The urban parking spaces for loading/unloading are typically over-occupied, which shifts delivery operations to traffic lanes and pavements, increases traffic, generates noise, and causes pollution. We present a data analytics based routing optimization that improves the circulation of vehicles and utilization of parking spaces. We formalize this new problem and develop a novel multivehicle route planner that avoids congestions at loading/unloading areas and minimizes the total duration. We present the developed tool with an illustration and analysis for the urban freight in the city of Barcelona, which monitors tens of thousands of deliveries every day. Our system includes an effective evaluation of candidate routes by considering the waiting times and further delays of other deliverers as a first class citizen in the optimization. A two-layer local search is proposed with a greedy randomized adaptive method for variable neighborhood search. Our approach is applied and validated over data collected across Barcelona's urban freight transport network, which contains 3,704,034 parking activities. Our solution is shown to significantly improve the use of available parking spaces and the circulation of vehicles, as evidenced by the results. The analysis also provides useful insights on how to manage delivery routes and parking spaces for sustainable urban freight transport and city logistics.

Joint Proper Orthogonal Decomposition: A Novel Perspective for Feature Extraction from Multivariate Cavitation Flow Fields

Modal decomposition, as a data-driven approach to extract important features from fluid flow, is widely used in the field of fluid mechanics. Cavitating flow is a complex physical phenomenon, and the interpretation of cavitation flow relies on the comprehensive analysis of multi-variable flow field features. However, traditional modal decomposition algorithms, such as Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD), ignore the potential interactions and correlations among variables, which limits their effectiveness in capturing the underlying physical characteristics of the system. In this paper, we draw inspiration from the concept of joint representation in the field of multi-modal learning, and propose the use of Joint POD (JPOD) as a promising fluid mechanics analysis tool to extract multi-variable features of cavitation flow. We elaborate on the differences between JPOD and POD in four aspects: reconstruction error, data structure, flow field features, and flow modalities. JPOD increases the reconstruction error slightly but strengthens the correlations between multi-variables in the flow field. The modalities obtained by JPOD exhibit strong regularity and interpretability, and the pattern features between different variables are related, which cannot be achieved by the POD algorithm alone. The successful combination of joint representation and POD algorithm demonstrates that it can be regarded as an optimization and standardization method for traditional modal decomposition algorithms, with broad application prospects in the field of modal decomposition. © 2023, The Authors. Facing the current sustainability challenges requires reduction of the building stock energy consumption towards the European Green Deal targets by 2050. This can be accomplished by adopting techniques such as fault detection and diagnosis, and efficiency optimization. An occupancy-based algorithm for scheduling ventilation operations in buildings is here developed, aimed at optimizing the system’s operation according to occupancy profiles while maintaining a comfortable indoor climate. By relying only on electricity meters without using carbon dioxide or occupancy sensors, we use historical data of an Estonian school to develop a DBSCAN-based clustering algorithm that generates consumption profiles. A novel occupancy estimation algorithm, based on threshold and time series methods, then creates 12 occupancy schedules that are either based on classical detection with on-off method or on occupancy estimation for demand-controlled ventilation (DCV). We find that, compared to standard on-off scheduling, DCV-based occupancy estimation induces systematic savings in terms of both energy and costs from 18.1% up to 62.6%, still complying with current national regulations of indoor air quality. Remarkably, as our method relies only on occupancy schedules, thus eliminating reliance on weather and other external factors, it can immediately be extended to other countries. © 2023, The Authors. This paper describes a series of electronics packaging scale-up events proved to be prolific and full of maturity. The organizing structure and the topics are consistent, with pragmatic implications and transparency in the proposed solving with industrial conciseness and level of detail required. Given the high focus on functional and constructive details of the subjects revealed to the contestants (who are bachelor and master students), which are similar to industry requirements, it is worthy to understand, based on this paper, the basics of the environment, established three more than decades ago. The students who have participated proved their competitive potential and there is a high return on investment (ROI) in specialists and experts for the IEEE EPS community. By our active involvement, we hope to give to the next generations of hardware engineers the chance to apply their electronics knowledge in the vast field of the electronics industry.

The Predictor for Urban Buildings' Hourly Electricity Consumption

The accurate prediction approach of urban buildings' electricity consumption is an important foundation for smart urban energy management. It provides the decision basis for electricity deployment at peak times. This paper presents a knowledge graph of urban building electricity consumption called ECKG. It provides an effective way to obtain the influencing factors of buildings' electricity consumption. In addition, in order to improve the accuracy of prediction, this paper proposes the logarithmic electricity consumption gravity model and error correction model based on data selection. We use 17520 hours' electricity consumption of a five-star hotel building in Shanghai, China as the study case, and 8 common models as benchmarks to conduct the comparisons. Our approach outperforms all benchmarks in terms of average accuracy.

A COmponent-based Methodology to derive Parallel programs to solve Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) Solvers, termed COMPODES, is presented. The approach is useful to obtain distributed implementations of numerical algorithms which can be specified by combining linear algebra operations. The main contribution of the approach is the possibility of managing several implementations of the operations and exploiting the problem structure in an elegant and systematic way. As a result, software reusability is enhanced and a clear structuring of the derivation process is achieved. The approach includes a technique to take the lowest level decisions systematically and is illustrated by deriving several implementations of a numerical scheme to solve stiff ODEs. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

Comparison of Dimensionality Reduction Techniques for Multi-Variable Spatiotemporal Flow Fields

In the field of fluid mechanics, it is a potential consensus that nonlinear dimensionality reduction (DR) techniques outperform linear methods. However, this conclusion has been obtained based on simple fluid phenomena and an incomplete evaluation system of dimensionality reduction algorithms. In this study, we use an improved evaluation system of DR methods to compare and evaluate the performance of four DR methods, including two linear techniques: Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Independent Component Analysis (ICA), and two non-linear techniques: Isometric Mapping (ISOMAP) and Locally Linear Embedding (LLE). The four methods are applied to analyze a complex hydrodynamic flow field with cavitation by considering the joint features of multiple variables. Results show that LLE can capture redundant features that do not contribute to understanding the characteristics of flow fields, while ISOMAP is more suitable for handling datasets with multiple scales than LLE. PCA and ISOMAP can successfully capture the characteristics and evolution of flow fields. In addition, 3D supplementary information can assist ICA in improving the problem of identifying unstable flow field states. Overall, PCA may be the more meaningful way of dimensionality reduction for complex physical problems. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Finite Element Analysis of the Mechanical Performance of Reinforced Concrete Beams with different Steel Plate Strengthening Rates

In order to study the effect of different ratios of steel plate strengthening the bottom of reinforced concrete beams on the mechanical properties of the beam, based on the area of the bottom of the beam, various steel plate reinforcement schemes of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% were designed. ABAQUS is used for static load calculation and comparative analysis with unreinforced reinforced concrete. The results show that : (1) Different ratios of steel plate strengthening the bottom of reinforced concrete beam can improve the bearing capacity of the beam, but the growth of the bearing capacity slows down after the steel plate ratio reaches 75% of the area of the beam bottom; (2) Reinforcing steel plates with different ratios at the bottom of the beam can improve the flexural performance of the beam. It is suggested that the steel plate reinforcement ratio should be selected reasonably in engineering practice.
