Despite the widespread adoption of smart devices and home automation systems, users still face usability challenges. Additionally, evaluating the usability of smart home systems is not straightforward. Our paper focuses on building a Smart Home Prototype, selecting, and evaluating software User Interfaces (UI). We have chosen the smart home heating system as the basis, but the principles are applicable to other applications. To discuss smart home UIs, it is necessary to understand the components, implementation scenarios, configuration, and operation of smart home systems. Therefore, we devote considerable attention to these topics in the paper. Our smart home system utilizes a Raspberry Pi computer, temperature sensors, servo drives, an Android-based smartphone, and other necessary hardware. We installed and configured open-source software and third-party services on the experimental setup. We provided a brief description of each selected software. We used the Home Assistant operating system, its mobile application, voice assistant Alice, and Telegram chatbot. In our study, we described a methodology for evaluating user interfaces in smart homes and conducted an experiment to assess their usability. The experiment results indicated which interface was more user-friendly and identified the drawbacks of each. In conclusion, we discuss UI features that can improve usability and available options for building a smart home based on capabilities. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Cyber-Physical Production systems (CPPSs), such as automated car manufacturing plants, execute a configurable sequence of production steps to manufacture products from a product portfolio. In CPPS engineering, domain experts start with manually determining feasible production step sequences and resources based on implicit knowledge. This process is hard to reproduce and highly inefficient. In this paper, we present the Extended Iterative Process Sequence Exploration (eIPSE) approach to derive variability models for products, processes, and resources from a domain-specific description. To automate the integrated exploration and configuration process for a CPPS, we provide a toolchain which automatically reduces the configuration space and allows to generate CPPS artifacts, such as control code for resources. We evaluate the approach with four real-world use cases, including the generation of control code artifacts, and an observational user study to collect feedback from engineers with different backgrounds. The results confirm the usefulness of the eIPSE approach and accompanying prototype to straightforwardly configure a desired CPPS. © 2024, CC BY.

Diabetes Mellitus has no permanent cure to date and is one of the leading causes of death globally. The alarming increase in diabetes calls for the need to take precautionary measures to avoid/predict the occurrence of diabetes. This paper proposes HealthEdge, a machine learning-based smart healthcare framework for type 2 diabetes prediction in an integrated IoT-edge-cloud computing system. Numerical experiments and comparative analysis were carried out between the two most used machine learning algorithms in the literature, Random Forest (RF) and Logistic Regression (LR), using two real-life diabetes datasets. With the increasing popularity of smart terminals, the Internet of Things (IoT) vastly expands the influence of information technology and creates great values to our society. The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is a typical application of the IoT specifically for medical and healthcare related purposes. In IoMT, personal health records (PHRs) generated by intelligent equipment are usually stored in a cloud sever managed by a semi-trusted cloud provider. However, there is still a possibility of the exposure of private information to unauthorized parties. In order to protect a patient’s private information, and ensure that doctors can search a patient’s PHRs without decrypting all ciphertexts, an efficient searchable encryption framework with weighted keywords is proposed in this paper. In this framework, we implement a weighted keyword model to raise the accuracy of search results, and reduce the computational and storage overhead. Besides, compared with the existing schemes, the framework is supportable of multi-search mechanism, which is adaptable to more application scenarios. Finally, the efficiency and security of this framework is proved through security and performance analysis in this paper. © 2022, CC BY.

Point Cloud Registration (PCR) is a critical and challenging task in computer vision and robotics. One of the primary difficulties in PCR is identifying salient and meaningful points that exhibit consistent semantic and geometric properties across different scans. Previous methods have encountered challenges with ambiguous matching due to the similarity among patch blocks throughout the entire point cloud and the lack of consideration for efficient global geometric consistency. To address these issues, we propose a new framework that includes several novel techniques. Firstly, we introduce a semantic-aware geometric encoder that combines object-level and patch-level semantic information. This encoder significantly improves registration recall by reducing ambiguity in patch-level superpoint matching. Additionally, we incorporate a prior knowledge approach that utilizes an intrinsic shape signature to identify salient points. This enables us to extract the most salient super points and meaningful dense points in the scene. Secondly, we introduce an innovative transformer that encodes High-Order (HO) geometric features. These features are crucial for identifying salient points within initial overlap regions while considering global high-order geometric consistency. We introduce an anchor node selection strategy to optimize this high-order transformer further. By encoding inter-frame triangle or polyhedron consistency features based on these anchor nodes, we can effectively learn high-order geometric features of salient super points. These high-order features are then propagated to dense points and utilized by a Sinkhorn matching module to identify critical correspondences for successful registration. The experiments conducted on the 3DMatch/3DLoMatch and KITTI datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

