AMCheX: Accurate Analysis of Missing-Check Bugs for Linux Kernel

The Linux kernel adopts a large number of security checks to prevent security-sensitive operations from being executed under unsafe *** a security-sensitive operation is unchecked,a missing-check issue *** check is a class of severe bugs in software programs especially in operating system kernels,which may cause a variety of security issues,such as out-of-bound accesses,permission bypasses,and privilege *** to the lack of security specifications,how to automatically identify security-sensitive operations and their required security checks in the Linux kernel becomes a challenge for missing-check *** this paper,we present an accurate missing-check analysis method for Linux kernel,which can automatically infer possible security-sensitive ***,we first automatically identify all possible security check functions of *** according to their callsites,a two-direction analysis method is leveraged to identify possible security-sensitive operations.A missing-check bug is reported when the security-sensitive operation is not protected by its corresponding security *** have implemented our method as a tool,named AMCheX,on top of the LLVM(Low Level Virtual Machine)framework and evaluated it on the Linux *** reported 12 new missing-check bugs which can cause security *** of them have been confirmed by Linux maintainers.

computer vision (CV) is a subfield of computer science that enables machines to perceive, interpret, and understand visual data. It combines image processing, analysis, and machine learning to extract meaningful insights from images and videos. One key application of CV is the classification of gender from handwritten text images-a complex task, especially in languages such as Pashto due to the intricacy of the script and the limited resources. This research presents a novel approach to gender classification using Pashto Handwritten Text Images (PHTI). The study evaluates and compares the performance of traditional machine learning and modern deep learning models: Support Vector Machine (SVM) and You Only Look Once version 8 (YOLO8), a CNN-based object detection framework. The PHTI dataset, introduced in this study, consists of 36, 086 text line images written by 200 male and 200 female native Pashto writers. The goal is to assess how effectively SVM and YOLO8 can classify gender based on visual handwriting patterns in the Pashto language. The experimental results reveal that YOLO8 outperforms SVM in classification accuracy. Although SVM, a widely used machine learning model, achieved an accuracy of 61.29%, YOLO8 reached a significantly higher accuracy of 77% in the same data set. This performance gap highlights the advantages of using advanced deep learning models for complex pattern recognition tasks in CV. This research provides a pioneering contribution by focusing on Pashto, a low-resource language, in the context of gender classification using handwritten text images. It opens new pathways for applying CV in regional languages and supports the development of intelligent systems capable of handling various scripts. © 2013 IEEE.

Federated learning (FL) emerges as a potential solution for enabling multiple terminal devices to collaboratively accomplish computational tasks within an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) swarm. However, traditional FL approaches, predicated on synchronous data aggregation, are not feasible for a UAV swarm owing to the inherently variable and dynamic nature of their communication networks compared with terrestrial systems. Furthermore, the data procured by UAVs is often highly heterogeneous, attributable to disparities in deployment environments and device attributes. Considering the distinct flight paths and unique operational conditions encountered by different UAVs, a considerable amount of data remains unlabeled. To tackle the challenges associated with asynchronous operations and the prevalence of unlabeled data, we introduce a novel framework termed Semi-synchronous FL with Cross-Sharpness and Layer-Freezing (SFedXL), tailored for a UAV swarm. In particular, we devise a cross-sharpness model training strategy aimed at optimizing the utilization of both labeled and unlabeled datasets. Additionally, we propose an innovative semi-synchronous model aggregation protocol, complemented by client-specific layer-freezing and client cluster scheduling, designed to expedite the training process. Our simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm surpasses current FL methods in terms of object recognition accuracy and communication efficiency, albeit with a trade-off of increased local computation latency. © 2014 IEEE.

The industrial supply chain networks basically capture the circulation of social resource, dominating the stability and efficiency of the industrial system. In this paper, we provide an empirical study of the topology of smartphone supply chain network. The supply chain network is constructed using open online data. Our experimental results show that the smartphone supply chain network has small-world feature with scale-free degree distribution, in which a few high degree nodes play a key role in the function and can effectively reduce the communication cost. We also detect the community structure to find the basic functional unit. It shows that information communication between nodes is crucial to improve the resource utilization. We should pay attention to the global resource configuration for such electronic production management.

An Intrusion Detection System (IDS) protects computer networks against attacks and intrusions. One class of IDS is called signature-based network IDSs as they monitor network traffic, looking for evidence of malicious behaviour as specified in attack descriptions (referred to as signatures). Many studies report that IDSs have problems accurately identifying attacks. Therefore, it is important to precisely understand under which conditions IDSs accurately identify attacks or fail to do so. However, no systematic approach has so far been defined and used to study this problem. Recognizing that signatures in essence provide the specification of an IDS engine, studying the accuracy of an IDS engine becomes a black-box testing problem. We therefore precisely and systematically evaluate which mature testing techniques can be used (and adapted) to derive tests from IDS signatures. We experiment with those criteria on one widely used and maintained IDS and show that our approach is effective at systematically revealing problems in this IDS engine (e.g., problems that prevent the detection of attacks). © 2010 IEEE.

