Configurations of hardware and software parameters play a major role in determining the performance of an application program. With increasingly complex systems, the task of finding the optimal configuration parameters becomes very difficult When a performance analyst needs to find the best hardware and software settings to run an application, the traditional approach of trying different combinations, such as trial-and-error and tuning one factor at-a-time, might not lead to optimal results. We present a methodology for applying Design of Experiments (DOE) techniques to vary the software and hardware factors in a systematic manner. We show how to use a Plackett and Burman (PB) analysis to find the main factors and then a full-factorial design followed by Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the F-test to statistically quantify the effects of the main parameters and interactions, This systematic approach reduces the time and cost needed to select the software and hardware configurations to optimize a software application on a new or existing platform. We demonstrate with two case studies how this approach can be applied to software-hardware co-optimization. After using the proposed approach, nearly 8 times improvement in response time was seen for one of the in-house benchmarks, and 23.6% improvement in throughput was seen for SPECjvm2008, as compared to the baseline one-factor at-a-time approach. In all experiments, this systematic approach outperforms the traditional approach. We hope to share our excitement about the opportunities DOE provides to reduce the time taken for performing hardware and software tuning to improve application performance and human productivity.

This paper presents the work undertaken so far in the formulation of a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) for research in Systems of Systems engineering in the EU. The T-AREA-SoS project is introduced to provide a context, together with a section on Drivers for Change which the SRA needs to take into account. The strategy and process for the generation of the SRA is described, followed by details of outputs to date and the potential benefits it is believed would accrue from the implementation of the SRA. © 2013 IEEE.

Systems of Systems engineering constitutes a major challenge for the 21st Century and research into this topic has become an imperative. The Support Action, T-AREA-SoS has been initiated by the European Commission to develop a research agenda in Systems of Systems (SoS) that will inform future investment in this area. Through an extensive consultation and review, a number of SoS capability gaps have been identified. Through structuring and subsequent consultation, these have been developed into twelve research themes the detailed areas of which are mapped to the three SoS characteristics of control, evolution, and emergent behaviour. A framework is presented through which researchers can develop a research campaign in SoS.

Despite over two decades of research, high false alarm rates, large trace sizes and high processing times remain among the key issues in host-based anomaly intrusion detection systems. In an attempt to reduce the false alarm rate and processing time while increasing the detection rate, this paper presents a novel anomaly detection technique based on semantic interactions of system calls. The key concept is to represent system calls as states of kernel modules, analyze the state interactions, and identify anomalies by comparing the probabilities of occurrences of states in normal and anomalous traces. In addition, the proposed technique allows a visual understanding of system behaviour, and hence a more informed decision making. We evaluated this technique on Linux based programs of UNM datasets and a new modern Firefox dataset. We created the Firefox dataset on Linux using contemporary test suites and hacking techniques. The results show that our technique yields fewer false alarms and can handle large traces with smaller (or comparable) processing times compared against the existing techniques for the host based anomaly intrusion detection systems.

The large-scale Systems of Systems (SoS) are there to improve the provision of societal services. These are driven by global drivers such as population growth, aging, food security, energy security and climate change. However, a considerable number of SoS projects resulted in failures, causing detrimental economic impact. This paper presents a set of preliminary results from an European Commission (EC) funded project called T-AREA-SoS (Trans-Atlantic Research and Education Agenda on Systems of Systems). The primary purpose of T-AREA-SoS is to provide input to EC's €80 billion Horizon 2020 research programme in formulating a Strategic Research Agenda for Systems of Systems engineering (SoSE) that spans American and European activities. An initial set of prioritised SoSE research elements derived from an online survey are discussed from an economic and societal stance using examples from heterogeneous sectors such as transport, energy and manufacturing.

The need for publishing maps in secure digital format, especially guarantees data integrity which motivated us to propose a scheme that detects and locates modification data with high accuracy while ensuring exact recovery of the original content. In particular, using fragile watermarking algorithm based on reversible manner to embed hidden data in 2D vector map for each spatial features. In this paper, a reversible data-hiding scheme is explored based on the idea of difference expansion with Manhattan distances. A set of invertible integer mappings is defined to extract Manhattan distances from coordinates and the hidden data are embedded by modifying the differences between the adjacent distances. Experiments results show that the proposed scheme has good performance in term invisibility and tamper modification ability. The scheme could detect modification data such addition and deletion some features, and exactly recovery the original content of the 2D vector map.

Context: A considerable portion of the software systems today are adopted in the embedded control domain. Embedded control software deals with controlling a physical system, and as such models of physical characteristics become part of the embedded control software. Objective: Due to the evolution of system properties and increasing complexity, faults can be left undetected in these models of physical characteristics. Therefore, their accuracy must be verified at runtime. Traditional runtime verification techniques that are based on states/events in software execution are inadequate in this case. The behavior suggested by models of physical characteristics cannot be mapped to behavioral properties of software. Moreover, implementation in a general-purpose programming language makes these models hard to locate and verify. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel approach to perform runtime verification of models of physical characteristics in embedded control software. Method: The development of an approach for runtime verification of models of physical characteristics and the application of the approach to two industrial case studies from the printing systems domain. Results: This paper presents a novel approach to specify models of physical characteristics using a domain-specific language, to define monitors that detect inconsistencies by exploiting redundancy in these models, and to realize these monitors using an aspect-oriented approach. We complement runtime verification with static analysis to verify the composition of domain-specific models with the control software written in a general-purpose language. Conclusions: The presented approach enables runtime verification of implemented models of physical characteristics to detect inconsistencies in these models, as well as broken hardware components and wear and tear of hardware in the physical system. Two stages are commonly employed in modern algorithms of image/video quality assessment (QA): (1) a local frequency-based decomposition, and (2) block-based statistical comparisons between the frequency coefficients of the reference and distorted images. This paper presents a performance analysis of and techniques for accelerating these stages. We specifically analyze and accelerate one representative QA algorithm recently developed by the authors (Larson and Chandler, 2010). We identify the bottlenecks from the abovementioned stages, and we present methods of acceleration using integral images, inline expansion, a GPGPU implementation, and other code modifications. We show how a combination of these approaches can yield a speedup of 47x. © 2012 IEEE.
