The sites are typically secured through a system whereby a user chooses both a unique user name and a password that will be used to authenticate them. The purpose of this pilot study was to explore the feasibility of using hand drawn images to identify symbol components for incorporation into warning symbol design software. This software will use an interactive evolutionary computation (IEC) algorithm to generate and evolve symbols mathematically described by a set of numerical parameters. Therefore, participants (N = 100) ages 19-43 (x = 23.2) were recruited to determine these symbol design parameters. Participants were invited to hand draw warning symbols for three referents: fall from elevation, hearing protection, and hazardous atmosphere. A panel of design engineers determined 27 attributes were present in the fall from elevation, 19 in the hearing protection, and 25 in the hazardous atmosphere images. A direct clustering algorithm was used to determine which attributes, or symbol parameters, were most commonly present or conspicuously absent among the clustered image families. For the fall from elevation, hearing protection and hazardous atmosphere referents, the clustering algorithm identified six, four and four symbol parameters, respectively, primarily responsible for distinguishing one drawn symbol from another. Thus, these parameters will be included as evolvable genes in the IEC software.

We conducted an eye-tracking study of mechanical problem solving from cross-sectional diagrams of devices. Response time, accuracy and eye movement data were collected and analyzed for 72 problem-solving episodes (9 subjects solving 8 problems each). Results indicate that longer response times and visually attending to more components of a device do not necessarily lead to increased accuracy. However, more focus shifts, visually attending to components in the order of causal propagation, and longer durations of visual attention allocated to critical components of the devices appear to be characteristics that separate successful problem solvers from unsuccessful ones. These findings throw light on effective diagrammatic reasoning strategies, provide empirical support to a cognitive model of comprehension, and suggest ideas for the design of information displays that support causal reasoning. © 2004, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, All rights Reserved.

Cloud resource providers in a market face dynamic and unpredictable consumer behavior. The way, how prices are set in a dynamic environment, can influence the demand behavior of price sensitive customers. A Cloud resource provider has to decide on how to allocate his scarce resources in order to maximize his profit. The application of bid price control for evaluating incoming service requests is a common approach for capacity control in network revenue management. In this paper we introduce a customized version of the concept of self-adjusting bid prices and apply it to the area of Cloud Computing. Furthermore, we perform a simulation in order to test the efficiency of the proposed model. © 2009 IEEE.

This paper proposes a checking method based on mutual instances and discusses three key problems in the method： how to deal with mistakes in the mutual instances and how to deal with too many or too few mutual instances. It provides the checking based on the weighted mutual instances considering fault tolerance, gives a way to partition the large-scale mutual instances, and proposes a process greatly reducing the manual annotation work to get more mutual instances. Intension annotation that improves the checking method is also discussed. The method is practical and effective to check subsumption relations between concept queries in different ontologies based on mutual instances.

Green Dolphin (GD) is a question and answer system for students learning programming, with a social web interface. It crowd-sources the task of answering technical questions to the peers of students who ask questions. GD has several original features that make it different from existing systems. It automatically identifies students who are knowledgeable based on their activity, and tags them as experts to whom other students can ask questions. GD provides students with automatic feedback of the quality of code they submit. Thus, students get fast and high quality answers from their peers and the system, freeing up time for teachers. After a student posts a question in GD, it delays making visible answers from instructors and teaching assistants so that other students are encouraged to participate, and have time to answer the question. We believe that this can significantly increase student participation, collaboration and sense of ownership. Students gain new knowledge from the flow of questions and answers in the system. They develop communication skills by asking and answering questions as well as programming and debugging skills. Copyright © 2012 by the Association for Computing Machinery, Inc. (ACM).

The advent of service-oriented Grid computing has resulted in the need for Grid resources such as clusters to enforce user-specific service needs and expectations. Service Level Agreements (SLAs) define conditions which a cluster needs to fulfill for various jobs. An example of SLA requirement is the deadline by which a job has to be completed. In addition, these clusters implement job admission control so that overall service performance does not deteriorate due to accepting exceeding amount of jobs. However, their effectiveness is highly dependent on accurate runtime estimates of jobs. This paper thus examines the adverse impact of inaccurate runtime estimates for deadline constrained job admission control in clusters using the Earliest Deadline First (EDF) strategy and a deadline-based proportional processor share strategy called Libra. Simulation results show that an enhancement called LibraRisk can manage the risk of inaccurate runtime estimates better than EDF and Libra by considering the risk of deadline delay. © 2006 IEEE.

The one strong point of XML is that it allows document owners to create their own structure and tag names. It might be that some XML documents contain the same information but use a different structure and/or tag names that have the same meaning but in different words. It will be difficult not only to search all relevant information in one query but also to use exchanged information right away. If the sender and receiver use different formats of XML, then either the sender or receiver has to reformat his XML. The best way to make searching and/or exchanging information easier is to ensure that all XML documents are in the same format. XML Tag Recommendation (XTR) is introduced to support this idea. XTR is based on case-based reasoning framework. It collects the most used tag name as a solution for future use. When you insert a new problem to XTR, it finds the most similar case and recommends the solution from that case to the XML document owner. The XML document owner can change his document format into the recommended solution format. Thus, the XML documents are in the same format. This makes searching and/or exchanging information more powerful. © 2011 IEEE.

Integrated Development Environments (IDE) generate multiple graphical and textual representations of programs. Co-ordination of these representations during program comprehension and debugging can be a complex task. In order to better understand the role and effectiveness of multiple representations, we conducted an empirical study of Java program debugging with a professional, multi-representation IDE. We found that program code and dynamic representations (dynamic viewer, variable watch and output) attracted the most attention of programmers. Static representations like Unified Modeling Language (UML) Diagrams and Control Structure Diagrams (CSD) saw significantly lesser usage. We analyzed gaze patterns by segmenting the debugging sessions into three, five and fifteen minute intervals, and classifying gazes into short and long gazes. Novel data mining techniques were used to detect high frequency patterns from eye tracking data. Visual pattern differences were found among participants based on their programming experience, familiarity with the IDE and debugging performance. © 2012 ACM.
