We introduce the notion of an actor eco-system a framework that addresses the design-time requirements of building multi-actor (multi-agent) systems such as supply chains, business networks, virtual organizations etc. We describe how semantic annotation of abstract models of actor ecosystems can be used to derive executable process models that realize such systems. We outline a potentially powerful toolkit for model to code transformations in complex agent-oriented settings. © 2007 IEEE.

Reprogramming is an essential service for wireless sensor networks. Authenticating reprogramming process is important as sensors need to verify that the code image is truly from a trusted source. There are two ways to achieve authentication: public key based and symmetric key based. Although previous work has shown that public key authentication is feasible on sensor nodes if used sparingly, it is still quite expensive compared to symmetric key based approach. In this paper, we propose a symmetric key based protocol for authenticating reprogramming process. Our protocol is based on the secret instantiation algorithm from [5, 11], which requires only O(log n) keys to be maintained at each sensor. We integrate this algorithm with the existing reprogramming protocol. Through simulation, we show that it is able to authenticate reprogramming process at very low communication cost, and has very short delay. ©2007 IEEE.

As the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and model-driven development (MDD) become increasingly common in industry, many developers are faced with the difficult task of understanding how an existing UML model realizes system requirements. Essentially, developers are required to understand the structure and behavior of UML models that they may have not created. Understanding these relationships is non-trivial, because the interactions in the model are not readily apparent. Commonly, the only means to elicit these relationships is visual inspection and guided simulation. This paper describes an alternative approach termed REVU (Requirements Visualization of UML), a process for visualizing functional requirements in terms of behavioral interactions in a UML model. We illustrate the use of this process with the visualization of scenarios for an adaptive light control system. © 2006 IEEE.

Enterprise Resource Planning systems efficiently administer all tasks concerning real-time planning and manufacturing. material procurement and inventory monitoring, customer and supplier management. Nevertheless, the incorporation of domain knowledge and the application of adaptive decision making into such systems require extreme customization with a cost that becomes unaffordable, especially in the ease of SMEs. In this paper we present an alternative approach for incorporating adaptive business intelligence into the company:s backbone. We have designed and developed a highly reconfigurable. adaptive, cost efficient multi-agent framework that acts as an add-on to ERP software, employing Data Mining and Soft Computing techniques in order to provide intelligent recommendations on customer, supplier and inventory management. In this paper, we present the architecture and development details of the developed framework, and demonstrate its application on a real test ease. © 2007 SWPS.

The explosive and unprecedented growth with new innovation in wireless technology has opened up a new window for life-saving telemedicine services. After every couple of weeks a competitive solution is provided with the help of state-of-the-art technology to serve human beings every where on their move. By adopting advantages of telemedication the life in remote areas is facilitated. In this paper the working design of a quality ensuing wireless telemedicine system is proposed. The system activates real-time interactive medical data in a wireless environment. It handles vital sign telemonitoring technique that acquires, stores, and forward readings of electrocardiographs (ECG) and temperature over the wireless LAN. The browser based application is customized for 802.11b. The paper describes the quality ensuing design and implementation of portable medical unit that allows monitoring any where and that can be uses for various monitoring scenarios of homecare-units, hospital, the emergency and disaster relief centers. Existing telemedicine systems use traditional hard-wired, bandwidth-reserved mechanisms or road-mobile medical services for a real-time monitoring of patient. The preliminary results of telemedication determine that this level of service is not beneficial in monitoring patient with the help of stationary system or mobile-medication. Moreover, switching via GSM may guarantee a territory in range but low bandwidth, small data rates and system expense become an obstacle. The wireless broadband services guarantees full coverage and system expenses are for session based only. This research paper demonstrates for a practicable telemedication system with potential security features available with IEEE 802.11b standard.

Class responsibility assignment is not an easy skill to acquire. Though there are many methodologies for assigning responsibilities to classes, they all rely on human judgment and decision making. Our objective is to provide decision-making help to re-assign methods and attributes to classes in a class diagram. Our solution is based on a multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) and uses class coupling and cohesion measurement. Our MOGA takes as input a class diagram to be optimized and suggests possible improvements to it. The choice of a MOGA stems from the fact that there are typically many evaluation criteria that cannot be easily combined into one objective, and several alternative solutions are acceptable for a given OO domain model. This article presents our approach in detail, our decisions regarding the multi-objective genetic algorithm, and reports on a case study. Our results suggest that the MOGA can help correct suboptimal class responsibility assignment decisions.

Utility computing has been anticipated to be the next generation of computing usage. Users have the freedom to easily switch to any commercial computing service to complete jobs whenever the need arises and simply pay only on usage, without any investment costs. A commercial computing service however has certain objectives or goals that it aims to achieve. In this paper, we identify three essential objectives for a commercial computing service: (i) meet SLA, (ii) maintain reliability, and (iii) earn profit. This leads to the problem of whether a resource management policy implemented in the commercial computing service is able to meet the required objectives or not. So, we also develop two evaluation methods that are simple and intuitive: (i) separate and (ii) integrated risk analysis to analyze the effectiveness of resource management policies in achieving the required objectives. Evaluation results based on five policies successfully demonstrate the applicability of separate and integrated risk analysis to assess policies in terms of the required objectives. © 2007 IEEE.

Service-Oriented Architectures provide integration of interoperability for independent and loosely coupled services. Web services and the associated new standards such as WSRF are frequently used to realise such Service-Oriented Architectures. In such systems, autonomic principles of self-configuration, self-optimisation, self-healing and self-adapting are desirable to ease management and improve robustness. In this paper we focus on the extension of the self management and autonomic behaviour of a WSRF container connected by a structured P2P overlay network to monitor and rectify its QoS to satisfy its SLAs. The SLA plays an important role during two distinct phases in the life-cycle of a WSRF container Firstly during service deployment when services are assigned to containers in such a way as to minimise the threat of SLA violations, and secondly during maintenance when violations are detected and services are migrated to other containers to preserve QoS. In addition, as the architecture has been designed and built using standardised modem technologies and with high levels of transparency, conventional web services can be deployed with the addition of a SLA specification.

Asynchronous data communication mechanisms (ACMs) have been extensively studied as data connectors between independently timed concurrent processes. In previous work, an automatic ACM synthesis method based on the generation of the reachability graph and the theory of regions was proposed. In this paper, we propose a new synthesis method based on the composition of Petri net modules, avoiding the exploration of the reachability graph. The behavior of ACMs is formally defined and correctness properties are specified in CTL. Model checking is used to verify the correctness of the Petri net models. The algorithms to generate the Petri net models are presented. Finally, a method to automatically generate C++ source code from the Petri net model is described.

Process inter-operation is characterized as cooperative interactions among loosely coupled autonomous constituents to adaptively fulfill system-wide purpose. Issues of inconsistency can be anticipated in inter-operating processes given their independent management and design. To reduce inconsistency (that may contribute to failures) effective methods for statically verifying behavioral interoperability are required. This paper contributes a method for practical, semantic verification of interoperating processes (as represented with BPMN models). We provide methods to evaluate consistency during process design where annotation of the immediate effect of tasks and sub-processes has been provided. Furthermore, some guidelines are defined against common models of inter-operation for scoping traceability to possible causes of inconsistency. This supports subsequent resolution efforts.
