This paper considers the task of software test case generation from a large space of values of input parameters. The purpose of the paper is to create a model of software input space with constraints among parameters to serve as a basis of testing. We suggest a procedure to create a directed graph model, where paths through the graph represent all valid (and only valid) input combinations. The procedure accommodates an arbitrary set of dependencies among parameters. It starts from a simple linear graph and sequentially modifies this graph for each dependency between parameters. Modifications include subgraph splitting and elimination of dead nodes and edges. A complete example of a system with six input parameters and five dependencies among them is presented to illustrate the application of the procedure. Applicability of the approach for different types of parameters and dependencies is addressed.

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, in cooperation with Stanford University's department of computer Science, was pleased to present the 2009 Spring Symposium Series, held Monday through Wednesday, March 23-25, 2009, at Stanford University. The titles of the nine symposia were Agents That Learn from Human Teachers, Benchmarking of Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning Systems, Experimental Design for Real- World Systems, Human Behavior Modeling, Intelligent Event Processing, Intelligent Narrative Technologies II, Learning by Reading and Learning to Read, Social Semantic Web: Where Web 2.0 Meets Web 3.0, and Technosocial Predictive Analytics. The goal of the Agents That Learn from Human Teachers symposium was to investigate how we can enable software and robotics agents to leam from real-time interaction with an everyday human partner. The aim of the Benchmarking of Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning Systems symposium was to initiate the development of a problem repository in the field of qualitative spatial and temporal reasoning and identify a graded set of challenges for future midterm and long-term research. The Experimental Design symposium discussed the challenges of evaluating AI systems. The Human Behavior Modeling symposium explored reasoning methods for understanding various aspects of human behavior, especially in the context of designing intelligent systems that interact with humans. The Intelligent Event Processing symposium discussed the need for more Al-based approaches in event pro-cessing and defined a kind of research agenda for the field, coined as intelligent complex event processing (iCEP). The Intelligent Narrative Technologies IIAAAI symposium discussed innovations, progress, and novel techniques in the research domain. The Learning by Reading and Learning to Read symposium explored two aspects of making natural language texts semantically accessible to, and processable by, machines. The Social Semantic

Performance analysis of digital loudspeaker arrays

Digital loudspeaker arrays currently are based on small moving-coil loudspeakers to reconstruct acoustic signals from binary audio streams. An overview of significant performance issues for such systems is given to explain frequency response and loudspeaker discrete transition rates achieved with digital data. Detailed simulations provide comparisons for a 32-loudspeaker DLA with similar arrangements of loudspeakers driven by analog signals. These tests produce novel results for electric power requirements and array sensitivity, concluding that these two systems achieve comparable performance.

In a previous work, we reported and experimented with a stress testing methodology to detect network traffic-related Real-Time (RT) faults in Distributed Real-Time Systems (DRTSs) based on the design UML models. The stress methodology, referred to as Time-Shifting Stress Test Methodology (TSSTM), aimed at increasing chances of discovering RT faults originating from network traffic overloads in DRTSs. The TSSTM uses the UML 2.0 model of a System Under Test (SUT), augmented with timing information, and is based on an analysis of the control flow in UML sequence diagrams. In order to devise deterministic test requirements (from time point of view) that yield the maximum stress test scenario in terms of network traffic in a SUT, the TSSTM methodology requires that the timing information of messages in sequence diagrams is available and as precise as possible. In reality, however, the timing information of messages is not always available and precise. As we demonstrate using a case study in this work, the effectiveness of the stress test cases generated by TSSTM is very sensitive to such time uncertainty. In other words, TSSTM might generate imprecise and not necessarily maximum stressing test cases in the presence of such time uncertainty and, thus, it might not be very effective in revealing RT faults. To address the above limitation of TSSTM, we present in this article a modified testing methodology which can be used to stress test systems when the timing information of messages is imprecise or unpredictable. The stress test results of applying the new test methodology to a prototype DRTS indicate that, in the presence of uncertainty in timing information of messages, the new methodology is more effective in detecting RT faults when compared to our previous methodology (i.e., TSSTM) and also test cases based on an operational profile.

One of the important and effort-consuming aspects in the development of real-time (RT) systems is the analysis of RT job arrival times, i.e., finding the time instant(s) or time interval(s) when tasks are allowed to start. The analysis of arrival times becomes complex when the number of RT tasks under analysis grows and also when RT tasks have different arrival patterns, e.g., periodic. We present in this paper an automatable UML-based arrival time analysis formalism for RT systems. To show the applicability and effectiveness of our formalism, an example arrival time analysis using the formalism is presented.

A method of using Markov chain techniques for combinatorial test case selection is presented. The method can be used for statistical and coverage testing of many software programs, in particular for scientific computational software. The central point of the approach is modeling of dependencies between input parameters. Several different types of such dependencies are considered and models for each situation are created. Based on these models, test cases can be automatically generated and executed. Results of using the JUMBL tool for analyzing models and generating test cases are described.

Inspired by Weber's Law, this paper proposes a simple, yet very powerful and robust local descriptor, Weber Local Descriptor (WLD). It is based on the fact that human perception of a pattern depends on not only the change of a stimulus (such as sound, lighting, et al.) but also the original intensity of the stimulus. Specifically, WLD consists of two components: its differential excitation and orientation. A differential excitation is a function of the ratio between two terms: One is the relative intensity differences of its neighbors against a current pixel;the other is the intensity of the current pixel. An orientation is the gradient orientation of the current pixel. For a given image, we use the differential excitation and the orientation components to construct a concatenated WLD histogram feature. Experimental results on Brodatz textures show that WLD impressively outperforms the other classical descriptors (e.g., Gabor). Especially, experimental results on face detection show a promising performance. Although we train only one classifier based on WLD features, the classifier obtains a comparable performance to state-of-the-art methods on MIT+CMU frontal face test set, AR face dataset and CMU profile test set.

software change prediction plays a key role in software maintenance and evolution. It is primarily utilized to know "where" the most change-prone entities are, and how the change will be propagated through a system. The results of the prediction are used to plan different tasks in maintenance and evolution, such as re-factoring operation. This paper argues that knowing "when" the changes may happen can give more insight to managers and developers for planning the maintenance activities. To address this issue, a Neural Network-based Temporal Change Prediction (NNTCP) framework is proposed. Such a novel framework determines "where" the changes would be applied (as hot spots), and then adds time dimension to predict "when" it may occur. As a proof of concept, the NNTCP framework is applied to Mozilla as a large-scale open source software. We provide a short discussion on obtained prediction results.
