We consider geographically distributed data centers forming a collectively managed cloud computing system hosting multiple applications, each subject to Service Level Agreements (SLA). The Service Level Agreements for each application require the response time of a certain percentile of the input requests to be less than a specified value, with the non-conforming requests being charged a penalty. We present a novel approach of heuristic-based request scheduling at each server, in each of the geographically distributed data centers, to globally minimize the penalty charged to the cloud computing system. We evaluate two variants of our heuristic-based approach, one based on the simulated annealing method of neighborhood searches and another based on gi-FIFO scheduling, which has been analytically proven to be the best schedule for percentile goals in a single machine, multi-class problem. We also compare our approaches with First In First Out (FIFO) and Weighted Round Robin (WRR) scheduling policies.

Data storage technologies have been recognized as one of the major dimensions of information management along with the network infrastructure and applications. The prosperity of cloud computing requires the migration from server-attached storage to network-based distributed storage. Along with variant advantages, distributed storage also poses new challenges in creating a secure and reliable data storage and access facility. The data security in cloud is one of the challenges to be addressed before the novel pay-as-you-go business model can be accepted and applied widely. Concerns are raised from both insecure/unreliable service providers and potential malicious users. In this article, we analyze the integrity vulnerability existing in the current cloud storage platforms and show the problem of repudiation. A novel non-repudiation (NR) protocol specifically designed in the context of cloud computing environment is proposed. We have also discussed the robustness of the NR protocol against typical attacks in the network environments.

The AAAI-10 workshop program was held on July 11-12, 2010, at the Westin Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta, Georgia. The workshop program included 13 workshops covering a wide range of topics in artificial intelligence. There were several presentations on particular formalisms for combining the levels of planning from the perspectives of classical planning, motion planning, POMDPs, search-based planning, and temporal logic-based constraints. Henry Lieberman from Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Laboratory presented work developing a platform for knowledge acquisition and usage from expert users, built upon experience with eliciting information from nonexperts in a collaborative manner. The objective of the AAAI Workshop on Goal-Directed Autonomy (GDA) was to encourage discussion and novel contributions on intelligent agents that can self-select their goals. Jeremy Baxter from QinetiQ focused on user interaction, while Nick Hawes described a goal-directed reasoning framework for controlling a mobile robot.

A Tester-Assisted Methodology for Test Redundancy Detection

Test redundancy detection reduces test maintenance costs and also ensures the integrity of test suites. One of the most widely used approaches for this purpose is based on coverage information. In a recent work, we have shown that although this information can be useful in detecting redundant tests, it may suffer from large number of false-positive errors, that is, a test case being identified as redundant while it is really not. In this paper, we propose a semiautomated methodology to derive a reduced test suite from a given test suite, while keeping the fault detection effectiveness unchanged. To evaluate the methodology, we apply the mutation analysis technique to measure the fault detection effectiveness of the reduced test suite of a real Java project. The results confirm that the proposed manual interactive inspection process leads to a reduced test suite with the same fault detection ability as the original test suite.

Constraint solving has become an established approach for the handling of complex combinatorial and scheduling problems. We present a constraint solver framework that enables the interchange of most solver aspects through its extensive modular design. Here, we especially focus on the search protocol design. The system is compared to the renowned ScREAMER approach and shown to improve performance for several benchmark cases. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Measurement and detection of redundancy in test suites attempt to achieve test minimization which in turn can help reduce test maintenance costs, and to also ensure the integrity of test cases. Test suite reduction based on coverage information has been discussed in many previous works. However, the applications of such techniques on real test suites and realistic measurements of redundancy have not yet been experimented thoroughly. To address such a need, we formulate in this paper two experimental metrics for coverage-based measurement of test redundancy in the context of JUnit test suites. We then evaluate the approach by measuring the redundancy of four real Java projects. The automated measures are compared with manual redundancy decisions (performed through an inspection by a tester). The results and lessons learned are interesting and somewhat surprising in that besides they show usefulness of coverage information, they present a set of shortcomings (in terms of precision) for the simplistic coverage-based redundancy measurement approach as discussed in the literature. The root-cause analysis of our observations identify several key lessons learned which should help the testing researchers and practitioners in devising better techniques for more precise measurement of test redundancy.

A stock market data processing system that can handle high data volumes at low latencies is critical to market makers. Such systems play a critical role in algorithmic trading, risk analysis, market surveillance, and many other related areas. We show that such a system can be built with general-purpose middleware and run on commodity hardware. The middleware we use is IBM System S, which has been augmented with transport technology from IBM WebSphere MQ Low Latency Messaging. Using eight commodity x86 blades connected with Ethernet and Infiniband, this system can achieve 80 μsec average latency at 3 times the February 2008 options market data rate and 206 μsec average latency at 15 times the February 2008 rate. Maintenance of articular cartilage's functional mechanical properties ultimately depends on the balance between the extracellular matrix component biosynthesis, degradation, and loss. A variety of factors are known to modulate the rate of cartilage matrix synthesis (e.g., growth factors and stress/strain environment). In the present study, we develop an integrated mathematical model that quantifies biological processes within cartilage tissue modulated by insulin-like growth factors (IGFs). Specifically, the model includes IGF transport through a deforming porous media, competitive binding to binding proteins and cell receptors, and matrix macromolecule biosynthesis - particularly glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). These newly synthesized matrix molecules are then able to modify the material properties of cartilage. The model is used to investigate the effect of synovial fluid IGF-I concentration on cartilage homeostasis. The results presented here suggest that GAG production can be rapidly "switched on" when the concentration of IGF-I reaches a certain threshold, while it is predicted that high receptor concentration leads to heterogeneous matrix production. As for the combined effect of IGF-I and mechanical loading on biosynthesis, the current model predicts that a loading regime with high strain magnitude (e.g., 10%) can achieve a synergistic effect on matrix protein production. Furthermore, dynamic loading is seen to promote spatial homogeneous GAG production. © 2009 ASCE.

Realizing self-managing systems poses several development and operational challenges. Reusable software frameworks assist in addressing these challenges by utilizing appropriate patterns, and also providing essential runtime services for self-managing systems. This paper presents the StarMX framework, designed for building self-managing Java-based applications. It is a generic framework based on standards and well-established principles, and supports common tasks in the development of such systems. StarMX facilitates creating the management closed loop using various mechanisms such as action policies. The framework architecture and its utilization process, along with an example of its application are presented in this paper. Moreover, quality attributes and autonomic characteristics of the proposed framework are discussed.

Adaptive software is a closed-loop system which aims at adjusting itself in different situations at runtime. This paper looks at adaptation as changes in the context of dynamic software evolution, and proposes a conceptual model for these changes based on Activity Theory. This model consists of a hierarchy of activities making changes, and the objectives motivating these changes. This model is an attempt towards establishing a formal framework for designing adaptive software systems. While the proposed model is applicable to any type of adaptation, at different levels of granularity of various software systems, the paper focuses only on fine-grained adaptation changes. As a case study, a mission-critical e-commerce system, TPC-W, isused to apply the proposed model and evaluate the effectiveness of fine-grained adaptation changes. The conducted set of experiments aims at evaluating self-optimizing and self-configuring adaptation activities performed through several fine-grained actions such as service-level upgrading/degrading.