Accurate and efficient 3D object detection in LiDAR point cloud is critical for autonomous driving. In this paper, we provide a solution for LiDAR-only detection which employs voxel features and a sparse convolution network. Specifically, we utilized voxel centers to encode point clouds' voxel features. Then, combining the sparse convolution method, we leveraged residual learning to design the backbone network. The detector output predicted results for multi-category and multi-object detection. Our method was evaluated on three popular and challenging datasets (KITTI, nuScence and Waymo). Experimental results demonstrated that the accuracy and speed (27.8 FPS) of our model could effectively support object detection for autonomous driving in various scenarios.

With rising uncertainty in the real world, online Reinforcement Learning (RL) has been receiving increasing attention due to its fast learning capability and improving data efficiency. However, online RL often suffers from complex Value Function Approximation (VFA) and catastrophic interference, creating difficulty for the deep neural network to be applied to an online RL algorithm in a fully online setting. Therefore, a simpler and more adaptive approach is introduced to evaluate value function with the kernel-based model. Sparse representations are superior at handling interference, indicating that competitive sparse representations should be learnable, non-prior, non-truncated and explicit when compared with current sparse representation methods. Moreover, in learning sparse representations, attention mechanisms are utilized to represent the degree of sparsification, and a smooth attentive function is introduced into the kernel-based VFA. In this paper, we propose an Online Attentive Kernel-Based Temporal Difference (OAKTD) algorithm using two-timescale optimization and provide convergence analysis of our proposed algorithm. Experimental evaluations showed that OAKTD outperformed several Online Kernel-based Temporal Difference (OKTD) learning algorithms in addition to the Temporal Difference (TD) learning algorithm with Tile Coding on public Mountain Car, Acrobot, CartPole and Puddle World tasks. Blockchain technology has piqued the interest of businesses of all types, while consistently improving and adapting to developers and business owners requirements. Therefore, several blockchain platforms have emerged, making it challenging to select a suitable one for a specific type of business. This paper presents a classification of over one hundred blockchain platforms. We develop smart contracts for detecting healthcare insurance frauds using two blockchain platforms selected based on our proposed decision-making map approach for the selection of the top two suitable platforms for healthcare insurance frauds detection application, followed by an evaluation of their performances. Our classification shows that the largest percentage of blockchain platforms could be used for all types of application domains, and the second biggest percentage is to develop financial services only, even though generic platforms can be used, while a small number is for developing in other specific application domains. Our decision-making map revealed that Hyperledger Fabric is the best blockchain platform for detecting healthcare insurance frauds. Cyber-Physical Production systems (CPPSs) are highly configurable and versatile production systems that utilize diverse hardware components through control software. Managing control software variants in CPPS development is challenging as variation points in the software stem from multiple engineering disciplines. Furthermore, there is a lack of mechanisms to explicitly describe control software variants as part of the software. In this paper, we present an extension of the Variability for 4diac (V4rdiac) approach and investigate its usefulness in managing control software variants based on multidisciplinary variability in CPPS development and delta modeling. We extend the approach by considering its application engineering activities to produce client-specific control software variants. We also present a novel mechanism to visualize deltas in control software to reduce the effort of implementing and maintaining deltas. We apply V4rdiac in two case studies and conduct an additional user study with four participants from industry to evaluate its usefulness. The evaluation results confirm that the engineers were able to successfully manage the control software variants. The results also show that V4rdiac can be easily learned and increases industrial practitioners’ productivity in managing control software. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.
