM.

Linking components with end-user requests for processing is problematic when there are fundamental language differences between component specifications and how individual users state their needs. Appropriate components may not exist, the users may not know if a component exists until a one matching their requirements is generated, or the users may adjust their requirements. For complex systems governed by a community of interest, we introduce a Fusion architecture coupled with Contract Templates (FACT). The Fusion architecture assists with syntactic and semantic unification of user directives. Contract Templates provide a standardized mechanism to collect heterogeneous systems within domains of interest. Based upon specific analysis of each component, Contract Templates attach connectors to generate integrated systems to which queries can be directed. A case study demonstrates how FACT enables military analysts to direct the use of simulation software for the experimentation of command and control behaviors within missions.