A FRAMEWORK FOR SOURCE CODE SEARCH USING PROGRAM PATTERNS

For maintainers involved in understanding and reengineering large software. locating source code fragments that match certain patterns is a critical task. Existing solutions to the problem are few, and they either involve manual, painstaking scans of the source code using tools based on regular expressions, or the use of large, integrated software engineering environments that include simple pattern-based query processors in their tool-kits. We present a framework in which pattern languages are used to specify interesting code features. The pattern languages are derived by extending the source programming language with pattern-matching symbols. We describe SCRUPLE, a finite state machine-based source code search tool, that efficiently implements this framework. We also present experimental performance results obtained from a SCRUPLE prototype, and the user interface of a source code browser built on top of SCRUPLE.

An Intelligent Privacy Protection Scheme for Efficient Edge Computation Offloading in IoV

As a pivotal enabler of intelligent transportation system(ITS), Internet of vehicles(Io V) has aroused extensive attention from academia and industry. The exponential growth of computation-intensive, latency-sensitive,and privacy-aware vehicular applications in Io V result in the transformation from cloud computing to edge computing,which enables tasks to be offloaded to edge nodes(ENs) closer to vehicles for efficient execution. In ITS environment,however, due to dynamic and stochastic computation offloading requests, it is challenging to efficiently orchestrate offloading decisions for application requirements. How to accomplish complex computation offloading of vehicles while ensuring data privacy remains challenging. In this paper, we propose an intelligent computation offloading with privacy protection scheme, named COPP. In particular, an Advanced Encryption Standard-based encryption method is utilized to implement privacy protection. Furthermore, an online offloading scheme is proposed to find optimal offloading policies. Finally, experimental results demonstrate that COPP significantly outperforms benchmark schemes in the performance of both delay and energy consumption.

Prediction of dissolved oxygen in the Mediterranean Sea along Gaza, Palestine - an artificial neural network approach

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are flexible tools which are being used increasingly to predict and forecast water resources variables. The human activities in areas surrounding enclosed and semi-enclosed seas such as the Mediterranean Sea always produce in the long term a strong environmental impact in the form of coastal and marine degradation. The presence of dissolved oxygen is essential for the survival of most organisms in the water bodies. This paper is concerned with the use of ANNs - Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) and Radial Basis Function neural networks for predicting the next fortnight's dissolved oxygen concentrations in the Mediterranean Sea water along Gaza. MLP and Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural networks are trained and developed with reference to five important oceanographic variables including water temperature, wind velocity, turbidity, pH and conductivity. These variables are considered as inputs of the network. The data sets used in this study consist of four years and collected from nine locations along Gaza coast. The network performance has been tested with different data sets and the results show satisfactory performance. Prediction results prove that neural network approach has good adaptability and extensive applicability for modelling the dissolved oxygen in the Mediterranean Sea along Gaza. We hope that the established model will help in assisting the local authorities in developing plans and policies to reduce the pollution along Gaza coastal waters to acceptable levels.

Communication and coordination between OSS developers who do not work physically in the same location have always been the challenging *** pull-based development model,as the state-of-art collaborative development mechanism,provides high openness and transparency to improve the visibility of contributors'***,duplicate contributions may still be submitted by more than one contributors to solve the same problem due to the parallel and uncoordinated nature of this *** not detected in time,duplicate pull-requests can cause contributors and reviewers to waste time and energy on redundant *** this paper,we propose an approach combining textual and change similarities to automatically detect duplicate contributions in pull-based model at submission *** a new-arriving contribution,we first compute textual similarity and change similarity between it and other existing *** then our method returns a list of candidate duplicate contributions that are most similar with the new contribution in terms of the combined textual and change *** evaluation shows that 83.4%of the duplicates can be found in average when we use the combined textual and change similarity compared to 54.8%using only textual similarity and 78.2%using only change similarity.

Deep Semantic and Attentive Network for Unsupervised Video Summarization

With the rapid growth of video data, video summarization is a promising approach to shorten a lengthy video into a compact version. Although supervised summarization approaches have achieved state-of-the-art performance, they require frame-level annotated labels. Such an annotation process is time-consuming and tedious. In this article, we propose a novel deep summarization framework named Deep Semantic and Attentive Network for Video Summarization (DSAVS) that can select the most semantically representative summary by minimizing the distance between video representation and text representation without any frame-level labels. Another challenge associated with video summarization tasks mainly originates from the difficulty of considering temporal information over a long time. Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) performs well for temporal dependencies modeling but does not work well with long video clips. Therefore, we introduce a self-attention mechanism into our summarization framework to capture the long-range temporal dependencies among the frames. Extensive experiments on two popular benchmark datasets, i.e., SumMe and TVSum, show that our proposed framework outperforms other state-of-the-art unsupervised approaches and even most supervised methods. © 2022 Association for Computing Machinery.
