Chiral metamaterials are manmade structures with extraordinary mechanical properties derived from their special geometrical design instead of the chemical composition. To make the mechanical deformation programmable, the Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) curves are taken to replace the traditional ligament boundaries of the chiral structure. The Neural Networks are innovatively inserted into the calculation of mechanical properties of the chiral structure instead of finite element methods to improve computational efficiency. For the general problem of structure configuration determination with specified mechanical properties, such as Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio or deformation, an inverse design method using the Neural Network-based surrogate model is proposed to build the relationship between local geometric configuration and overall deformation. To satisfy some more complex deformation requirements, a non-homogeneous inverse design method is proposed and verified through simulation and experiments. Numerical and test results reveal the high computational efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method in the device design of chiral metamaterials. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Training, testing and benchmarking medical AI models using Clinical AIBench

AI technology has been used in many clinical research fields, but most AI technologies are difficult to land in real-world clinical settings. In most current clinical AI research settings, the diagnosis task is to identify different types of diseases among the given ones. However, the diagnosis in real-world settings needs dynamically developing inspection strategies based on the existing resources of medical institutions and identifying different kinds of diseases out of many possibilities. To promote the development of different clinical AI technologies and the implementation of clinical applications, we propose a benchmark named Clinical AIBench for developing, verifying, and evaluating clinical AI technologies in real-world clinical settings. Specifically, Clinical AIBench can be used for: (1) Model training and testing: Researchers can use the data to train and test their models. (2)Model evaluation: Researchers can use Clinical AIBench to objectively, fairly, and comparably evaluate various models of different researchers. (3) Clinical value evaluation: Researchers can use the clinical indicators provided by Clinical AIBench to evaluate the clinical value of models, which will be applied in real-world clinical settings. For convenience, Clinical AIBench provides three different levels of clinical settings: restricted clinical setting, which is named closed clinical setting, data island clinical setting, and real-world clinical setting, which is called open clinical setting. In addition, Clinical AIBench covers three diseases: Alzheimer's disease, COVID-19, and dental. Clinical AIBench provides python APIs to researchers. A Framework for Incorporating Rainfall Data into a Flooding Digital Twin

The growing prominence of digital twins for environmental applications has sparked the development of several digital twin frameworks, especially in the context of hydrological applications. Despite this, operational digital twins for flood risk assessment remain a challenge. The feasibility of a digital twin is dependent on a diverse range of data types to accurately represent, simulate, and predict the behaviour of a real-world system. In the case of flood risk, digital twins are reliant on good information about the behaviour of precipitation. For hydrodynamic flood risk, particularly in an urban setting, this needs to be at a high resolution in both space and time, which is not always available. In this study, we explore if the current state of rainfall monitoring in a real-time open-access setting is sufficient for a flood risk digital twin. Subsequently, we apply these data as part of a real-time dynamic flood risk framework, from data access (APIs) to flood depth visualisations. A platform for dynamic hyper-resolution flood risk assessment, integrating novel and hidden data sources (PYRAMID) is used, relying on hydrological and hydrodynamic models in a robust *** highlight the shortcomings of existing rainfall data in terms of open access and real-time availability, hindering the development of an operational digital twin framework for flood risk. National weather radar data was unavailable 6.1% of the period considered, and national rain gauges were very sparsely distributed, with only 13 national gauges within the hydrological model domain, and none within the hydrodynamic model domain. Additional rainfall data was considered to improve estimates, which showed mixed results. To address these challenges, we introduce a data prioritisation algorithm for integrating real-time rainfall data into the model framework robustly, combined based on practical measures. In the present paper the experimental research dedicated to derivation of anhydrite cements with upgraded mechanical, physical properties and water resistance. The mechanism of the influence of technogenic fine-dispersed additives such as burnt galvanic sludges to the structure and properties of anhydrite matrix is discovered. The anhydrite cements were selected and the rational spheres for its application in the building industry were offered.

Electric, hybrid-electric, and turbo-electric distributed propulsion technologies and concepts are beginning to gain traction in the aircraft design community, as they can provide improvements in operating costs, noise, fuel consumption, and emissions compared to conventional internal combustion or Brayton-cycle powered vehicles. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is building multiple demonstrators and testbeds to buy down airworthiness and flight safety risks for these new technologies, including X-57 Maxwell, Hybrid-Electric Integrated Systems Testbed (HEIST), Airvolt, and NASA Electric Aircraft Testbed (NEAT). This paper addresses the safety system design process used at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center, specific hazards associated with these new electric propulsion technologies, including an extensive investigation into the emergency-stop system for a HEIST, and other best practices. In general, the best course of action is to actively design out hazards associated with these systems, but when removing these hazards is either impossible or impractical, other safety protocols including keep-out zones, lock-out/tag-out, and other practices should be implemented.

