There is a growing concern about adversarial attacks against automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems. Although research into targeted universal adversarial examples (AEs) has progressed, current methods are constrained by inefficient exploitation of audio features, demonstrating insufficient attack ability and robustness in the physical world. To solve this problem, we propose a phoneme-tailored attack (PTA) to improve the quality of the generated AEs. Specifically, to improve attack ability, we propose a Diverse Audio Composition Enrichment method, which enhances the utilization of audio features through phoneme-level slicing and recombination. To adapt AEs to complex environments, we propose a Natural Noise Pattern Guidance method to align AEs with natural noise patterns to improve their robustness. Experiments show that our method achieves an average accuracy of more than 72.34% and 98% with and without a norm constraint, and also demonstrates excellent performance in terms of generalization across datasets and resilience to MP3 compression. © 2025 IEEE.

Decompose-Compose Feature Augmentation for Imbalanced Crack Recognition in Industrial Scenarios

Automated crack recognition has achieved remarkable progress in the past decades as a critical task in structure health monitoring, to ensure safety and durability in many industrial scenarios. However, imbalanced crack recognition remains challenging due to the scarcity of crack samples and the consequential limited diversity. To resolve this, Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) has been gradually adopted to generate synthetic data and reduce reliance on large amounts of labeled crack samples. This paper assumes that a crack sample in the feature space can be regarded as a combination of crack and background semantics. Then, the decompose-compose feature augmentation framework (DeCo) is proposed to perform crack data synthesis in the feature space by randomly composing crack and background semantic-relevant features. Specifically, the contrastive learning-based decomposing loss is proposed to enforce two encoders to separately learn crack and background semantics from crack samples with the theoretical guarantee. After that, an effective cross-instance feature union strategy is proposed to synthesize diverse crack samples by composing the crack-relevant features from a crack sample and background-relevant features across other training samples. To address the limited availability of related benchmarks, we collect INPP2022 and IRC2022 datasets from real-world applications in nuclear power plants and road pavement. Experimental results show that DeCo performs favorably against state-of-the-art competitors in imbalanced crack recognition tasks. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Person re-identification (Re-ID) has been widely used in public security and surveillance. Due to the influence of different shooting times and locations, can lead to lighting variations in the images captured by the camera, and the lighting variations seriously affect the Re-ID performance. Existing methods utilize images under different lighting conditions to transform to uniform lighting conditions to eliminate the effect of lighting on Re-ID. However, these methods ignore the fact that different illumination metric distances have different recognition performances. Therefore, we propose the optimal illumination distance metric, by analyzing different light distances for pedestrians in different light conditions, we find that there exists an optimal light condition in which the distance between image pairs is smaller than the distance in other light conditions. The distance under the optimal lighting condition is used in the retrieval process as the distance between its final sorted image pairs. To verify the effectiveness of our method, Market-1501-IA and Duke-MTMC-IA datasets are constructed, and a large number of experiments are conducted under different lighting conditions to verify the existence of the optimal lighting conditions and the effectiveness of the proposed method. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Due to the uncertain nature of drought, it is one of the most menacing natural disasters. Drought modeling (Prediction, Detection, Forecasting, and Stage Prediction) is very essential for efficient policy making. But one of the key problems with drought modeling is the limited availability of centralized datasets. To address this problem, we are a novel proposing federated learning based transfer learning models for the prediction of drought stages. In this study, satellite image dataset was collected from the Tharparkar district (prone to drought) of Pakistan. We trained the dataset using traditional and federated learning approaches, comparing centralized ML models, pre-trained models, and their respective federated learning models (FL-ResNet, FL-DenseNet, FL-MobileNet). The development of these models is the novel aspect of the study specifically for the use case of drought stage prediction. Based on the final evaluation, FL-MobileNet achieved 82% precision while baseline MobileNet scored 68%. The results show the effectiveness of novelty (federated learning), that our proposed framework improves the performance of the drought stage classification task. © The Author(s) 2025.

A Memetic Algorithm Based Feature Weighting for Metabolomics Data Classification

A metaheuristic chain based memetic algorithm namely MCMA is proposed for the classification of metabolomics data. MCMA regards both global evolution and local search as equivalent elemental metaheuristics, and searches with a chain of metaheuristics performed alternatively on the target problem. A hidden Markov model based scheduling mechanism is employed in MCMA for the selection of metaheuristics. By using MCMA for optimizing the linkage weight vector, a feature weighting algorithm for metabolomics data is formed to identify relevant metabolite features and reveal their exact relationships with the given physiological states. An extreme learning machine based classifier is utilized in predicting the physiological states according to the weighted metabolite features. Experimental results on real metabolomics data of clinical liver transplantation demonstrate that the proposed feature weighting and classification method obtains better performance than the other compared algorithms.

