The study investigates battery degradation under high C-rates and subzero temperatures, analyzing temperature gradients (ΔT/Δt) and differential temperature rises (ΔT) on 21700 lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA) battery. The research findings identifies maximum ΔT at charging rates of 2.5C and 3C, reaching 24.6°C and 29.96°C, respectively, at an ambient temperature of -10°C. At -15°C, charging rate of 2C resulted in ΔT of 20.9°C. Moreover, the voltage dip during fast charging at subzero temperatures increases with lower ambient temperatures and higher C-rates. Comparative analysis underscores anode as the most heated part, exhibiting steeper ΔT/Δt curves. Although the battery management system (BMS) may regulate the total temperature rise within safe operating limits, however, often ΔT/Δt may cause accelerated battery degradation and thermal runaway condition, especially during dynamic charging/discharging conditions. Therefore, it is imperative to monitor battery ΔT/Δt, rather than only ΔT to ensure reduced accelerated degradation and thermal safety. © 2024 IEEE.

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) are at the forefront of next-generation energy storage technologies, promising enhanced safety, energy density, and longevity compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. However, managing the thermal behavior of SSBs during charging is critical to ensuring their safe and reliable operation. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of the thermal characteristics of SSBs under various charging conditions, based on laboratory experiments conducted in controlled environments. The study specifically evaluates the thermal performance of SSBs in comparison to traditional lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA) batteries, with an emphasis on their potential application in e-mobility. The insights gained from this research are expected to inform the development of advanced thermal management strategies, contributing to the design of safer and more efficient solid-state battery technologies for e-mobility applications. © 2025 IEEE.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the correlation between the regional safety index, urban space, and time series data, to analyze the causes of vulnerable areas by subdividing the regional safety index, and to derive solutions. Public data was used for analysis, and spatial data such as police stations, security bells, and security facilities, and time-series and spatial composite data such as the number of police reports by time zone and floating population were used. In addition, Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, the city to be analyzed, is a large city with a population of over 1 million. It is located near Seoul and has a very high floating population as there are various landmarks, such as Samsung Electronics headquarters and Suwon Hwaseong, in the city. Therefore, it is an excellent city to analyze multiple characteristics that are difficult to obtain in other cities. To obtain various insights, we analyzed multiple methods, and in particular, techniques such as exploratory data analysis, visualization analysis, and machine learning were used. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents an overview of on-board conductive charger topologies for electric vehicles (EVs). Battery packs in electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (EVs/PHEVs) need frequent energy refills to fulfil their duty cycles and overcome the range anxiety of vehicle owners. Due to the limited availability of fast charging infrastructures, all automotive manufacturers prefer an on-board battery charger in their vehicles. However, there are power level limitations for these chargers because of the weight, space and cost constraints. On-board charging systems can be either conductive or inductive. This paper reviews the topologies that are involved in conductive charging only. Globally, all automotive companies provide levels 1 and 2 for residential charging of vehicles. Single- and two-stage power converter topologies are summarised with their limitations. Furthermore, the current trends in the DC-DC converters for the two-stage conversion battery charger topologies are also outlined. This paper provides an overview of various topologies and configurations involved in EV charging with their limitations. © 2023 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Digital microfluidic biochips have emerged as a promising alternative for various laboratory procedures in biochemistry, such as drug discovery and DNA sequencing. A recent generation of digital biochips uses a micro-electrode-dot-array (MEDA) architecture, which provides finer controllability of droplets and seamlessly integrates microelectronics and microfluidics. To simplify the wiring design of such biochips, all microelectrodes and their control registers are daisy-chained together. Therefore, the ability to both identify faults in the chain and tolerate them is required in MEDA biochips. In this study, a new daisy-chain design approach is proposed, integrating a built-in self-repair scheme that can automatically detect faults and correct them. Moreover, an efficient test generation method that requires only a small number of test vectors is proposed to achieve 100% fault coverage without degrading the electrodes. The proposed self-repair scheme can be used in both offline and online modes. Experimental results show that detection and repair can be carried out for various types of faults that can occur in daisy chains. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper proposes a comprehensive methodology for Field-Oriented Control (FOC) with parameter variation analysis for Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (IPMSM). The modeling approach for an IPMSM is first presented, followed by a step-by-step procedure for designing a vector-controlled strategy. The formulation is based on a dq-rotating reference frame aligned with the rotor shaft position. A key distinction of this methodology from traditional approaches is that the current controller is designed in the time domain based on desired time constants, while the speed control is formulated within a frequency response domain framework. The proposed hybrid approach enables accurate tuning of the Proportional-Integrator (PI) controllers for both current and speed control loops. Additionally, a parameter variation analysis is conducted to enhance the proposed methodology. The validity region for the design procedure is presented, ensuring that for any wide speed variation of the machine, loop gains are properly tuned. One of the main advantages of the proposed methodology is that it provides a fast, reliable, and accurate technique for implementing IPMSM drive systems. Results from a Controller Hardware-in-the-Loop (C-HIL) setup with an external microcontroller are presented. The comprehensive design approach is validated under two different IPMSM parameter sets, demonstrating its effectiveness.

The health and performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) degrade significantly during applications at sub-zero temperatures. Due to low temperatures, various chemical changes, such as the freezing of the electrolyte, make it difficult for the battery to provide high discharge rates. With the increasing application of high-power LIBs, especially in automotive applications, a detailed understanding of the impact of fast discharging of LIBs under sub-zero temperature is very crucial. Therefore, this study investigates the battery degradation under high discharge rates and sub-zero temperatures on 21700 Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminum oxide (NCA) battery. The battery was found to lose 34% capacity during 2C discharge, compared to 20.25% and 15% capacity loss during 1C and 0.5C discharge, respectively, at -20°C. The results indicate that with lower ambient temperatures and high discharge rates, a voltage sag appears in the initial stage of the discharge cycle due to rapid increase in internal impedances and decreased ionic conductivity in the battery, leading to accelerated battery aging and capacity fade. This voltage dip serves as a comparative metric for assessing the total usable capacity of the battery. The outcome of the research study reveals the actual performance of LIBs in automotive applications compared to its nominal performance claimed by manufacturers.