Parallel integration of hydrodynamical approximations of the Boltzmann equation for rarefied gases on a cluster of computers

The relaxed Burnett system, recently introduced in as a hydrodynamical approximation of the Boltzmann equation, is numerically solved. Due to the stiffness of this system and the severe CFL condition for large Mach numbers, a fully implicit Runge-Kutta method has been used. In order to reduce computing time, we apply a parallel stiff ODE solver based on 4-stage Radau IIA IRK. The ODE solver is combined with suitable first order upwind and second order MUSCL relaxation schemes for the spatial derivatives. Speedup results and comparisons to DSMC and Navier-Stokes approximations are reported for a 1D shock profile.

AbstractsIn this paper, we present a new seismic metamaterial (SM) for the suppression of Lamb waves and surface waves utilizing the negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) foam. The periodic cell of the metamaterial is composed of a square cylinder made of steel in the center and NPR foam connecters at the corners. Utilizing the unique resonance properties of the NPR material, an ultra-low-frequency broadband wave suppression is achieved. First, the characteristics of bandgaps (BGs) of the proposed structure with different materials were analyzed using the finite element (FE) method. It shows that the application of the NPR foam can significantly broaden the BGs compared with the case using the traditional rubber. The vibration modes were analyzed to investigate the mechanism of BG generation. Subsequently, the frequency-domain analysis was carried out to verify the shielding effect of the designed SM on Lamb waves, using a periodic structure consisting of 10 × 6 unit cells. It shows that the designed SM can effectively attenuate Lamb waves in the range of 3-44 Hz with attenuation up to -590 dB at 32Hz. From a parametric analysis, it shows that the NPR foam with small thickness, high modulus, low mass density, and low Poisson's ratio can broaden the first complete BG. In addition, the acoustic cone method was combined with the frequency-domain analysis to calculate the BGs of the proposed structure against the surface wave, using a periodic structure consisting of 20 unit cells. It shows that the surface wave can be significantly attenuated within the BG. Finally, real seismic excitations were applied for time-domain analyses, and the simulation results show that the proposed structure can effectively shield the low-frequency seismic surface waves in the range of 0.1-20 Hz. The accurate prediction of offshore wind speed is crucial for effective wind energy management. Deep learning models, utilizing large-scale wind speed time series, have emerged as a prominent approach for this task. However, the availability of wind history and other oceanic data are often capriciously incomplete, with intermittent gaps in the time series due to transmission difficulties or measurement device malfunctions. This presents a significant challenge for both data preparation and model training. In this paper, a self-supervised model, WindFix, is proposed for versatile imputation of offshore wind time series using meteorological features from both the self-spot and neighboring spots. The numerical results validated on wind dataset from Pacific Ocean show that the model can serve for various missing types with a mean squared error around 0.002 for the simplest continue-missing case. The comprehensive analysis also provided deep explanations on the different patterns occurring in various imputation types, attributing to the allocation of attention weights on features. © 2023, The Authors. The complex flight and ground systems for NASA human space exploration are designed, built, operated and managed as separate programs and projects. However, each system relies on one or more of the other systems in order to accomplish specific mission objectives, creating a complex, tightly coupled architecture. Thus, there is a fundamental need to understand how each system interacts with the other. To determine if a model-based system engineering approach could be utilized to assist with understanding the complex system interactions, the NASA engineering and Safety Center (NESC) sponsored a task to develop an approach for performing cross-system behavior modeling. This paper presents the results of applying Model Based Systems engineering (MBSE) principles using the System Modeling Language (SysML) to define cross-system behaviors and how they map to crosssystem software interfaces documented in system-level Interface Control Documents (ICDs).

Because of the opening of In-vehicle network, there are several important problems to be dealt with, such as the security and validity of data. Firstly, the article builds a construct model based on driving behavior and speed. Secondly, it makes an analysis of preventing data injection by using the construct model above and the naive Bayesian network classifier, so as to take effective measures to guarantee the vehicle security. In the end, an experimental simulation is carried out to prove that the proposed method can effectively improve the accuracy of data quality analysis and lower the false rate as well. © Copyright 2017, Institute of software, the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
