In a Personal Communication Services (PCS) network, mobile hosts communicate with other mobile hosts through base stations on a wired (static) network. The mobile hosts connect to different base stations through wireless links and the base stations to which mobile hosts are connected change depending on the current location of the mobile hosts. In this environment, the problem of efficiently delivering a multicast message from one mobile host to a group of other mobile hosts becomes challenging. In this paper, we present a multicast protocol that delivers multicast messages from a mobile host to a group of other mobile hosts without flooding the wired network. The multicast protocol is built on top of a user location strategy that should follow one of the three models of user location described in the paper. The basic multicast protocol proposed guarantees exactly-once message delivery to all mobile hosts in the multicast group and also ensures that multicast messages are delivered in FIFO order from the point of view of the base station that originates the multicast message (referred to as BS-FIFO). More importantly, an extension of the basic protocol is provided that, unlike earlier work, delivers multicast messages in FIFO order from the point of view of the mobile host that initiates the multicast message (referred to as MH-FIFO). The modifications to be made to the multicast protocol to accommodate each of the three models of user location is also described.

This paper describes the construction of and early experiences with a software engineering support environment for projects using globally distributed teams. The goals of the project are twofold. Firstly, it aims to construct a pragmatic solution to the problems experienced by widely geographically dispersed groups which collaborate on software development projects. Secondly, it aims to experiment with processes which facilitate software shift work through exploitation of time differences between collaborating groups. The construction of the support environment, known as GWSE (Global Working in software engineering) system, is presented, including its architecture and integration with existing workflow, document and project management tools. The use of the GWSE system in a trial development project is then described, including an initial quantitative analysis of the collaboration overheads experienced.

This paper presents a rule-based approach for online Chinese character recognition without writing constraints on both stroke number and order. Stroke correspondence is accomplished based on rules predefined such that combinatorial exhaustion can be avoided for character matching. Stroke correspondence rules contain the basic stroke types and geometric features of strokes. Because rules are constituted by invariant structural features, wide handwriting variations can be accommodated. Utilizing the structural characteristics in Chinese characters, we represent the reference database hierarchically to reduce its data size. It only requires O(n log n) time to accomplish stroke correspondence between a template of n strokes and an input script using the hierarchical reference database. This approach is very suitable for those systems with very limited computing resource. © 1996 IEEE.

On-line handwritten Chinese characters recognition (OLCCR) is the key technology for Chinese pen-based systems. Handwriting may vary in stroke shapes, character configuration, stroke order, and the number of strokes. These variations make machine recognition difficult. There are multitudinous categories and complicated structures in Chinese characters. Therefore, for an OLCCR system, efficient storage techniques of the reference database are important especially for those portable computers with very limited computing resources. Basically, simple Chinese characters are constructed by basic strokes according to fixed structural rules, and complicated characters are composed of radicals or components based on fixed geometric configurations. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical representation for the reference database of an OLCCR system using a structural recognition method, in which both stroke-number and stroke-order variations can be tolerated in the recognition system. The major structural knowledge used in recognition includes stroke correspondence rules, spatial relationships between strokes, and character patterns. We utilize components and character structures to represent characters. Only the structural knowledge of components are stored, and the structural knowledge of each character can be retrieved based on its constituent components and its character structure. Both the representation method and the retrieving method of the structural knowledge are proposed in the paper. The storage requirement of the reference database is reduced to 1/4 of the amount without using hierarchical representation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

This paper describes a reuse-oriented approach to software development currently being investigated at Rolls Smith Engine Controls Limited (RoSEC). It argues that reuse be structured at three levels: domain, component and artifact. The authors demonstrate how these three levels have been used to achieve the systematic reuse of requirements for engine control software. Practical lessons from applying domain-specific techniques to system development are also discussed.

LAN systems are widely used in distributed environment and it becomes more indispensable to manage distributed LAN systems in an integrated manner as enterprise-level networks. This paper describes the LAN fault management ensemble which has been developed by the Ensemble Team of INTAP NM (Network Management) Technical Committee. Ensembles represent specific solutions to particular problems of the networks as a collection of managed resources, functions and scenarios. This ensemble provides a method of managing an enterprise-level private network in particular fault management areas. OSI management is adopted as a platform to manage LANs which are assumed to be managed by SNMP or OSI layer management protocols. This ensemble takes a state-oriented approach which is better suited, and provides more efficient integrated network management for large-scale enterprise networks containing many resources to be managed, because SNMP management is performed by polling based on the stateless approach. In addition, this ensemble adopts international standards or publicly available specifications regarding the necessary management information. Integrated management is executed by the OSI manager and proxy agents. Proxy agents act as OSI agents and convert information gathered by SNMP manager/agents or OSI layer management entities to OSI. Various network resources such as FDDI, Ethernet and MIB-II are defined on the basis of definition of the ISO/IEC, IEEE and NM Forum standards and additional necessary resources are uniquely defined for this ensemble requirements.

We study the performance of a fuzzy control scheme as a first step to develop better control strategies for avoiding congestion and attaining high link utilisation in ATM based networks. Due to the complexity of ATM networks and the many parameters involved, explicit modeling of their dynamic behaviour is very difficult if not impossible. On the other hand, for systems which are difficult to obtain analytical models for, approximate models developed by using fuzzy logic based techniques are being applied successfully. We summarize our investigation on the suitability of fuzzy logic control techniques to solve difficult ATM network control problems. As a part of our ongoing research, we describe and report the performance of the fuzzy backward congestion notification (FBCN) method to support best effort service such as the available bit rate (ABR) service in ATM based networks.

Concurrent engineering (CE) is a proven approach for product realization that results in reduced time to bring a product to market, improved product and service quality, and reduced life-cycle costs. Time-to-market improvements of 30% to 60% are typical of a disciplined approach to concurrent engineering. Concurrent engineering integrates and synchronizes activities and the information required to define, design, produce, deliver the product or service, and to maintain the product or service over its life cycle. This paper reaches beyond a simple explanation of CE and provides examples of how powerful CE implementations can be. The paper: Describes the elements of an infrastructure and supporting technologies for a CE-based product realization process (PRP), Provides guidance for deploying CE by explaining a broad-based CE implementation process, and Shares tips and ideas on how an individual or small team can catalyze CE in an organization.