Strong linearizability is a variant of linearizability and is more suitable for verification. In this paper we investigate the following two problems: (1) for which deterministic sequential specifications there exist linearizable but not strongly linearizable objects;(2) can we capture any violation scheme of strong linearizability for practical objects that are linearizable but not strongly linearizable. To deal with the first problem, we propose two classes of deterministic sequential specifications called inclusively-permutative sequential specifications and exclusively-permutative sequential specifications. The first class of sequential specifications contains sequential specifications of counter, register, max-register, snapshot, set, queue, stack and priority queue. The second class of sequential specifications contains sequential specifications of blocking queue, blocking stack and blocking priority queue. To establish these results, we propose a uniform methodology to construct a wait-free, linearizable but not strongly linearizable object for these two classes of sequential specifications. Our universal construction is based on the classical universal construction, and it additionally permits each operation to change the "take-effect-order" of previous operations. To deal with the second problem, we use bi-branch distinguishable executions to represent violations of strong linearizability. We investigate eight objects that are linearizable but not strongly linearizable, and we show that for each object, it has a pair of bi-branch distinguishable executions such that our universal construction can generate another pair of bi-branch distinguishable executions with the same set of histories. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Towards Integrated Spatial Crowdsourcing: Online Privacy-Preserving Selection

We study an intriguing and practical scenario of online Spatial Crowdsourcing (SC), in which workers have the flexibility to perform tasks using various methods, such as walking, driving, or utilizing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). This results in workers having heterogeneous, arbitrary, and non-stationary utilities over time. We refer to this scenario as integrated SC. Unfortunately, existing studies are limited in addressing integrated SC settings due to two aspects: (1) these studies are based on the assumption that workers' utilities are independently and identically distributed and follow a stationary distribution like Gaussian, which does not hold in integrated SC;(2) their approaches fail to provide personalized privacy preservation for different workers. Motivated by these limitations, we closely investigate the heterogeneous utility and personalized privacy requirement in integrated SC and propose an Online Personalized Privacy-preserving Selection framework (OPPS). In this framework, we present an online selection policy that balances the exploration-exploitation trade-off given heterogeneous utilities and develop a built-in privacy policy that ensures differential privacy guarantee. We then demonstrate that our framework effectively addresses the trade-off by deriving a sublinear, privacy-related upper bound on regret that scales as O(√T). Extensive numerical simulations based on real-world drone datasets are conducted to validate the effectiveness of our framework compared with state-of-the-art approaches. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Automatic Repeat Request Design in AoI-Aware Broadcast With Heterogeneous Direct and Relay-Assisted Users

This paper investigates the design of automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocols in age of information (AoI)-aware broadcast systems with heterogeneous users, including both direct and relay-assisted users. In this setup, a direct user receives status updates directly via a single-hop link, while a relay-assisted user can receive status updates through either a direct single-hop link or a two-hop relay-assisted link. While ARQ is commonly used to ensure reliable transmission in error-prone wireless networks, previous studies suggest that ARQ does not improve the average AoI in single-hop networks. However, its impact on AoI in systems with relays, particularly those involving heterogeneous users, remains unclear. We address this gap by analyzing the average AoI under different ARQ strategies, introducing a transmission limit k ≥ 0 at the relay. Here, k = 0, k = 1, and k > 1 correspond to non-relay, non-ARQ-at-relay, and truncated-ARQ-at-relay strategies, respectively. Utilizing a unified Markov chain framework that models the transmission processes for each user type, we derive the theoretical average AoI. Our results show that the direct user benefits most from non-relay and non-ARQ strategies, similar to single-hop systems. In contrast, the relay-assisted user achieves optimal performance with truncated-ARQ-at-relay, leveraging both direct and relay-assisted links. For the overall system, applying a non-ARQ-at-relay approach strikes a balance in AoI between the direct and relay-assisted users, leading to a more stable and lower system-wide average AoI. © 2014 IEEE.

Recent studies have achieved remarkable results for action recognition with human skeletal data by utilizing graph convolutional models. Traditional approaches typically aggregate local spatio-temporal information bottom-up to form a single spatio-temporal global understanding. However, this method may fail to achieve multi-location perception for fine-grained action capture and may struggle to model subactions due to their varying durations. To solve these challenges, we design a Distributed Spatio-temporal Perception (DSP) module that innovatively treats each joint as an independent perception unit, performing joint-wise distributed multi-location perception in both spatial and temporal dimensions. In addition, we introduce an Anchor Pose-driven Subaction Encoding (APSE) module, which enhances informative clues for subaction reasoning through identifying the correlations between anchor pose and subactions formed by integrating distributed spatio-temporal perception features. Based on the above work, we propose a Joint-wise Distributed Perception Graph Convolutional Network (JDP-GCN). The experiments on three widely used datasets: NTU RGB+D 60, NTU RGB+D 120, and NW-UCLA, demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Even though numerous ICT-based solutions have been put forth for the detection of accidents and rescue missions, they often suffer from compatibility issues with different vehicles and are accompanied by high costs. This paper introduces a cutting-edge intelligent system designed for accident detection and rescue, mirroring human cognitive functions through integrating the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence. A specialized kit for IoT has been created to identify accidents and gather comprehensive incident-related data, such as pressure, position, gravitational force, and speed. This information is then transmitted to the cloud for processing. A deep learning model is implemented in the cloud environment to verify the IoT module's output and activate the rescue mechanism when an accident is detected. The DL module, employing ensemble transfer learning with dynamic weights, aims to minimize false detection rates. Because there isn't an appropriate dataset available, a personalized dataset is generated from diverse online videos. To validate the proposed method, a comparative analysis is conducted on Yolo V4. Experimental results indicate that Yolo V4 outperforms, achieving training, validation, and test accuracies of 98.2% each. To assess the system's real-world applicability, it undergoes validation using a robot car model. Copyright © 2025 KSII.
