Grid is becoming an interesting and challenging environment supporting both old and new services for cooperative applications, which promote individual enterprises engaged in a collaborative community. This cooperation pressure results in an increased focus on the interconnection of member enterprises within virtual organization that necessitates the new highly scalable networking technology. Accordingly, this paper proposes the small world community for collaborative enterprises through randomly exchanging neighbors in an initially fixed regular graph. We discuss the community maintenance algorithm such as member joining and leaving, and give related complexity analysis. We also show this small world community network is high clustering, short diameter and highly scalable. Finally, we empirically evaluate the algorithm by some simulation experiments.

software risk advisory tools have been developed to support Verification and Validation (V&V) processes for NASA flight projects on the Constellation program. The Orthogonal Defect Classification COnstructive QUALity MOdel (ODC COQUALMO) predicts software defects introduced and removed classifying them with ODC defect types, allowing various tradeoff analyses. We have been exploring methods to design and optimize V&V processes with static and dynamic versions of the quality model by integrating it with different risk minimization techniques. These techniques allow "what-if" experimentation to determine the impact of V&V techniques on specific risks and overall flight risk. V&V techniques are quantified from a value-based perspective when the defect model is integrated with machine learning, strategic optimization and JPL's Defect Detection and Prevention (DDP) risk management method. Results to-date show that the automated methods are practical for flight projects to design higher value V&V processes in shorter time and with fewer resources.

Current peer-to-peer (P2P) infrastructures such as CAN, chord and tapestry provide scalable infrastructure for simple keyword based search. But, they cannot be applied directly in many real-life applications that use multi-attribute schema. In this paper, we present MAPS, an algorithm that supports multi-attribute schema and offers multi-attribute search capability in P2P network. The presented algorithm extends tapestry routing algorithm and is capable of supporting complete as well as partial match of multi-attribute queries. We implemented the algorithm and conducted a number of experiments to study the performance behaviour of MAPS. A comparison with other multi-attribute search methods like MAAN demonstrates the usefulness of MAPS

In today's enterprises data lies across multiple sources in custom formats, often there exists no means to access (query and update) these data sources in a common enterprise wide uniform format. The requirement has led to emergence of data services platforms that allow real time access of data from multiple data sources. These platforms provide service oriented data access interfaces to both XA compliant and non XA compliant resources towards creation of data service interfaces. Specifically since these platforms provide SOA based shared access to data, these are termed as shared data services (SDS) platforms. One of the primary challenges in such a platform is managing access and transaction context across both XA compliant and non XA compliant resources. In this paper we discuss how these issues are presently addressed and propose enhancements over existing techniques to automate distributed transactions in SDS platforms. Wireless sensor networks aim at a special kind of ad hoc networks, exposing an energy-constrained distributed computing environment. Proposed protocols have tried to incorporate power management schemas of the likes of reduced duty cycles and active synchronization. However this has led to a significant loss in the latency of data delivery. In this work we have introduced low latency medium access control (LLM), as a mechanism to deliver data with low latency without compromising the energy efficiency of the network. To this end we exploit the data aggregating properties of a sensor network and introduce a pre-notification packet to keep potential forwarding nodes aware of a forthcoming data packet. Our simulations show that LLM does perform as per expectations

Existing protocols for medium access in wireless sensor networks opt for staggered wakeup scheduling among clusters of nodes. However intra-cluster contention and interference has remained an unaddressed issue. In this work we propose PELLMAC: power efficient and low latency MAC for wireless sensor networks, a schema that addresses node scheduling for channel access. By limiting contention between adjacent branches of the data gathering tree, we are able to reduce the latency of the network, as well as optimize energy utilization. Simulation results, in accordance with our claims, show that PELLMAC enhances performance in energy savings, latency and delivery ratio

Service oriented architecture (SOA) is an approach for building distributed systems that deliver application functionality as a set of self-contained business-aligned services with well-defined and discoverable interfaces. This paper presents a systematic and architecture-centric framework, named service oriented architecture framework (SOAF), to ease the definition, the design and the realization of SOA in order to achieve a better business and IT alignment. The proposed framework is business-process centric and comprises a set of structured activities grouped in five phases. It incorporates a range of techniques and guidelines for systematically identifying services, deciding service granularity and modeling services while integrating existing operational/legacy systems. The results from a pilot validation of SOAF for SOA enablement of a realistic securities trading application are presented. Best practices and lessons learned are also discussed

Service oriented architecture (SOA) is an approach for building distributed systems that deliver application functionality as a set of self-contained business-aligned services. It promises lower integration costs, increased reusability and improved enterprise agility and adaptability. One of the key obstacles for SOA is the presence of existing legacy applications that support critical business processes but are inflexible and hard to adapt for integration with other business applications. This paper presents a survey of key approaches to integrate/transform legacy applications into services to participate in an enterprise-wide SOA. It also presents a decision framework to guide architects in selecting the optimal combination of legacy modernization options

The variation of contexts in which a Web service could be used and the resulting variation in quality of service (QoS) expectations makes a clear case for further research to extend Web services management platforms with more sophisticated control mechanisms to cater for differentiated service offerings. However, most Web services platforms are based on a best-effort model, which treats all requests uniformly, without any type of service differentiation or prioritization. This paper presents WS-DiffServ, a service differentiation middleware based on prioritization which leverages service requestor profile to classify service requests. We first explore the typical generic requirements of a differential QoS support in Web services management. We then present in detail the design of a priority based differentiated responsiveness platform for Web services

Semantic scene classification is a useful, yet challenging problem in image understanding. Most existing systems are based on low-level features, such as color or texture, and succeed to some extent. Intuitively, semantic features, such as sky, water, or foliage, which can be detected automatically, should help close the so-called semantic gap and lead to higher scene classification accuracy. To answer the question of how accurate the detectors themselves need to be, we adopt a generally applicable scene classification scheme that combines semantic features and their spatial layout as encoded implicitly using a block-based method. Our scene classification results show that although our current detectors collectively are still inadequate to outperform low-level features under the same scheme, semantic features hold promise as simulated detectors can achieve superior classification accuracy once their own accuracies reach above a nontrivial 90%
