High-level reusability has been achieved in software architecture using design patterns. In this paper, two different applications are presented using design patterns in the system analysis and design cycle. It is concluded that software development using design patterns greatly reduces the design time and reduces the risk of design error.

The aim of the experiment presented in this paper is to present an insight into the evaluation of the potential benefits of introducing a function clone detection technology in an industrial software development process. To take advantage of function clone detection, two modifications to the software development process are presented. Our experiment consists of evaluating the impact that these proposed changes would have had on a specific software system if they had been applied over a 3 year period (involving 10000 person-months), where 6 subsequent versions of the software under study were released. The software under study is a large telecommunication system. In total 89 million lines of code have been analyzed. A first result showed that, against our expectations, a significant number of clones are being removed from the system over time. However, this effort is insufficient to prevent the growth of the overall number of clones in the system. In this context the first process change would have added value. We have also found that the second process change would have provided programmers with a significant number of opportunities for correcting problems before customers experienced them. This result shows a potential for improving the software system quality and customer satisfaction

A basic study on power storage capacitor systems

He joined Nippon Atomic Industry Group Co. the same year and studied at Argonne National Laboratories (U.S.) in 1964–65. He left the company and established the Okamura Laboratory Inc. in 1987. He is engaged in R&D of radiation measurements electronic circuits computer applications and software. Member of the Japan Nuclear Society and the Electrical Society.

Storage batteries or pumped hydraulic power stations have been used to store electric energy. However, there are problems with storage batteries, e.g., long charging time, limited cycle life, low Coulomb efficiency, and inaccurate residual power meters. Because of these problems, practical power applications have not been achieved. To solve these problems, a complex system of capacitors and electronic circuits called the ECS (Energy Capacitor System) is proposed. The capacitor part of the ECS is a group of electric double-layer capacitors of increased energy density. The circuits part is built around switching regulators. Although the capacitors alone are not capable of delivering stable output, the accompanying circuits compensate for various characteristics throughout the charge and discharge cycle. This combination of capacitors and electronic circuits increases the energy density by about 16 times that of the conventional electric double-layer capacitors, close to the level of lead-acid batteries but with lower output resistance and better voltage stability. The ECS inherently features short charging time, very long cycle life, and good Coulomb efficiency. The cells are completely sealed and made from materials which are not harmful to the environment.

Adjustable speed drive systems using AC‐machines are often fed by voltage‐source inverters. This paper presents a new strategy to control the line‐side converter. State‐space and fuzzy methods are combined to achieve a control system which includes control limits and the aspects of safety. Experiments with a drive system (30 kW) demonstrate the dynamic and steady‐state behaviour of the control. Copyright © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The concept of a simulation environment combines different aspects of the simulation process into one complete powerful tool. The environment should provide the necessary state-of-the-art advances and concepts that a modeler may require during the simulation development and execution process. The "environment" requirements must address the end user needs while minimizing the necessity of learning a new language. The requirements must specify the useful features, independent of different platforms and implementation languages. Hence the opportunity exists for standardization of environments. The paper opens a discussion on challenges and rewards awaiting the simulation community with the advent of a standard environment.

Classical signal processing functions such as spectrum analysis, correlation, convolution, filtering, mixing, and noise reduction can be performed optically using optical signal processing devices and systems. The signal media, i.e., light waves, not only have a higher information-carrying capacity than electrical wires, but may pass through each other without interference, thus providing an increased interconnection capacity. This property facilitates improved communication and ease of reconfiguration between processing elements in highly parallel optical computing architectures.1

He has worked at Boeing Commercial Aircraft Company and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Since 1985 he has been at Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division (NSWCC). From 1987 to 1990 he was in charge of quality assurance configuration management and reliability for Aegis (SPY-1 and Mk-99) microwave tubes. He currently is in the Radar System Branch at NSWCC. He is a member of ASQC and ASME. His areas of interest include the use of statistics in process improvement efforts and objectively rating and rewarding suppliers for better quality. Bruce E. Stuckman:holds a Ph.D. degree in systems engineering from Oakland University where he also obtained M.S. and B.S. degrees in electrical and computer engineering. In 1992 Dr. Stuckman obtained his J.D. from the University of Louisville where he graduated cum laude. He is currently an associate in the patent and computer law department of Brooks & Kushman a law firm specializing in intellectual property and technology related causes. Prior to this he was an associate professor of both electrical engineering at the University of Louisville and a member of the Research Advisory Board of the South Central Bell Telecommunications Research Center. Dr. Stuckman is the author of over 75 published works in a variety of research areas including global optimization algorithms control systems communication and telecommunication systems and instrumentation electronics. He has served as a technical consultant to such organizations as Control Data Corporation General Electric General Motors Research Laboratories Gulf & Western AT&T Bell Laboratories ARCO Research and Technical Services and the U.S. Government and has been a frequent lecturer at national and international symposia. Accuracy requirements are usually determined as a percentage of the specification range of the measured part or process. Setting accuracy requirements in this manner results in a wide and unpredictable range of false rejection and acceptance probabilities. This causes extra costs due to either: 1) over specification of measurement systems accuracy requirements;2) time, effort, retesting, and resolution of false rejections;or 3) system degradation caused by false acceptance of out-of-specification parts. Achieving a consistent and known risk of false acceptance is only possible by considering the measured process C(pk), the process's mean in relation to the center of the specification range, and the measurement system error distribution. This paper presents a method for calculating the probabilities of false rejection and false acceptance for a normal process which is measured with, alternately, uniform and normally distributed error. It is shown that under most conditions uniform error causes 20% to 30% higher false rejection and acceptance probabilities. Thus, knowledge of measurement error distribution could provide lower total production cost.

He received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1983 and is presently pursuing a master's degree in engineering management at Old Dominion University. Mr. Luke is experienced as a test engineer at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard (1978–1989) and as a reliability/quality engineer at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Detachment Norfolk (1989-Present). Currently he is the group leader of the RMA/QA group for the AN/SQQ-89(V) Antisubmarine Warfare System at Naval Undersea Warfare Center Detachment Norfolk. Mr. Luke is a member of ASNE IEEE (Reliability Society) and ASQC and is an ASQC certified quality engineer and reliability engineer. Derya Alasya Jacobs:is an assistant professor in the Engineering Management Department at Old Dominion University (ODU). She has a B.S. in computer science and an M.S. and Ph.D in engineering management from the University of Missouri-Rolla. Prior to joining ODU Dr. Jacobs worked as a research engineer at the Center for Technology Transfer and Economic Development at the University of Missouri-Rolla. During the same period she served as a consultant in software development for Missouri Enterprise Rolla Missouri. Dr. Jacobs' research interests are in the areas of applied artificial intelligence decision support systems operations research and computer integrated manufacturing. Billie M. As technology advances and our dependency on software increases, the requirement to develop the correct means to improve quality in both the deveiopment phase and the maintenance phase of software life cycle support becomes increasingly significant. The focus of this paper is on the dilemma facing software engineering in maintaining quality within the constraints of the maintenance phase. The paper further proposes that the software maintenance process can also be analvzed and improved using statistical process control (SPC) techniques. The methods discussed in this paper have been proposed for use in the software Maintenance project at NUWC Detachment Norfolk. Upon successful testing at NUWC Detachment Norfolk, they will be forwarded to the AN/SQQ-89(V) (interagencv) software quality Evaluation Committee for use by other agencies which are developing and maintaining AN/SQQ-89(V) software.
