Recent accounting scandals involving firms such as such as Enron, Worldcom, Tyco etc. have resulted in the emergence of stringent regulations aimed at safeguarding the interest of enterprise stakeholders. Important regulations such as Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), the US PATRIOT act in US and the International Accounting Standards (IAS) regulation in Europe have diverse and far reaching effects. Organizations are mandated to comply with these regulations by producing certain documents and reports during the audit. This calls for appropriate extensible document lifecycle management solutions involving integration and reconciliation of stored data from heterogeneous sources with quick detailing. This is because these regulations demand easy accessibility of data. While point solutions to document life cycle management exist, they are not cost effective. The paradigm of service oriented architecture (SOA) which emphasizes software development based on well abstracted services has presented application development and adaptation a new dimension. SOA enables flexible deployment of shared reusable compliance services thereby yielding malleable and cost effective compliance solutions. In this paper, we provide a logical SOA based approach for achieving compliance in enterprises and illustrate this approach for a typical compliance need

The growing need for enterprises to have instantaneous access and visibility to data is fuelling the need for enterprise data integration. An enterprise having fragmented systems on varied technologies is a very commonly occurring scenario. In this paper we take a business case scenario with heterogeneous systems and describe a non-intrusive service oriented approach for achieving enterprise wide data integration. We take a holistic view of the problem statement and propose an end to end architectural approach that encompasses the ETL activities to the shared data access layer. This meta-data based architecture is highly extensible requiring minimal change in existing applications and business process yet adhering to the long term architectural strategy. We also propose the creation of fine grained shared business services which are supported by underlying shared data services.

A grid is described as a distributed network which comprises of heterogeneous and non-dedicated elements. The heterogeneity of a grid is not only defined in terms of computing elements and operating systems but also in terms of implementation of policies, policy decisions and the environment. Currently, most grid solutions are targeted at the high performance community for e-sciences and hence are not adequate for enterprises. In this paper, we present an enterprise level workflow and grid management system called the unified grid management and data architecture (UGanDA) which takes care of most needs of enterprises and can be used in traditional e-sciences high performance community as well. It consists of two components: a grid workflow manager called GridWorM and a grid infrastructure manager called MAGI. The two independently deployable components orchestrate to provide the final goal. Representative results are discussed to prove the effectiveness of the system.

The variation of contexts in which a Web service could be used and the resulting variation in functional and quality of service (QoS) requirements motivates further research to extend Web services platforms to cater for differentiated service offerings and dynamic adaptability. Adaptability is an important requirement in the context of Web services to cater for the need of diverse set of client applications requesting customized view of consumed Web services to fit their own contexts and preferences. This paper presents an ongoing project to devise a novel service composition framework, named AdaptiveBPEL that leverages aspect-oriented software development (AOSD) techniques to open up the service composition for dynamic change in order to provide a greater degree of configurability and dynamic adaptability of Web services. This framework can: 1) easily adapt to changes in business rules, and collaboration policies governing service interactions; 2) provide different levels of functional and QoS offerings. The adaptation process is policy-driven to declaratively define the adaptive service behavior through dynamic injection of functional and non-functional extensions into a core service composition to allow on-demand and per-instance service adaptability.

The scattering of pattern logic (the attributes and methods of pattern role) is the most typical problem on design pattern instantiation, that is, pattern logic scatters across multiple business classes, which causes problems, such as, debasing the reusability of pattern logic, losing the instantiation information of pattern (traceability and overlapping problem) etc. To resolve these problems in design level, an approach to design pattern instantiation based on RoleOf relationship is proposed. It treats role as the independent modeling element and introduces RoleOf relationship between business class and role, which makes the business logic and the pattern logic completely separated, thus improves its reusability. Through the extension of UML, the meta-model and semantics of RoleOf relationship, and stereotypes and tagged values used for identify pattern information are provided, it resolves the traceability and overlapping problem. Finally, the implementation method of RoleOf relationship is discussed through an example.

This paper presents a TriMedia processor extended with an IDCT reconfigurable design and assesses the performance gain such an extension has when performing MPEG-2 decoding. We first propose the skeleton of an extension of the TriMedia architecture which consists of a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA)-based Reconfigurable Functional Unit (RFU) a Configuration Unit managing the reconfiguration of the RFU and their associated instructions. Then we address the computation of the 8 × 8 (2-D) IDCT on such extended TriMedia and propose a scheme to implement the 1-D IDCT operation on the RFU. When mapped on an ACEX EP1K100 FPGA from Altera the proposed 1-D IDCT exhibits a latency of 16 and a recovery of 2 TriMedia@200 MHz cycles and occupies 45% of the logic cells of the device. By configuring the 1-D IDCT on the RFU at application launch-time the IEEE-compliant 2-D IDCT can be computed with the throughput of 1/32 IDCT/cycle. This figure translates to an improvement over the standard TriMedia of more than 40% in terms of computing time when 2-D IDCT is carried out in the framework of MPEG-2 decoding. Finally the proposed reconfigurable IDCT is compared to a number of existing designs. © 2005 Springer Science + Business Media Inc.

Shoestring budgets coupled with increasing performance requirements have become the bane of IT departments the world over. With networking capabilities becoming the norm for most applications, bandwidth is crucial for performance. Bandwidth sizing is thus, gaining importance as IT managers insist on getting indicative sizing estimates as part of the requirements gathering phase to enable them to get a "heads up" for budgeting and procurement. Recent technologies including Web services, business process modeling tools, and grid computing, are key to facilitating business agility. Web services standardize application interfaces to ease inter-application communication, and facilitate standards based business process management. Grid computing provides a way for virtualizing heterogeneous resources to collectively yield a computationally powerful IT environment with tremendous promise in improving utilization levels of individual IT resources. By leveraging Web services, a standards based grid is being envisaged in the OGSA model. In this paper, we explore the complementarities of Web services and business process management (BPM) technologies. We also lay the foundation for using Web services based BPM in solving orchestration and workflow issues in grid computing.

Interoperability refers to the ability of software and hardware on multiple machines from multiple vendors to communicate with each other without significant changes on either side. Web services streamline enterprise application integration by making it easier to tie applications running on heterogeneous platforms together helping them communicate correctly, effectively and at reduced cost. The difficulty of integration is a function of the level of interoperability between the applications being integrated. Even though there are established standards for Web services messaging (SOAP), description (WSDL) and discovery and registry (UDDI), custom implementations of these protocols by individual vendors has led to various interoperability issues. Web Services Interoperability Organization (WS-I) recently released Basic Profile 1.0, addressing the interoperability issues with core Web services standards. In this paper, we look at some of the key Web services interoperability issues pointed out by practitioners and critically examine how Basic Profile 1.0 addresses them. Further we also examine some limitations of the profile. We conclude by evaluating a popular Web services implementation against the profile and present our observations.
