Using semantic technologies the materialization of implicit given facts that can be derived from a dataset is an important task performed by a reasoner. With respect to the answering time for queries and the growing amount of available data, scaleable solutions that are able to process large datasets are needed. In previous work we described a rule-based reasoner implementation that uses massively parallel hardware to derive new facts based on a given set of rules. This implementation was limited by the size of processable input data as well as on the number of used parallel hardware devices. In this paper we introduce further concepts for a workload partitioning and distribution to overcome this limitations. Based on the introduced concepts, additional levels of parallelization can be proposed that benefit from the use of multiple parallel devices. Furthermore, we introduce a concept to reduce the amount of invalid triple derivations like duplicates. We evaluate our concepts by applying different rulesets to the real-world DBPedia dataset as well as to the synthetic Lehigh University benchmark ontology (LUBM) with up to 1.1 billion triples. The evaluation shows that our implementation scales in a linear way and outperforms current state of the art reasoner with respect to the throughput achieved on a single computing node. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Test automation is a widely-used approach to reduce the cost of manual software testing. However, if it is not planned or conducted properly, automated testing would not necessarily be more cost effective than manual testing. Deciding what parts of a given System Under Test (SUT) should be tested in an automated fashion and what parts should remain manual is a frequently-asked and challenging question for practitioner testers. In this study, we propose a search-based approach for deciding what parts of a given SUT should be tested automatically to gain the highest Return On Investment (ROI). This work is the first systematic approach for this problem, and significance of our approach is that it considers automation in the entire testing process (i.e., from test-case design, to test scripting, to test execution, and test-result evaluation). The proposed approach has been applied in an industrial setting in the context of a software product used in the oil and gas industry in Canada. Among the results of the case study is that, when planned and conducted properly using our decision-support approach, test automation provides the highest ROI. In this study, we show that if automation decision is taken effectively, test-case design, test execution, and test evaluation can result in about 307%, 675%, and 41% ROI in 10 rounds of using automated test suites.

In this work, we study the performance of the maximum likelihood decoding (MLD) approach in error-resilient video sequences to establish the performance improvement of this method compared to well-known error concealment approaches. In particular, we consider various interactions between error resilience coding and error concealment/correction. The error resilience methods under consideration include random intra macroblock updating and weighted error resilience. For error concealment/correction, we consider (i) the frame copy (FC), (ii) spatio-temporal boundary matching error concealments (STBMA), and (iii) MLD error correction. Our experimental results show that the best performance is achieved when the MLD interacts with weighted error resilience. Together, they yield, on average, about a 2 dB gain over using FC error concealment with weighted error resilience and a 1 dB gain over STBMA with identical error resilience. Furthermore, MLD with error resilience can be more than 10 dB better than FC without error resilience in certain cases. © 2014 IEEE.

The main aim of my doctoral research is to create a comprehensive set of well-accepted consistency rules for UML diagrams that can be found in the literature, in reference textbooks or in the UML standard. Moreover, an important part of that aim will be the validation of the gathered UML consistency rules. This research will provide to the academic community and industrial organizations an extensive and detailed new base of knowledge about UML consistency rules which is a paramount topic in UML context. Therefore it will represent a sound starting point for all the researchers and designers involved in UML consistency. Copyright 2014 ACM.

Context: The Unified Modeling Language (UML), with its 14 different diagram types, is the de-facto standard modeling language for object-oriented modeling and documentation. Since the various UML diagrams describe different aspects of one, and only one, software under development, they are not independent but strongly depend on each other in many ways. In other words, the UML diagrams describing a software product must be consistent. Inconsistencies between these diagrams may be a source of faults in software systems. It is therefore paramount that these inconsistencies be detected, analyzed and hopefully fixed. Objective: The aim of this article is to deliver a comprehensive summary of UML consistency rules as they are described in the literature to date to obtain an extensive and detailed overview of the current research in this area. Method: We performed a Systematic Mapping Study by following well-known guidelines. We selected 95 primary studies from a search with seven search engines performed in December 2012. Results: Different results are worth mentioning. First it appears that researchers tend to discuss very similar consistency rules, over and over again. Most rules are horizontal (98.10%) and syntactic (88.21%). The most used diagrams are the class diagram (71.58%), the sequence diagram (47.37%) and the state machine diagram (42.11%). Conclusion: The fact that many rules are duplicated in primary studies confirms the need for a well-accepted list of consistency rules. This paper is a first step in this direction. Results indicate that much more work is needed to develop consistency rules for all 14 UML diagrams, in all dimensions of consistency (e.g., semantic and syntactic on the one hand, horizontal, vertical and evolution on the other hand). The main objective of this paper is to study and analyze the power supply stage of a series-series (SS) fixed-frequency inductive power transfer (IPT) system, in order to suggest effective soft switching techniques to improve its performance. Because of the characteristics of the system, zero voltage switching (ZVS) operation was used and three control strategies were compared: phase-shift (PS) control, asymmetrical duty cycle (ADC) control and optimal asymmetrical voltage cancellation (o_AVC) control. The o_AVC control is found to be more efficient for this application. Additionally, this paper presents an inductive power transfer transformer (IPTT) prototype that was built in the laboratory, which helped validate the theoretical analysis and simulation results with practical tests. The plots and circuit simulations were obtained from MATLAB and SIMULINK respectively.

In order to enable the semantic web as well as other time critical semantic applications, scaleable reasoning mechanisms are indispensable. To address this issue, in this paper we propose a rule-based reasoning algorithm which explores the highly parallel hardware of modern processors. In contrast to other approaches of parallel reasoning, our algorithm works with rules that can be defined depending on the application scenario and thus is able to apply different semantics. Furthermore we show how vector-based operations can be used to implement a performant match algorithm. We evaluate our approach by applying the ρdf, RDFS and pD∗ rule sets to different data sets and compare our results with other recent work. The evaluation shows that our approach is up to 9 times faster depending on the rule set and the used ontology and is able for example to apply the ρdf rules to an ontology with 2.2 million triples (and 1.3 million inferred triples) in less than 6 seconds.
