Mobile virtualization introduces extra layers in software stacks, which leads to performance degradation. Especially, each I/O operation has to pass through several software layers to reach the NAND-flash-based storage systems. This paper targets at optimizing I/O for mobile virtualization, since I/O becomes one of major performance bottlenecks that seriously affects the performance of mobile devices. Among all the I/O operations, a large percentage is updating metadata. Frequent updating metadata not only degrades overall I/O performance but also severely reduces flash memory lifetime. In this paper, we propose a novel I/O optimization technique to identify the metadata of a guest file system which is stored in a VM (Virtual Machine) image file and frequently updated. Then, these metadata are stored in a small additional NVM (Non-Volatile Memory) which is faster and more endurable to greatly improve flash memory's performance and lifetime. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to identify the file system metadata from regular data in a guest OS VM image file under mobile virtualization. The proposed scheme is evaluated on a real hardware embedded platform. The experimental results show that the proposed techniques can improve write performance to 45.21% in mobile devices with virtualization.

Sudden infant death syndrome is the most frequent cause of death in infancy and the risk is highest for premature babies. Although the elicitors are still unknown, the final mechanism is oxygen undersupply caused by respiratorial irregularities e.g. Apnea. Existing apnea detection systems are neither able to identify and suppress false alarms nor to notify emergency staff automatically. To tackle these and similar problems, we present a two-level approach for developing smart health assistance systems that are intelligent and reliable at the same time. On the device level, we can use our data dependent controller synthesis approach to establish a smart alarm system that is able to detect false alarms and to trigger color-coded alarm notifications automatically. On the communication level, we present an approach for analyzing communication networks to ensure a reliable infrastructure for the routing of emergency messages generated by the controller. We exemplify the application of this two-level approach by reference to a smart apnea detection system based on an intelligent, reliable, and automatic emergency alarm.

Driving fatigue has been considered as a significant risk factor in transportation accidents, and the development of the human cognitive state based on electroencephalogram (EEG) has become a major focus in the field of driving safety. However, it faces portable and real-time problems on its practical application. This study uses MindWave to collect the Attention and Meditation EEG from the left prefrontal lobe of the subject, and uses the relation between Attention and Meditation EEG when the subject is in the state of concentration, relaxation, fatigue and sleep being measured first. As a result, a new method for driving fatigue detection based on the correlation coefficient between drivers Attention and Meditation EEG is proposed. Meanwhile, the k-Nearest Neighbors (k-NN) algorithm is introduced to classify the correlation coefficient between the drivers Attention and Meditation EEG, so as to detect driving fatigue and alert. Lastly, the software running on an Android smart device is developed based on the above technologies, and the experiment proves that it has noninvasive and real-time advantages, while its sensitivity and specificity are 68.31% and 90.43% respectively.

Dynamic sensor networks applied as health-monitoring assistance systems require a constant supervision to assure the availability of essential network channels during emergencies. Topology changes due to connection and hardware failures have to be observed and reacted to. For that, an algorithm is needed that monitors topology changes within the network automatically without human interaction. The Fiedler vector is a powerful heuristic for topology inference, e.g. to detect communication bottlenecks. Current algorithms for the distributed calculation of the Fiedler vector do not consider topology changes. In this paper, we provide a stable algorithm for the distributed, indulgent derivation of the Fiedler vector which is applicable within dynamic networks. Simulation results show its robustness to topology changes.

The design of programs controlling distributed components in safety-critical domains can be very error-prone and time-consuming. Especially in the presence of real-time requirements the correctnesswith respect to functional and non-functional properties must be guaranteed. To this end, we develop a technique for the automated and correct composition of timed services based on timed i/o automata, the temporal logic TCTL, and planning algorithms based on model checking. Thus, we can speed up the development of controller programs while assuring correctness. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

Automating functional size measurement (FSM) is important for organizations needing to measure a large number of projects within a short timeframe, provided, of course, that the results automatically generated are accurate, particularly when such measurement is based on an international measurement standard. A literature review has shown that very little work has been conducted on verifying measurement results produced by FSM automation. This paper presents a verification protocol designed to provide evidence of the accuracy of an automated FSM tool using the COSMIC ISO 19761 measurement standard. Also included are: an example of its use for the verification of an AUTOSAR-based FSM automation prototype tool developed at ESTACA, and a case study on the application of the proposed verification protocol on another prototype tool developed at Renault S.A. © 2014 IEEE.

It is a major challenge in software engineering to statically analyze in advance the expectable run-time behavior of applications. The most needed information is the expected execution time of a function to determine its computational cost. In this paper, we present a sophisticated approach that solves this problem by utilizing Machine Learning (ML) techniques based on regression modeling to automatically derive precise predictions for this information. This enables to focus optimization efforts on the parts that are relevant for the resulting performance and to predict execution times of functions on different processing elements of a heterogeneous architecture. Among others, our approach eliminates the need for manual annotations of run-time information, which automates and facilitates the development of complex software, thus improving the software engineering process. For our experiments that demonstrate the accuracy of our approach, we have used a considerable number of programs from various benchmark suites which encompass different realworld application domains. This shows on the one hand the general applicability and on the other hand the high scalability of our ML techniques. © 2013 IEEE.

In general, program execution spends most of the time in a small fraction of code called hot spots of the program. These regions where optimization would be most beneficial are mainly composed of loops and must be identified to enable hot spot optimizations. Consequently, identifying hot spots involves determining loop iteration counts arising at run-time of the program, which is often not knowable in advance at run-time and even less statically knowable at compile time of the application by using only static analyses. In this paper we present a sophisticated approach using machine learning techniques to automatically generate heuristics that provide the compiler with knowledge of this run-time behavior, hence yielding more precise heuristics than those generated by pure static analyses. Our experimental results demonstrate the accuracy of our approach and show the general applicability to a wide range of programs with different behavior as we have used 175 programs of 12 benchmark suites in total from different real-world application domains for our experiments. Among others, our approach eliminates the need for manual annotations of run-time information, which automates and facilitates the development of complex software, thus improving the software engineering process. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper, a communication task scheduling evaluation model based on the queue model is proposed to analyze the wireless sensor performance parameters. The typical communication task scheduling which deals with all communication tasks scheduling requests and makes actions or responses. A task scheduling-preemptive-priority model is proposed to simulate and analyze typical wireless sensor network using matrix-geometric theory. And then, several merits of the communication task schedule are obtained, including the communication task loss rate, the average response time and the wireless sensor occupancy rate. At last, experiments are conducted to show the performance of our scheme. Simulation results manifest that when sensor usage rate up to 97%, our scheme is feasible for wireless sensor networks. © 2013 IEEE.

Model-driven software development employs models to describe different aspects of a system on different levels of abstraction. These aspects are driven by technology or application domain. Modeling is often done in specific graphical or textual notations, called domain-specific languages (DSL). In recent years such languages became very popular in the modeling community to describe structure and sometimes behavior. In the context of type systems, these structures are called types and the behavior is modeled with expressions. The programming language community has developed many concepts to model and specify type systems and the semantics of expressions. However, in the modeling community this is often neglected when specifying meta models and describing their semantics, what may cause problems in developing checks and generators for DSLs. To address this issue, we present an approach, that provides guidance and support during DSL development based on established knowledge on type systems and generator construction, to ease the integration of type systems in DSL. We evaluate this approach with the Xtext language engineering framework. © Gesellschaft für Informatik, Bonn 2013.
