This paper represents an attempt to automatically classify alertness state using information extracted from multi-channel EEG. To reduce the amount of data and improve the performance, a channel selection method based on support vector machine (SVM) classifier has been performed. The features used for the EEG channel selection process and subsequently for alertness classification represent the energy values of the five EEG rhythms;namely δ, θ, α, β and γ. In order to identify the feature/channel combination that leads to the best alertness state classification performance, we used a fuzzy rule-based classification system (FRBCS) that utilizes differential evolution in constructing the rules. The results obtained using the FRBCS were found to be comparable to those of SVM but with the added advantage of revealing the rhythm/channel combination associated with each alertness state. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

AUC is an important performance measure and many algorithms have been devoted to AUC optimization, mostly by minimizing a surrogate convex loss on a training data set. In this work, we focus on one-pass AUC optimization that requires going through the training data only once without storing the entire training dataset, where conventional online learning algorithms cannot be applied directly because AUC is measured by a sum of losses defined over pairs of instances from different classes. We develop a regression-based algorithm which only needs to maintain the first and second-order statistics of training data in memory, resulting a storage requirement independent from the size of training data. To efficiently handle high-dimensional data, we develop a randomized algorithm that approximates the covariance matrices by low-rank matrices. We verify, both theoretically and empirically, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Copyright 2013 by the author(s).

The purpose of our research is to enable the management of the requirements elicitation process. To manage something, we fist have to observe it quantitatively. Therefore, to manage the requirements elicitation process, we must observe the process quantitatively. We are currently trying to observe requirements quantitatively in accordance with their categories. In general, requirements are classified into two categories: functional and non-functional. The requirements categories can be refined to more adequately observe them. We defined the taxonomy of requirements. In this paper, the classification rules of words in requirements are proposed. A prototype tool was developed, and named the "requirements counting tool (RCT)," with classification rules and morphological analysis. The rules were evaluated by comparing the results of the RCT and manual classification with the logrank test. In the paper, the results are shown, and the adequacy of the rules is confirmed. © 2013 IADIS.

Many kinds of ciphertext-policy attribute-based encryption (CP-ABE) schemes have been proposed. In CP-ABE, the set of user attributes is associated with his/her secret key whereas a policy is associated with a ciphertext so that only users whose attributes satisfy the policy can decrypt the ciphertext. CP-ABE may be applied to a variety of services such as access control for file sharing systems and content distribution services. However, CP-ABE costs more for encryption and decryption in comparison with conventional public key encryption schemes since it can handle more flexible policies. In particular, wildcards, which mean that certain attributes are not relevant to the ciphertext policy, are not essential for a certain service. In this paper, we construct a partially wildcarded CP-ABE scheme with a lower decryption cost. In our scheme, the user's attributes are separated into those requiring wildcards and those not requiring wildcards. Our scheme hence embodies a CP-ABE scheme with a wildcard functionality and an efficient CP-ABE scheme without wildcard functionality. We compare our scheme with the conventional CP-ABE schemes and describe a content distribution service as an application of our scheme.

There is a need for tools to classify cells based on their three-dimensional (3D) shape. Cells exist in vivo in 3D, cells are frequently cultured within 3D scaffolds in vitro and 3D scaffolds are used for cell delivery in tissue engineering therapies. Recent work indicates that the physical structure of a tissue engineering scaffold can direct stem cell function by driving stem cells into morphologies that induce their differentiation. Thus, we have developed a rapid method for classifying cells based on their 3D shape. First, random lines are intersected with 3D Z-stacks of confocal images of stem cells. The intersection lengths are stored in histograms, which are then used to train a support vector machine (SVM) learning algorithm to distinguish between stem cells cultured on differentiation- inducing 3D scaffolds and those cultured on non-differentiating flat substrates. The trained SVM is able to properly classify the 'new' query cells over 80% of the time. The algorithm is easily parallelizable and we demonstrate its implementation on a commodity graphics processing unit (GPU). Use of a GPU to run the algorithm increases throughput by over 100-fold as compared to use of a CPU. The algorithm is also progressive, providing an approximate answer quickly and refining the answer over time. This allows further increase in the throughput of the algorithm by allowing the SVM classification scheme to terminate early if it becomes confident enough of the class of the cell being analyzed. These results demonstrate a rapid method for classifying stem cells based on their 3D shape that can be used by tissue engineers for identifying 3D tissue scaffold structures that drive stem cells into shapes that correlate with differentiation. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Adaptive systems are critical for future space and other unmanned and intelligent systems. Verification of these systems is also critical for their use in systems with potential harm to human life or with large financial investments. Due to their nondeterministic nature and extremely large state space, current methods for verification of software systems are not adequate to provide a high level of assurance. The combination of stabilization science, high performance computing simulations, compositional verification and traditional verification techniques, plus operational monitors, provides a complete approach to verification and deployment of adaptive systems that has not been used before. This paper gives an overview of this approach. © 2012 ACM.

There is lot of personal multimedia content (audio, image, video) being generated due to the ease of generating such content with the everyday devices, such as, mobile phones and also due to the plummeting cost of media-generating devices, such as, digital cameras which have made them ubiquitously available. Almost everyone wants to share his/her personal content with family and friends. In addition to this sharing, there needs to be proper mechanism of accessing this content by technically non-savvy people. This is more so a requirement for the masses in an emerging economy like India where broadband access is almost non-existent, and for the elderly people everywhere, who use TV as their main device for accessing media. We present a system, which sits in the Internet cloud, simplifies content upload and organization, and allows seamless sharing and access of the multimedia content across networks and devices. Most importantly, the content can be accessed from any one of the 3 types of screens: web/PC, mobile, TV. The system hides all the complexity of the storage, formatting, and organization of the media content from the users. Performance evaluation of the system shows that it is robust against variations of bandwidth, delay and jitter in a mobile wireless network and is reasonably scalable with the increase in the number of users.

This paper deals with the study of the role of Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) as a means to create low cost value added services for emerging countries. Most mobile telecommunication providers worldwide are tied up to third party USSD solution providers. The latter keep their infrastructure closed, which means that the development of services to be offered over USSD comes at a cost. We target this close infrastructure solution, and provide an open source web enabler in the form of an Application Programming interface (API), that can be used to deliver low cost services to mobile end users in emerging countries. The implementation of our solution, in the form of a prototype, has been successfully tested on the Orange (France Telecom) network.

With the rapid development and the richer content of the Internet, the copyright protection of the works should be further developed. The watermarking has become a possible solution. In this paper, firstly, a novel hybrid multiplicative rule is presented and utilized to embed the watermark into DWT coefficients controlled by the secret key. Secondly, the optimum and locally optimum hybrid multiplicative multi-watermarking decoders are proposed, respectively, which are based on the minimum Bayesian risk criterion. The DWT coefficients are modeled as the generalized Gaussian distribution. Nextly, the performance of the optimum hybrid watermarking decoder, i.e. the average bit error rate is theoretically analyzed. Then the security of the hybrid multiplicative watermarking scheme is compared with the existing schemes. Finally, experimental results prove the theoretical analysis valid.
